I agree that we need to be patient because this is a very young team.  Bronx Boy's point is that a lot of people aren't willing to wait, given the recent track record of our program and in particular our current coach.  I personally am willing to wait and try to enjoy our young team, but it seems like most people disagree, and they are entitled to.

Agreed I like many jump to some quick conclusions but it is difficult to watch any team, be they freshmen and sophmores or not, lose to Maine and Fairfield.  A win against Sacred Heart is nice but it really does not tell us much about our team or coach.  The fact that we are giddy over this win says a lot about our expectations, or lack thereof.

I think the giddiness can also be attributed to our most recent results.  If we had started 1-1 or 2-0 for that matter, the giddiness would possibly have been absent.

Nothing replaces success in the revenue sports.  Nothing.  That's not to take away from the success in the Olympic sports - they do matter.  It isn't a replacement for success in the flagship sports.

I'm usually "giddy" when Fordham wins.  I am a Fordham fan.  I have no unreasonable expectations about this season, but I'm going to be excited after each and every win.

I feel it's almost bittersweet.  While I always want to see Fordham do well and get the W - part of me thinks that the more tallies in the Loss column will mean the DW era at Rose Hill will be closer to an end.

That brings up an interesting question that I was thinking about recently and hesitated to ask, but I'll take the bait:

Pick one:

Fordham wins 5 games this season.  DW is fired.  Jio and Gaston both transfer.

or

Fordham wins 14 games this season, including 8 in the A10, and loses in the quarters of the A10 tourney. DW is not fired, and all of our players return.

I realize that these are both a bit outlandish.  I'd obviously pick the latter.  I fear that some will choose the former.

It's an interesting question, but I think the second choice needs to be tweaked a bit to go after what I think you're trying to get at (and which I've debated too). 14 wins total, 8 wins in conference with a team as young as ours, would be very promising for the future and is a level that a talented yet inexperienced team (and its fans) should consider a success. If we get to 14 wins, that means the players are hitting the best case scenarios and DW is doing something right. I'd peg the odds of that happening though at around 1-2%. I'd love for it to happen, but it's not likely.

The problem is that we could very easily win just 7-10 games, with most of those coming against the Sacred Heart's on our schedule, get outclassed in the A10, yet Grank and Fr. McShane might still it as improvement over last year and choose to keep DW. The "we're young, we need time" shouldn't be a excuse to finish at the bottom of the conference; even a super young team like ours, if they're truly talented and moderately well coached, should be able to finish in the middle of the pack of the conference.

Your 14 win/8 win scenario would be legitimate cause for excitement and momentum, and I'd pick that choice over 5 wins and a rebuilding. But if it were between 5 win rebuilding and 7-10 wins but with DW still at the helm, sorry, I'll gladly choose a few embarrassing losses to low major teams if it means our program can get back on the right track.

enjoy each win

a scenario that has not been brought up is the worst one:   we win 2 - 5 games, none in conference, don't get to AC

DW is not fired and key players leave

so, enjoy what we can when we can

Also, we haven't seen how good Lance can be. Once he gets back on the court, he can play the role of an explosive scorer off the bench, as I had mentioned before the season began. I can see him challenging Estwick for the starting job in a few weeks. We can't forget that Lance, talent wise, is right up there with Gaston when healthy. It'll be interesting to see how we bring him along into the rotation and how soon. With Freeman coming next year (and hopefully Joel Wright), we have every reason to be optimistic. And honestly, I don't see Jio transferring after his sophomore year. He would have taken an action this year if he wanted to and I doubt Fordham will be any more likely to release him from his scholarship next summer. And Chris and Lance knew what they were getting themselves into before they committed, and they're all willing to give this a shot. If Chris had gone to any other program, I doubt he'd be getting 35-37 minutes of playing time.

Just to clarify, the question that I asked was in no way meant to imply that I thought those scenarios were realistic.  It was a hypothetical.

I hope your right.  The few minutes he played the other night he looked out of his league.  He also really needs to hit the weights and pasta line.

In the "trenches" soldiers don't quit on each other, but they might revolt against an oppressive and insane military leader who is leading them to certain death.

In basketball its the same.  Players would not leave to quit on each other, but might remain if we get rid of the insane dictatorial coach who is leading them to certain defeat.

Thus the call to remove DW before he does any more damage.   Its the business of coaching.   We have to do what we have to do.    "We" means Fr. McShane and the BOT.

They need to do it now.  Before the A10 season starts.

I doubt we wil win 14, but if we do, then DW would be out of my dog house for the time.  I doubt this will happen though.

I tried to make my optimistic and pessimistic scenarios equally unrealistic.  Maybe I should've lowered the wins in the optimistic scenario.

I don't see how we can see or expect much from a player that will probably only see a few minutes a game, reportedly on Doctor's recommendation, until January.  That said, we did see him score easily within a minute of his first game; Seems to have a knack for finding te seams in a zone defense; and, Has an impressive vertical leap even while recuperating.

We also saw him leap sky high for that rebound last game. It's really hard to say if he belongs in the league or not from 6 minutes of action. It's hard to develop any kind of consistency when you're out there for 2-3 minute stretches. But he does take a lot of shot attempts - he's certainly not shy about putting them up (so he definitely has a lot of confidence). I think we'll be alright with him. I have a feeling that over time, he'll become a reliable scorer for us.
