1  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: Softball Assistant Coach Leaving on: Today at 12:08:24 am
Also leaving is Quense, our ace pitcher.  She graduated but had another year of eligibility and was suppose to be going to Gabelli grad school at Lincoln Ctr but rumor has it that she'll play elsewhere, maybe Pitt.

With 6 pitchers on the roster without her, I don't think Bridget was expecting her back any way.

If Pitt, it's a good program with new facilities, but personally, I think if she wants to succeed in business, NYC is the place to be.
2  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: Softball Assistant Coach Leaving on: Yesterday at 10:41:23 pm
That sounds like a great idea, both could work from their strengths.  It would also be great if Jen could find a pitcher or two at her talent level Wink
Agree as to work from their strengths.

I think incoming freshman Rauch has the potential to be at Jen's talent level with good coaching.  She throws harder and has a changeup, which Jen didn't have, but Jen had movement and pinpoint accuracy.  Unfortunately, now that she's recently  married, I think it'll be more difficult to get her to move.
3  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: Softball Assistant Coach Leaving on: Yesterday at 05:26:33 pm
Thanks tx.

Any idea how many spots we are recruiting?  All scholarship?
Scott, most immediately would be 2, for next year's seniors, Shaw (IF and power hitter) and Figueroa (OF and slapper).  Yes, scholarship or partial.  Softball gets to split scholarships up.  I think unless one goes through coaches, the player has to initiate the contact with the coach prior to the end of their Junior year.  After that, the coach can initiate contact.  One often sees the best Texas players verbally committing as Sophomores.  Makes it tough for Bridget unless she sees them in one of the 3 tournaments she goes to in the summer.  I guess it's an unwritten rule that if a player gives a verbal, nobody else tries to recruit them.

Odd coincidence in coaching announcements.  Former Ram Kayla Lombardo just announced she's going to be an assistant at Lehigh, then, within days, Reese Mariconda announces she's going to GT.  Wonder if Lombardo was considered for Mariconda's job.  Both were infielders.  Would love to steal Jen Mineau from St. Joe's as pitching coach and move Gabby Leuty over to the other assistant.
4  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Softball Assistant Coach Leaving on: Yesterday at 11:07:06 am
Assistant Coach Reese Mariconda, who had been with us for 4 years, a former Virginia Tech star infielder, is leaving to be Assistant Coach at Georgia Tech.  GT used to be a top 50 team but had fallen off to 155 last year.

Tough time to be losing a key assistant, in the middle of recruiting season.

Jackie Burik was the best point guard I've seen play for Fordham. Hands down.
As a true point guard, I'd have to agree.

Yes, thanks.
7  The Fordham Forums / All Other Fordham Rams' Sports / Re: EBB Lose Kelly? on: June 18, 2017, 09:06:11 pm
Orlando is a terrible place to anything. Middle of a very hot state, far from water. Basically living in a swamp, but a swamp works for the university of Florida, so what do I know.
Weather takes some getting used to, especially coming from the NE, but there are lots of lakes and it's an hour from Daytona Beach.  Traffic has gotten bad but she'll be on the opposite side of town from the resorts.  (I lived there for 7 years)
8  The Fordham Forums / All Other Fordham Rams' Sports / WBB Lose Kelly? on: June 18, 2017, 07:43:53 pm
It looks like freshman guard Anna Kelly may have transferred to Central Florida.  We don't lose good players like that under Coach Gaitley.  I guess she thought the guard position was getting too crowded, although Orlando is not a bad place to go to school.

We have essentially 3 red-shirt freshmen guards in Cavanaugh, Jillings and Heremaia, incoming guard Kwaitkowski, current starter Kreslina, who is playing for Latvia this summer (but could play forward), often used Fomina, and starting PG, Holden.
9  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Lombardo to Coach at Lehigh on: June 14, 2017, 04:16:00 pm
2015 Ram grad and former infielder, Kayla Lombardo, who had been a writer for SI and ExcelleSports, was named Assistant Coach at Lehigh.  They always have a good team, often winning the Patriot League, and were ranked around #75 in the last RPI this year.  We play them almost every year, (we won 4-2, 6-1 and lost 4-1 to them this year).  She'll be about the 6th former player or coach of Bridget's whose new team that we play against.

She's going to keep on writing articles, but I suspect they'll be more limited.

Good luck to Kayla, except when they play us!

While I covered elsewhere in the baseball thread, I'll follow up here since this is specific to the subject.

Jimmy was picked ahead of the A10 pitcher of the year from St. Bonaventure, Aaron Phillips, who went in the 9th round.

Here's a NY Post story on him being drafted:  http://nypost.com/2017/06/13/fordham-star-stunned-by-mlb-draft-call-in-unreal-moment/

Grad student RHP and captain Jimmy Murphy got drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 8th round (#248 overall) in the 2017 draft.

13  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Softball Coaches Named Co NFCA Mid Atlantic Staff of the Year on: June 13, 2017, 01:05:18 pm
Bridget, Reese Mariconda and Gabby Leuty were named Co Mid Atlantic National Fastpitch Coaches Association Staff of the Year along with Notre Dame's staff.  Bridget won the award in 2010 and 2011 as well.

http://fordhamsports.com/news/2017/6/13/softball-named-nfca-mid-atlantic-coaching-staff-of-the-year.aspx

Here's the entire list.  14 staffs received the honor.  https://nfca.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7503:fourteen-programs-earn-nfca-division-i-regional-coaching-staff-of-the-year-awards&catid=109&Itemid=149&Itemid=152

I've yet to figure out how they assign schools to a region.  e.g., we are in the Mid Atlantic.  James Madison is in the Northeast.
14  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: Softball in the NCAA's on: June 12, 2017, 04:21:55 pm
In the final coaches' poll, Oklahoma was #1.  As to our opponents, Florida, whom we lost to was #2; Baylor, whom we beat was #7; Utah, whom we lost to, was #14; BYU, whom we lost to was #21; Tulsa, whom we beat was #22; Mississippi State, whom we beat, was tied for #30; and Florida Int'l, whom we lost to, was #34.  (So 3-4 vs top 34 teams)

I haven't seen a final RPI yet to see where we wound up.  While different polls, all of the above opponents moved up from the comparable May 14 RPI except for Florida and BYU who dropped 1 spot, so, in theory, we should be better than our then #44.

16  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: Softball add's 2 more recruits- A freshman and a transfer on: June 11, 2017, 01:31:32 pm
Fordham recruit page rauch of Binghamton hs pitched two excellent games yesterday in the nysphsaa state championships but her team lost 1-0 in the finals to east meadow. She throws hard and has a tremendous change up. I think with some added strength and maturity plus being coached up she has the ability to be a very good player for us and she seems happy to be coming to rose hill. If not for some poor base running and lack of a timely hit her team could have repeated as state champs.
Agree from all I've heard.  She had 16 Ks and a 2-run HR to win one of the games.
17  The Fordham Forums / All Other Fordham Rams' Sports / Re: Baseball Gets Improbable Win on: June 10, 2017, 11:18:41 pm
Our A10 rep, Davidson, lost in 15 innings in the super regionals to A&M in a best of 3.  They were then up 6-2 in the 2nd game but lost 12-6.  A&M moves on to Omaha.  Nice run for an A10 team though.

19  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: Softball add's 2 more recruits- A freshman and a transfer on: June 07, 2017, 03:09:56 pm
I would say these are good but not "great" additions.  We definitely needed depth at catching and Roark will likely be a starter as we only had Michael left on the roster.  She may have caught in only 2-3 regular season games at the most in her 2 years on the team and had no hits in 5 ABs.  Bridget's done well with transfers though and is high on Roark.

One of the freshmen coming in, Rauch, can currently pitch 68 mph, which may be one of the hardest throwers we've ever had.  She may be able to add to that speed with a good pitching coach, one like Laura Winter, unfortunately who we let go a year ago to give a job to our former catcher, Gabby Luety.  Obviously, movement and changes of speed are needed as well as we saw in the WCWS.  When they lost their movement, their upper 60, low 70 mph pitches got hit out of the park.

I haven't seen the 2017 rankings, but in 2016, Rauch's Conklin Raiders travel team was #79 in the country and 4th in the NE.  Here's the link.  Notice how few NE teams are in the top 100.  http://www.usclubrankings.com/fastpitch/rankings/70-28-2

The big question marks will be who can take over SS and CF.  I'm guessing Hughes may move to SS from 2b and Storm or an incoming freshman (Rauch when not pitching) play 2b.  Canessa was a converted infielder playing CF and eventually solidified the OF but not immediately.  One of the incoming freshmen (maybe Pinto) who show they can hit would be my guess to take over that CF position.  Skrepenak has the arm but is a little shaky sometimes defensively.  She's better in RF (along with Aughinbaugh, a better hitter, when she doesn't pitch), leaving Figueroa, with less of an arm, in LF.

Johnston and Shaw are probably solidified at 3b and 1b, maybe with Johnston being DH and a good freshman hitter playing one of the 2 positions, with Shaw moving to 3b if necessary.

The other big overall void to fill will be the loss of Van Hoven's (.356), Mayer's (.344) and Canessa's (.346) bats.  They also had a total of 16 HRs, 112 RBIs and 33 SBs, with an average .430 OBP.  Rarely does a freshman put up those kinds of numbers.

Here's the link again as to the original 5 incoming freshmen:  http://www.fordhamsports.com/news/2016/11/21/softball-announces-five-early-nli-signees.aspx?path=softball

With 6 pitchers on the roster, assuming Quense doesn't come back, I don't see current freshman, Rundlett, a former Maine POY, who had a 8.40 ERA this year in 3 IP getting any time in the circle.  She should transfer.
20  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: Softball in the NCAA's on: June 06, 2017, 10:38:00 pm
#10 Oklahoma won, defending their championship with a come from behind 5-4 win over #1 Florida.  Both teams went to their #3 pitchers and even went to their #4's as the best were worn out from last night's 17 inning affair, throwing a combined 496 pitches.  Oklahoma brought in their #2 to close it out though.  Great series.

Oklahoma, as a #10 seed was the highest seed ever to win it.  They are only the 4th team to go back-to-back.  They only lose 1 player to graduation too.

As for common opponents, Okahoma beat Tulsa 1-0, 6-4 and 3-0; we beat Tulsa 7-6.  They lost to Arizona 4-3; we lost to them 8-1.  They beat Mississippi State 5-3; we beat them 9-3.  They split with Baylor, winning 3-2, 6-0 and 6-3 while losing 4-3; we beat them 1-0.  They beat Florida 7-5 and 5-4; we lost to them 4-0.

And so, my NCAA coverage has finally ended.  If you missed seeing this WCWS, you missed the best of the best.
21  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: Softball in the NCAA's on: June 05, 2017, 11:54:13 pm
txram, I'm watching and the announcer just said that 13 innings is the longest game in WS history.

Question...When the first pitcher was replaced in the 12th, did I hear correctly, that she was replaced by the same pitcher, who started the game? Then, I thought I heard that the other starting pitcher could not come in and pitch again. I was unaware of different substitution rules, but it's late, I'm tired, and maybe I heard incorrectly. Would you clarify please.

What an incredible game!
If the starter is replaced, she can come back in, but the replaced pitcher can't then re-enter unless she stays in the game at another position.  If she comes out of the game, she can't come back in.  Sometimes coaches will move them to the DH role so they technically remain in the game.
22  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: Softball in the NCAA's on: June 05, 2017, 09:09:58 pm
I was about to post about Oklahoma winning, but...

In game 1, Florida down 2-1 and down to their last strike in the 7th, tied it on a looping pop fly that fell in with the outfielders playing deep, scoring the runner from 1b, who had walked.

Oklahoma hitters moved up in the box and got a HR, a double and single on Barnhill's 74 mph rise ball to score their 2 runs.  Barnhill throws with a hop, which is illegal, but she hasn't been called on it even once in the post season.

Both SSs are incredible!  Unlike baseball, they have less than 3 seconds to field the ball and throw the runner out.

In the top of the 12th, Oklahoma got a double and a HR off Gourley, who replaced Barnhill, to go up 4-2.  Florida had 2 on and 2 out with 2 strikes in the bottom of the 12th and a double tied the game again.  Unbelievable!

This is the longest game in WCWS history, and maybe the best.

Oklahoma loaded the bases in the 15th and couldn't score.  They loaded them again in the 16th and couldn't score, having 1 runner just barely forced out at home.

In the top of the 17th, Oklahoma got a 3-run HR, their 3rd HR tonight against a staff that only gave up 7 in 66 games.  Florida loaded the bases in the bottom of the 17th, but could only get 1 run.  Oklahoma wins 7-5 in 17 innings and go up 1-0 in a best of 3.

Quite a game!

The talent and skill levels amongst these teams is incredible. We may be strong in the A10- but this is at a whole different level.
+1  Both individually and across the board.  The best of the best.  Several are on Team USA.

One of the big differences is that pitchers can get in the low 70's (equivalent to 100+ in baseball) with movement, vs A10 level usually being low to mid-60's at the most.

Interesting fact:  in 6 games, the WCWS has had 55,000 in attendance.  The women's bb 8 game regionals had 38,000.
25  The Fordham Forums / All Other Fordham Rams' Sports / Re: Baseball Gets Improbable Win on: June 04, 2017, 10:47:03 pm
While we didn't make the A10 tournament, which Davidson won, the A10 rep won the regionals and moved on to the super regionals.  VCU did in 2015, so I guess A10 baseball isn't half bad.
26  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: Softball in the NCAA's on: June 04, 2017, 03:46:58 pm
In one semi-final game, #1 Florida beat #6 Washington 5-2 on a 2-hitter, Washington scoring with 2 out in the 7th on an error and a HR.  They weren't even using their ace, Barnhill.  Gourley, a lefty, got her first start and had 10 K's.  Florida moves on to the finals.

#10, defending champs, Oklahoma beat #3 Oregon 4-2 with 4 runs in the 5th and move on to the finals.  Oklahoma has been hot lately and obviously playing better than their #10 seed.  I don't see them beating Florida though.

It'll be best of 3 finals starting Monday.

I realize at this point, there is no direct Fordham softball connection other than to say we lost to Florida 4-0 early in the year.  We faced Gourley, getting 1 hit off of her (by Hughes).  Mayer was the only batter who didn't strike out against her.  I thought I'd finish the NCAA thread though the final game.  It'd be good to say we played the eventual world champs once more, as we did Alabama in 2012, beating them 8-5, one of their only 7 losses that year.

Joe,

Congratulations to the team, the coaches and you.

I recall you mentioning many times that when you and your former teammates restarted the team that you had a 10-15 year plan.  I am going to say that even you could not have imagined how successful your efforts would be and that I think you exceeded the heights you were striving for.

Sailing has become one of Fordham's most successful programs and we are proud of you and the team
Joe, I second all this.  Congrats to all associated with the team.
