But subsequently lost 2-1 to St. Mary's so we're now 1-1 on the season.  The 2 first half goals did us in.

We started off well, with a 2-0 win. Goals by Mascelli and Miller in a relatively evenly played game.

We're picked 7th in the preseason coaches' poll after a 10-5-5, 5-1-4 record last year.  We lost to George Mason in overtime last year in the A10 quarter finals.

We have 7 freshmen, 6 sophs, 6 Juniors and 3 seniors.

6  The Fordham Forums / All Other Fordham Rams' Sports / Women's Soccer Adds Two New Assistants on: August 17, 2017, 04:14:12 pm
It seems a little late to be adding new assistant coaches but we added Shannon Neely Noel and former Ram Ally White to the staff, replacing Kim Miller and Matt Higgins.  Neely Noel's credentials sound especially strong.  Both concentrated on coaching keepers and defense, which was more of Higgins' area. http://fordhamsports.com/news/2017/8/17/womens-soccer-adds-shannon-neely-noel-ally-white-to-coaching-staff.aspx

We've already played one game, losing an exhibition to St. John's 1-0.  We're schedules to play Nevada Reno and St. Mary's (CA) (both there) in the next couple of days.
7  The Fordham Forums / All Other Fordham Rams' Sports / Re: WBB Taking European Tour on: August 17, 2017, 04:02:56 pm
We played the Univ of Trieste in Italy in the first game, and we won 86-28.  German 6'3" forward freshman Klug (#11) had 17 points and Davis had 12.  12 of our 13 players scored.  Seems like we should have scheduled tougher competition though.

"Kreslina, a senior guard...".  Burns and Missry being the lone losses.  Huh?  Padovano didn't get a mention and averaged more than Fomina.  She graduated as well.

Come on, Ray.  You can do better reporting than that.

15  The Fordham Forums / All Other Fordham Rams' Sports / WBB Adds Two to Staff on: August 04, 2017, 05:25:35 pm
The most familiar of the two, if you follow WBB at all, is Abigail Corning, a hard-working former guard under Coach Gaitley, who had done her graduate work and had a staff position at Fairfield.  She's now back in the Bronx.  She takes the position of Laura Forbes who had been with us for 6 years.  As the director of basketball operations, Corning will likely be in charge of coordinating travel, equipment, scheduling practice, overseeing the team's budget, and  be the organizer of Coach Gaitley's Basketball Camps. She also will probably serve as the team's liaison between the coaching staff and the academics, compliance, facilities and housing departments.

They have completed the seat backs but won't build the suite and replace the floor and rename it until next summer.  One year left to enjoy it as it is.

18  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: Softball Loses Three Players on: July 30, 2017, 12:35:51 am
To summarize, Softball has lost starters Vergona (C), Van Hoven (SS), and Canessa (CF) to graduation; Hughes (2b) to transfer; and Figueroa (LF) to apparent injury.  This was some our best offense too, other than Shaw.
19  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: Softball Loses Three Players on: July 28, 2017, 04:23:11 pm
Could be 4 players.  Figueroa isn't on the current roster either.  Remember, she was our starting left fielder and had a bad concussion at the end of the year.
She's still at Fordham and plans to graduate early, just unable to play yet.

Didn't know you had to sit out a year as a transfer.  Thought it was only for Basketball and football.
You're right.  I misread the Rutgers announcement and corrected my note.
22  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: Softball Loses Three Players on: July 27, 2017, 06:00:48 pm
Curious about why Hughes transferred, the Big 10 is a strong conference but Rutgers is not a good program
Am a little curious myself.  She was a Communications major, which has a good reputation at Fordham, so I doubt it was that, although we've lost 1 or 2 in the past who ultimately wanted to major in something Fordham didn't have.  Being a Jersey girl, it wasn't like she was homesick being at Fordham.  Anything else I had heard in the way of rumors, I thought kind of went away.   I would have expected another ring or two for her at Fordham.

Rutgers last year was 14-37.  We beat them 11-3 (5), 14-5 (5) and 8-4.

We certainly have the pitching to win the A10 still.  The freshmen will really have to step up to fill the other holes though.

23  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Softball Loses Three Players on: July 27, 2017, 01:50:35 pm
To-be-Jr Jess Hughes, one of our best players, transferred to Rutgers.  This is a major loss, especially offensively.  (.370 BA, 11 HRs, 23 SBs.)
http://scarletknights.com/news/2017/7/24/softball-adds-hughes-to-2018-roster.aspx

We also lost to-be-Soph Taylor Stocks, a lefty pitcher with a 1.77 ERA, but with only 59 innings.  I'm not sure yet as to where.  With Quense coming back (as a grad student) along with to-be-Soph, Aughinbaugh, and with 3 freshmen pitchers coming in, she probably saw the handwriting on the wall.  Quense pitched 208 innings, with a 2.49 ERA and Aughinbaugh pitched 140 innings, with a 2.00 ERA.

In addition we lost to-be-Soph Steph Rundlett, another pitcher who only had 3 IP and a 8.40 ERA.

I see incoming freshman Rauch, AA NYS POY as our 3rd starter.

I tend to agree with you. Some of the comments saying we can offer the international kids something more because we are located in NYC IMO is over blown. As some pointed out schools have been recruiting good international players for some time now. Seton Hall had a top player from Israel when they went to the Championship game under PJ. UConn had a kid named Scheffer back in the 90s I believe also from Israel. Other schools have also benefited as well through the years. Point is its not new. I get it though. We need to explore all possibilities from a recruiting perspective especially since we are challenged to get consistent talent both locally and national. Problem is the successful schools bring in the talent to supplement their roster. We are looking for the foreign talent as a base. Its going to be a challenge regardless.
Wasn't PJ's player from Australia?  Andrew Gaze.

Wow, I hadn't noticed or heard that.  That's a major loss.  She made the A10 All Rookie Team.  I'm trying to find out what happened.
Steph said Kreslina's Latvian team qualified for the World's and she decided she wanted to turn pro.

I am fairly sure that only the head coach and assistant coaches can be at practice. Director of Player Development cannot be at practice.
Could be, Ace, although I thought I saw her sometimes in pictures/videos.  Maybe they were not official practices.
29  The Fordham Forums / All Other Fordham Rams' Sports / Re: WBB Coaching Changes on: July 10, 2017, 10:23:37 pm
Sonia Burke, formerly of Manhattan and recently Hunter, was added as assistant.  She specializes in coaching post players, which I would have thought Sam Clarke would be doing primarily as Director of Player Development.
After thinking about it some, while Clark was our "center", she played outside more often until senior year when she played just a little more inside when warranted.  I'd say she was still learning the post position some though.  My guess is that Burke is more of the traditionalist post position coach and will do a lot of work with Klug (6'3") and Gillis ('6'4"), both freshmen.  G'mrice Davis admitted she was still learning the inside game last year so, as good as she was, Burke should help her be even better.  Klug is playing in Europe right now for Germany and is athletic, but needs to be stronger inside.  I haven't seen Gillis play, but stature-wise, she looks like she'd be a good post player if her bad knees hold up.  She was Steph's "favorite AAU post player" in recruiting.  Steph's offense is usually pretty flexible, but there were times we could have used a good traditional inside offensive player, but maybe even moreso defensively.  I think Coach Burke filled a void we had.

TX - be interested in knowing who was responsible for recruiting and who will take over that role. The ladies are doing their European tour in August.
Coach Szumilo covers Europe and is over there now.  She's officially in charge of all recruiting, but Steph does most of the East Coast herself where she has a lot of networking.  Plus she makes a trip to New Zealand/Fiji/Australia.  Nainima has the Fiji connections and we still have New Zealand connections through Erin Rooney even though she plays in Europe now, while battling through injuries.  That pretty much covers our roster since Steph has been coach.  How Szumilo does all of that traveling with 2 young kids, I'll never know.
