1  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Canessa and Johnston Win Weekly A10 Awards on: Today at 01:21:43 pm
Sidney Canessa won the weekly A10 Player of the Week award and Skylar Johnston won the Rookie of the Week award.

In game one of Wednesday's doubleheader sweep at St. Bonaventure, Canessa went 6-for-6, with five singles, a grand slam, four runs scored and a career-best eight runs driven in.

For the week, Johnston had a .643 batting average, .667 on base percentage and a .857 slugging percentage and had a hit in all four games, including three multi-hit performances.  She was sick and didn't play in the GW loss.

You may be referring to Frank Williams.  We had a bball player gain a starting spot as a db with the NY Giants.  I believe his name is Ken Parker.
Ken was a strong shut down defensive guard on the bb team who got drafted in the 16th round by the Giants.  He played one year, starting 7 games, but was never able to fully translate his bb defensive prowess to pro fb.

Rams up 9-0 in game 3 after 3.  Johnston is playing DP in this one and has singled and doubled twice.  Canessa hit a HR and Mayer has doubled.  Quense is in the circle.  No hits thru 3.

Quense gave up a walk and a single in the 4th but no runs.
In our half, Skrepenak hit a HR.  Canessa walked.  Hughes homered.  Rams up 12-0 after 4.

Stocks in to pitch for Quense in the 5th.  Hughes made an error gain at SS, where she's not used to playing.  A fly ball to Aughinbaugh in RF doubled the runner off 1b.  Stocks eneded it with a K.

Rams win via mercy rule 12-0.  Quense gave up 1 hit and 1 BB, with 2 Ks.
We had 10 hits.  Johnston had 3 and Storm had 2.  Canessa, Skrepenak and Hughes had HRs.  Canessa scored her 182nd career run, a program record.  She also got her 100th career walk, the third Ram to do so.

We had 2 errors in this one both by Hughes at SS, 5 total for the day and 6 for the series.   It sure will be good to have our regular lineup back in place, even if one by one.

Here's the SID's write up and box scores of the two games.  http://www.fordhamsports.com/news/2017/4/23/softball-splits-sunday-doubleheader-takes-series-vs-george-washington.aspx?path=softball

Here'sthevideo highlights:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_04qXVNFHc&feature=youtu.be

We go to 36-13, 12-5.  SJU lost 2 to UMass, who leapfrogged into 1st place.  Their third game in Philly was cancelled.  Dayton got upset by URI.
The standings are UMass 10-3, Fordham 12-5, Dayton 11-6, George Mason 11-6, SJU 9-5, SLU 7-9, GW 7-10, LaSalle 5-9, URI 5-12, St.Bonaventure 1-13.

UMass plays LaSalle next weekend, which should be 3 wins. We play Dayton.  The last weekend we play LaSalle and UMass plays Dayton, while George Mason plays SJU.
5  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: Softball vs GW 4/22, 4/23 on: Yesterday at 11:09:24 am
In game 2, Aughinbaugh is in the circle vs Costlow.  Quense is DP instead of Johnston, who is out sick.  Vergona moved up in the lineup to #5.

The game is tied at 1 after 4.  We've had 7 LOB.  Hughes has 3 BBs and Shaw has 2.

In the top of the 5th, Aughinbaugh gave up a single.  A rare illegal pitch was called to advance the runner.  Bridget came out to argue and that rarely happens as well.  A single scored a run, putting the Colonials up 2-1.
In the bottom half, Shaw led off with a single.  Vergona K'd.  Aughinbaugh's sac bunt wound up being a force.  Aughinbaugh stole 2b.  Storm popped up.  Rams down 2-1 after 5.

In the top of the 6th, Aughinbaugh gave up a HR to someone who hadn't had a HR this year.  Hughes followed with an error at SS.  Aughinbaugh then gave up a double before a comebacker ended it.
In the bottom half, Quense popped up, Skrepenak grounded out.  Canessa popped up.  Rams down 3-1 after 6.

In the top of the 7th, Aughinbaugh, Trivelpiece made a 2-bases error in LF where Figeuroa normally plays.  A WP moved the runner to 3b.  A CF HR to their best hitter, Cone, made it 5-1.  That was Cone's 18th HR this year.  Mayer made an error at 3b, our 3rd E this game.  A K ended it.
I can't finish coverage on this one, but it doesn't look good being down 5-1.   A loss puts us at 35-13, 11-5 and now a long shot to finish in first.
6  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: Softball vs GW 4/22, 4/23 on: April 22, 2017, 09:18:32 pm
SJU is playing UMass this weekend and UMass beat them 1-0 in game 1, giving us 2nd place in the A10.  SJU was in first at 9-3, we're at 11-4, UMass is at 8-3, Dayton 11-5.  We could possibly be back in 1st after this weekend, despite the injuries and illnesses that have plagued us, setting up the critical Flyers series next weekend.  UMass and Dayton then have to lay the last weekend of the year, while we get a much easier LaSalle team.
7  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: Softball vs GW 4/22, 4/23 on: April 22, 2017, 02:09:30 pm
Rams won game one 8-3. Game 2 has been moved to tomorrow when we'll play a doubleheader starting at 10 am.

Figueroa didn't play in game 1 and won't play tomorrow.  She's not 100% yet.  Per the announcers, so I can now be specific, she has a concussion.  She was hit in the head by a ball pre-game vs SJU.  I expect she'll be back for the Dayton series next weekend however.  I don't think Van Hoven will be back by then.

Quense pitched, Shaw at 1b, Storm at 2b, Hughes at SS and Mayer at 3b.  Skrepenak in for Figueroa in LF.

In game 1, we got 12 hits. Hughes had 3; Canessa and Johnston had 2.  The latter 2 along with Quense had 2 RBIs.  Canessa had a HR.  Shaw had 2 BBs.  Hughes had 2 doubles and Shaw had 1.  We had 13 LOB.  Canessa, Mayer and Aughinbaugh had SBs.  Johnston is coming around with her bat and came in as a highly touted hitter as a freshman this year.  Vergona, getting more ABs with Figueroa out, has upped her BA to .259 after bordering on the "Mendoza line" for much of the year and often being DH'd for.  The one we need to get going is Skrepenak , who is at .185 and who only hit .200 last year.

Quense gave up 3 runs on 3 hits (2 of which were doubles) with 2 BBs and 4 Ks.  2/3 of her outs were GBs, which usually means that she's on her game.  GW had the best hitting team in the A10 and Quense held them to just 3 hits.

Storm had the error at 2b.

Costlow didn't pitch for GW in this one and Quense held Cone hitless.

We're 35-12, 11-4.

Here's video highlights of the game:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAMUp-qr_os&feature=youtu.be

8  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Softball vs GW 4/22, 4/23 on: April 21, 2017, 03:00:19 pm
We play George Washington for a DH at home starting Saturday at noon, and a final game Sunday at 1:00.

We're tied for 3rd with Dayton at 10-4 so the series with them next weekend is pretty crucial.  SJU is 9-3 and UMass is 8-3.

GW is 23-19, 6-8 and have a current #201 RPI.  They have a new HC, who came from Mercer, but who had been an Assoc HC at LSU for 7 years, so he has strong credentials.

They have a national freshman of the year candidate in Jenna Cone, who is third in the A10 in BA at .403 and has already set the school HR record with 17.  She is out of CA and has an older sister on the team.  They have more power too as they are 1-2 in the A10 in doubles while hitting .313 as a team,  tops in the A10.  They are well-rounded, having swiped an impressive 65 of 71 bases.

Their best pitcher is Junior Sarah Costlow, who has a 2.54 ERA and about a 1.3 WHIP.  She doesn't get a lot of K's, but has a .243 BA against.  We beat her 3-1 last year, getting only 6 hits but also 6 walks.

With their fielding at a good .965 and pitching at a 3.52 ERA, one wonders how they can be a sub-.500 A10 team at the moment.  Their biggest relative weakness might be their control in the circle, having given up a lot of BBs and HBPs.  They got swept by Dayton, lost 2 to UMass and 2 to St. Louis and were run-ruled once by the former and the latter.

Here's the SID's pregame write up.  Check out the various rankings in the article.  Ryan Uhlich does a great job at doing the research and keeping those up to date.  http://fordhamsports.com/news/2017/4/21/softball-hosts-george-washington-this-weekend.aspx

I think we'll have Figueroa back in LF this weekend after being out for about 10 days with a freak injury.  Van Hoven won't be back yet, however.  From her not being pinch run for vs the Bonnies, I suspect Quense is near 100% at least as to one of her injuries.

As mentioned previously, I probably can't cover any of these games as I'll probably be losing my butt at the tables in Vegas, or on the lanes in the Open Tournament.
9  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: Softball vs Bonnies 4/19 on: April 21, 2017, 02:23:29 pm
And there winds up being actually 1 team not on others' schedule at all.  This year it was St. Louis for us; last year it was LaSalle.

We play 23 regular season A10 games if we get them all in:  7 3-game series and 1 2-game series.  The weekend 3-game series allows for a flexible schedule, including moving games to Friday in order to try and get all of the games in.

This change came about a couple of years ago (2015?).  Previously, each team was scheduled twice.  There were (and still are) no makeups.  It infuriated Bridget when St. Joe's would call games on the account of rain/field conditions, when she felt the games were playable, if not on the then St. Joe's field, at least on an alternative field.  She thought St. Joe's was avoiding us to make the playoffs or get a better seed.

The end of year coaches' conference brought in the change to the new schedule.  St. Joe's since built their own field, which is more weather-friendly.

How they determine who doesn't get played by whom, I'm not sure but I'll try and find out.

In the 5th in game 2, Storm flied out.  Vergona doubled.  Aughinbaugh and Canessa flied out.  1 LOB.
In the bottom half, Aughinbaugh got 2 GB outs and a fly out.  Rams up 8-1 after 5.

In the 6th, Hughes walked.  Mayer doubled.  New pitcher, Hickling for SBU.  Shaw was intentionally walked to load the bases.  Skrepenak singled home a run.  A WP scored a run.  Quense walked, reloading the bases.  She wasn't pulled for a PR, so I'm thinking she's feeling better.  Storm singled up the middle, scoring 2.  Vergona popped up.  Aughinbaugh was out on a bunt attempt.  Canessa flied out.
In the bottom half, Aughinbaugh booted a comebacker.  She got a GB out that hit the runner, gave up a single, Quense missed a GB at 1b, got a foul pop, gave up a walk and a run, and a K to end it.

Rams win 12-2 via mercy rule in 6. We're 34-12, 10-4.  Our next games are this weekend vs GW at home, the first game starting at noon on Saturday, which I probably can't cover.

We had 16 hits.  Mayer and Vergona had 3.  Shaw and Storm each had 3 RBIs.
Aughinbaugh gave up 5 hits, 2 unearned runs, with 3 Ks and 3 BBs.

We had 4 errors and our fielding percentage is dropping like a rock.  All 10 runs today were unearned.
12  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: Softball vs Bonnies 4/19 on: April 19, 2017, 03:51:49 pm
In game 2 vs SBU, Aughinbaugh is in the circle for the Rams.  Hehir, (4.70 ERA) is pitching for SBU.

We have the same hitting lineup as the lst game with Quense at 1b defensively, Storm at 2b, Hughes at SS and Mayer at 3b.  Skrepenakin LF, Canessa in CF and Shaw in RF.

In the 1st, Canessa grounded out.  Hughes and Mayer singled.  A deep fly out by Shaw moved the runners up.  Johnston popped up.  2 LOB.
Aughinbaugh gave up an infield single.  Vergona threw a bunt attempt into RF, scoring a run, with the batter getting to 3b.  A GB to Mayer at 3b got the runner at home.  2 fly outs to LF ended it.  Rams down 1-0 after 1.

In the 2nd, Quense K'd swinging.  She takes more pitches than anyone else and often gets in a hole.  Storm grounded out.  Vergona singled and a WP moved her to 2b.  Aughinbaugh blooped a single, scoring Vergona.  Aughinbaugh stole 2b.  Canessa walked.  Hughes popped up.  1 LOB.
In the bottom half, Aughinbaugh gave up a single that Shaw let go by her in RF for an error, another case of a player not being in her usual position.  She gave up another single, got a K, Vergona threw the runner out at 2b, she gave up a walk, and (barely) got a force at 2b.  Game tied 1-1 after 2.

In the 3rd, Mayer singled.  Shaw hit a 2-run HR, her 12th, and 58th RBI. Johnston walked. Quense grounded out.  Storm tripled off the RF fence, scoring a run.  Vergona singled home a run.  Aughinbaugh bunted for a hit.  A bad throw on it moved the runners to 2nd and 3rd.  A Canessa sac fly scored a run.  Hughes doubled home a run but was thrown out at 3b.
In the bottom half, Aughinbaugh got a comebacker, a fly out, a single, and a K.  Rams up 7-1 after 3.

In the 4th, Mayer flied out.  Shaw hit another HR.  Her 2nd of the game and 3rd of the day.  Long gone!  Johnston singled.  Quense K'd again.  Skrepenak, PR-ing for Johnston, was called out for leaving too soon stealing 2b.
In the Bonnies' half, Aughinbaugh got a fly out, a GB out, gave up a walk, and got a K.  Rams up 8-1 after 4.

13  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: Softball vs Bonnies 4/19 on: April 19, 2017, 02:38:02 pm
Why do we only play them twice?
I think to even the total games played in conference.  Each team should play one competitor only twice, the rest 3 times.  We drew SBU.  UMass drew URI and SJU drew LaSalle.

I'm not sure how it is done, but there's probably some relationship to the prior year finish.
14  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: Softball vs Bonnies 4/19 on: April 19, 2017, 01:48:51 pm
Quense is in the circle vs Borysevicz.  Storm is DP for Skrepenak (LF).  Figueroa and Van Hoven are still out.  I think the former may be back this weekend vs GW.  Rain is threatening.  It would be bad to have these two games (wins) rained out.  Most A10 rainouts are not made up.

In the first, Canessa and Hughes singled.  Mayer walked.  Shaw's sac fly scored a run.  A Johnston GB scored a run.
In the bottom half, Quense gave up a leadoff double but pitched her way out of it.  Rams up 2-0 after 1.

In the 2nd, Storm and Vergona singled.  Aughinbaugh lined out to RF, moving Storm to 3b.  Canessa singled home a run.  Hughes popped up to the pitcher but a throwing error scored a run.  Mayer grounded out as the rain is coming down harder now.
In the bottom half, Quense is having problems holding onto the wet ball.  She gave up a 1-out single off Johnston's glove at 3b, which could have been an error.  Then a soft LD single off Mayer's glove at SS, which also could have been caught.  Mayer then booted a GB to load the bases.  A single off Quense's, then Mayer's glove scored 2.  Another single off Quense's glove loaded the bases.  She then walked in a run on 4 pitches.  A bloop triple down the RF line skidded by diving Aughinbaugh scored 3 more runs before a fly out ended it.  Aughinbaugh is not an outfielder.  She's in the lineup for more offense.  All of the runs were unearned.  After 2, the Rams are down 6-4.

In the 3rd, Shaw hit an opposite field HR, her 11th.  Johnston singled.  Quense flied out to deep CF.  Storm was HBP.  Vergona walked.  Aughinbaugh walked home a run.  New pitcher, Wood (3.32 ERA) for the Bonnies.  Canessa singled home 2 runs.  Hughes bunted for an out.  Mayer walked to load the bases.  Shaw flied out to the CF wall. 3 LOB.
In the bottom half, Storm to 2b, shifting Hughes to SS and Mayer to 3b.  Quense retired the side in order.  Rams up 8-6 after 3.

In the 4th, Johnston lead off with a double.  Quense walked as the rain threatens again.  Storm popped up.  Vergona singled plus an error on LF allowed Johnston to score.  Aughinbaugh walked to load the bases.  Canessa hit a grand slam, her 4th HR this year and 7th RBI this game, on a 4/4 tear.  Hughes flied out.  Game coverage was lost so I don't know what Mayer did.
In the bottom half, the Bonnies got 2 on with not outs then Hughes made a throwing error at SS, scoring a run.   A hit to RF scored another run as Aughinbaugh threw the hitter out at 1b. Rams up 13-8 after 4.

In the 5th, Johnston grounded out.  Quense doubled to LCF.  A Storm fly out to RF moved Quense to 3b.  Vergona lined out to 3b.
In the bottom half, Shaw made a diving catch on a LD to 1b.  A GB and LD comebacker ended the inning.  Rams up 13-8 after 5.

In the 6th, Aughinbaugh got an infield hit.  Canessa singled (now 5/5) and a certain A10 POW.  Hughes walked to load the bases.  A Mayer sac fly scored a run.  Shaw was more or less intentionally walked, which loaded the bases.  Johnston singled home a run.  Quense doubled home 3 runs, bringing the run rule into play.  Storm singled.  New pitcher, Hicking (5.92 ERA) for SBU.  ergona singled home a run.  Aughinbaugh dropped in a single to load the bases.  Canessa singled (6/6) home a run, her 8th RBI.  Hughes grounded out, scoring a run.  Mayer doubled home 2.  Shaw popped up to finally end it.
In the bottom half, Stocks in to pitch for Quense, gave up a single but that was it.

Rams win 23-8 in 6 via the mercy rule.  That's a new team run record, beating the 22 we had against Temple in 2007.  We had more hits (25) once vs St. Peter's in 2010.  We had 21 hits in this one. Canessa had 6, (a new single game Ram record), Johnston and Vergona 3.  Canessa had 8 RBIs.  Mayer and Quense had 3.  Quense gave up 6 hits, no earned runs, had 2 Ks and 4 BBs.   We had 2 errors and a couple more that could have been errors, not to mention, Aughinbaugh's over-aggressive play in RF with the bases loaded.  We need our injured players back if we're going to win the A10.

We go to 33-12, 9-4.  GW beat GMU in their game 1 to give us a little breathing room in the standings.

The second game should start at around 3:45.
15  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Softball vs Bonnies 4/19 on: April 18, 2017, 02:57:53 pm
Unlike most of our series with A10 competitors which are 3 games, this will only be a DH.  It benefits Dayton and SJU to have had 3 games against them.  The first game in Olean starts at 1:00.

While the Bonnies are often near the bottom of the A10, they always give us very competitive games, including last year's two extra inning ones.

This year they are 10-28, 1-8, with their lone A10 win vs LaSalle.   They were run-ruled by SJU and Dayton.  They are the lowest RPI ranked A10 team at #274.

They hit only .225 as a team, have two players with power, and one with good speed.  They are not strong defensively and opponents steal a lot of bases on them.

Their pitching has an ERA of 4.64, and their most used pitcher, Josie Borysevicz, has a 3.96 ERA.  She does have about a 3:1 K:BB ratio, however.

16  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Shaw A10 Player of the Week Again on: April 17, 2017, 04:06:15 pm
Junior Madi Shaw was named A10 Co-Player of the Week, the third time this year that she's won POW honors.

Her 54 RBI's are 6th in the country and 1st in the A10.  She's an RBI machine.  She upped he BA to .386, second on the team only to Jess Hughes' .395 and is 5th in the A10.  She had a team-leading .361 last year.

She also played 1b, 3b, SS, and RF last week as well.

17  The Fordham Forums / All Other Fordham Rams' Sports / Baseball Gets Weekly A10 and National Honors on: April 17, 2017, 03:36:11 pm
I haven't kept everyone up to date on my former team since opening weekend, but baseball has been doing well, with an 18-13, 7-4 record, good for 4th in the A10 behind VCU (10-2), last year champs URI (8-3), and George Mason (6-3).  We have big games vs VCU this next weekend and URI the weekend after.

Last week we got an A10 Pitcher of the Week and National Player of the Week Award for Reiss Knehr, who had 16 Ks vs SJU, the most for a Ram pitcher since 1956.  11 of the 16 Ks were in a row.

Kyle Martin was A10 Co-Pitcher of the Week with a pair of relief wins, upping his record to 5-1 for the year.

http://fordhamsports.com/news/2017/4/17/baseball-rams-pick-up-weekly-a-10-and-national-awards.aspx

Senior Luke Stampl leads the team with a .341 BA and .553 slg %.  We're hitting .263 overall vs opponents' .239.  We have 15 HRs to opponents' 10.

Our pitching has a combined ERA of 3.74 to our opponents' 3.79 and we average almost 1K/inning.  Grad Student Jimmy Murphy leads the starters with a 2.59 ERA, with about a 1.1 WHIP.

We don't play the strength of schedule that softball does.  Other than opponent Long Beach State (#13 now), only URI at #65 is in the RPI top 100.  The A10 then drops off to VCU at #140 and SLU at #143.  Despite our decent record, we're at #193, behind the Bonnies at #180.  There are 300 Div 1 teams ranked.  In the NE, St. John's is #25, Binghamton is #44, and UConn is #51.
18  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: Softball vs UMass 4/14-4/15 on: April 17, 2017, 02:25:21 pm
Good response, Ace.

Figueroa, a .300+ hitter and very good defensive outfielder, was also out last week with an injury and I suspect may be out vs the Bonnies.  Hopefully she'll be back vs HE over the weekend.

We were predicted to win the A10, which I think we would have done had we remained healthy.  I doubt we'll win the regular season, but if we have everyone back healthy for the playoffs, we should should still have an excellent chance.

Our early notable wins and high RPI was a little of a surprise, but several games could easily have gone the other way.

With pitching as critical as it is in softball, not having your ace Quense at 100% and having inexperience behind that will usually lead to some losses you shouldn't normally have.  Since Quense keeps getting pulled every time she is on base for a pinch runner, I think it's more than a sore arm.  On the other side, another's team's ace could "be on her game" against us and we have to face her twice in an A10 series.

Losing one's 3rd best hitter and best defensive infielder in Van Hoven on top of that has cost us several conference games.  Even if she makes it back for the playoffs, I doubt she'll be at the level she was at when she was injured though.

I know my posts carry a lot of detail, NYRam07, so I can understand you not fully recognizing what was going on.  I've been criticized sometimes for it being "too informative", but I try to let everyone know all about Fordham's best team.  Their game times often don't allow a lot of fans to follow them closely.  If you ever have any questions, feel free to shoot me a private message.  I often have info I can't publish on the board, but may be willing to share with true fans.

20  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: Softball vs UMass 4/14-4/15 on: April 15, 2017, 02:35:23 pm
In game 3, Aughinbaugh is pitching with Quense at 1b and Shaw at 3b.  Denis is pitching for UMass (2.09 ERA).

In the 1st, Canessa walked and stole 2b.  (10/10)  Hughes K's but reached 1b on an error by the catcher.  Canessa to 3b.  Hughes was caught stealing and hasn't stolen a base in the last couple of weeks.  Mayer singled home a run.
In the bottom half, Aughingbaugh gave up 2 singles but no runs.  Rams up 1-0 after 1.

In the top of the 2nd, Johnston hit a LD single off the CF wall.  Vergona bunted her to 2b and Trivelpiece bunted her to 3b.  Aughinbaugh bunted her home on a squeeze that UMass tried to get the runner at home instead of 1b.
In the bottom half, Aughinbaugh gave up a leadoff single.  A sac bunt moved the runner over.  She then gave up another single.  Runner stole 2b with no throw.  A pop up and fly out ended the threat.  These UMass announcers are BAD.  They used to have the best in the A10.  Rams up 2-0 after 2.

In the 3rd, Canessa grounded out.  Hughes walked.  Mayer grounded into a force.  Shaw doubled and was out at 3b trying to stretch it, but Mayer scored before the tag.
In the bottom half, Aughinbaugh got a comebacker, Skrepenak made a diving catch in LF, then Trivelpiece made a nice catch in RF.  Rams up 6-3 after 3.

In the 4th, Hughes singled.  Mayer got an infield single.  Shaw singled to load the bases.  Quense added to her team K lead.  (29)  A WP scored a run.  Johnston singled home 2 runs.  Vergona K'd.  Trivelpiece singled but 2 were LOB.
In the bottom half, Aughinbaugh gave up a single and a 4-pitch walk, got a GB out, then a single and a run, and a sac fly and a run.  A single misplayed by Trivelpiece on RF into a "double" allowed the batter to reach 2b and another run to score.   Rams up 5-3 after 4.

In the 5th, we went down in order.
In the bottom half, Aughinbaugh gave up a single but that was it.  Rams up 6-3 after 5.

In the 6th, we went down in order again.
In the bottom half, Aughinbaugh gave up a single to CF then a bunt single, but pitched out of it.  Rams up 6-3 after 6.

In the 7th, Shaw got a 2-out double.  Quense walked.  Johnston singled home Shaw.  Her 3rd hit in this one and 5th of the day.  She's coming around.  Vergona grounded out.
In the bottom half, Aughinbaugh gave up a HR, Cozza's 1st of the year.  She then gave up an infield single.  A short pop fly to CF dropped in.  A GB ended it.

Rams win 7-4.  Go to 31-12, 8-4, but we remain in 4th behind SJU (9-3), UMass (8-3), and Dayton (10-4).  UMass plays SJU still and we play Dayton (next weekend).  We play GW first though mid week.

We got 10 hits, with Shaw and Johnston had 3 and Mayer had 2.
Aughinbaugh went the distance, giving up 13 hits with 0 Ks and 1 BB.  Not her best performance either to a team hitting in the .250's.  Our pitching gave up 35 hits in the 3 games.

21  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: Softball vs UMass 4/14-4/15 on: April 15, 2017, 12:16:22 pm
In game 2, Quense is pitching, Shaw at 1b, Trivelpiece in RF, Johnston is DP hitting for Skrepenak in LF.  Hughes and Mayer switched in the lineup to 2-3.  Colleran is pitching for UMass again.

In the 1st, Hughes walked, advanced to 2b but was LOB.
In UMass' half, Quense hit 3 batters then gave up a single, scoring a run.  She hasn't had her control since she got her sore arm/shoulder a few weeks ago.  She gave up another single which scored 2 runs.  Rams down 3-0 after 1.

Johnston singled but we had 2 Ks and she was LOB.
In the bottom half, Quense gave up a single, then a double, scoring a run, then a single, scoring another run.  It's clear she's not her normal self.  We may get run-ruled!  She then gave up an infield single.  Storm made an error scoring another run.  The wheels are falling off.  A single scored UMass' 7th run.  Rams down 7-0  after 2.

In the 3rd, we had 3 GB outs.
In the bottom half, Quense gave up a leadoff single, UMass' 8th hit.  Mayer made at error.  Quense gave up a walk, then a single, which led to a run.  Rams down 8-0 after 3 and are now subject to the run rule after 5.

In the 4th, Mayer walked.  Quense reached on a error.  Both were LOB as we had two more Ks that inning.
In their half, Quense reited the side in order.  Rams down 8-0 after 4.

In the 5th, Trivelpiece walked.  Canessa singled.  Hughes reached on an error by CF; 2 runs scored.  Shaw hit a 2-run HR, her 52nd RBI.  Quense singled but was LOB.
In the bottom half, Quense gave up a leadoff single, a double, then a FC scored a run while another was thrown out at home.  Quense then gave up another single, her 12th hit.  A sac fly scored another run.  Rams down 10-4 after 5.  We haven't given up this many runs in a game all year.

In the 6th, Johnston singled but that's all we got.
In the bottom half, with Rundlett in to pitch for Quense, she gave up 2 singles.  Vergona was called for catcher's interference to load the bases.  What else can go wrong?  Well, she then walked 2 batters and allowed 2 more runs to make it 12-4, that's what.

Rams lose 12-4 via run rule.  How embarrassing.  I don't recall the last time we were run-ruled in A10 play.  It could have been in 2002, Bridget's first year.  We're 30-12, 7-4 and I think we're now in 4th place behind UMass, SJU and Dayton.

We got just 5 hits.  Johnston had 2.
Quense gave up 10 runs, 8 of which were earned, on 12 hits with 2 Ks and 1 BB.  My guess is that she's pitching with an injury.  I'd almost prefer to have seen Stocks to have started in this one.  Rundlett gave up 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 BBs.  That won't help her 12.00 ERA any.

As I said after the last game, with the injuries, we're in trouble!

Next game follows at about 2:30.

Aughinbaugh, who has been pitching better lately than Quense, is pitching in this one.  Canessa moves to leadoff, then Mayer and Hughes at the top of the lineup.  Quense is at 1b and Shaw is giving it a try in RF.  Johnston is DP, hitting for Skrepenak (LF).  Hughes is at SS, Mayer at 3b and Storm at 2b.   All have played these positions before, but never at the same time.

With Vergona at .194, Skrepenak at .172 and Storm at .160, there is a big falloff in the offense after the top 4.  Figueroa (.304) isn't playing - injury and day to day.  That's 2 key starters out.

Colleran (2.99 ERA) is pitching for UMass.  I'm sure they are for this series.

In the 1st, Canessa singled, stole 2b, (now 9/9) and moved to 3b on a Mayer groundout.  Hughes' GB FC scored Canessa.  Shaw flied out and Quense struck out for the team-leading 28th time.
Aughinbaugh gave up a single and a double,  but she pitched her way out of it.  Rams up 1-0 after 1.

In the 2nd, Storm was HBP and moved to 3b on a Vergona single.  Vergona was thrown out trying to steal 2b, her first attempt this year.  Storm stayed at 3b and was LOB.
In the bottom half, Hughes made a throwing error at SS.  (Have I said before we miss Van Hoven?)  Aughinginbaugh got the rest in order.  Rams up 1-0 after 2.

In the 3rd, Mayer singled but was LOB.
In the bottom half, Aughinbaugh gave up a double and a walk, committed an error to load the bases then gave up a grand slam to Klee, her first HR this year and only the team's 5th.  Aughinbaugh then hit a batter before getting out #3.  Rams down 4-1 after 3.

In the 4th, we went down in order.
In their half, Aughinbaugh retired the side in order.  Rams down 4-1 after 4.

In the 5th, Vergona walked.  Canessa was HBP.  Mayer hit into a DP.
Stocks into pitch for Aughinbaugh.  She gave up a single, but that was it.  Rams down 4-1 after 5.

In the 6th, Quense singled with 2 out, but that was it.
In the bottom half, Stocks gave up a bunt single.  Runner stole 2b.  Opponents are 25/29 in SBs.  A single scored a run.  Rams down 5-1 after 6.

In the 7th, with 1 out, Vergona and Storm singled.  Canessa got an infield single to load the bases.  Mayer walked to score a run.  Hughes hit into a force at home.  Shaw singled home 2 runs.  She now has 50 RBIs.  Quense grounded out to end it.

Rams lose 5-4, go to 30-11, 7-3 and are knocked out of 1st place in the A10.  We're in 3rd now behind UMass and SJU and barely ahead of Dayton.

We got 8 hits and made 2 errors.  Vergona and Canessa each had 2 hits.
Aughinbaugh gave up 4 runs, 3 earned, on 5 hits, with 1 K and 1 BB.  Stocks gave up 1 run on 3 hits with 1 K.

With the injuries, this team could be in trouble for the playoffs, which we will still make.  We need to win both games tomorrow to help keep a better seeding.  No way we get an NCAA bid without winning the A10 now.

25  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Softball vs UMass 4/14-4/15 on: April 14, 2017, 12:40:28 am
UMass is making a comeback, being 17-17, 6-2, in 2nd place in the A10, 1/2 game behind us.  They'd be tied with us if they played 3 games vs URI instead of just 2.  They don't play as tough an OOC schedule as they used to but they beat Lehigh and had a 1-run game loss to Baylor.

Their RPI is #162 to our #51.

They hit .254 as a team, but it's their pitching and fielding that has noticeably improved, with a 2.95 ERA, led by Texas freshman Candace Denis' 2.09.  She's also 20/22 in SBs.  They have very little power so they play mostly "small ball".

We play one game Friday in Amherst at 3 pm and 2 on Saturday starting at noon.

In the top of the 6th in game 2 vs Lehigh, Quense flied out.  Vergona K'd looking.  Skrepenak popped up.  First time we were down in order.
In the bottom half, with Aughinbaugh having a perfect game to this point, got a pop up, Shaw then made at error at SS, breaking up the perfect game.
She then gave up a double over Skrepenak' that should have been caught.  Our makeshift defense is hurting us here.  Figueroa probably would have caught that and kept the no  hitter alive.  A sac fly scored a run.  A GB ended it.  Rams up 3-1 after 6.

In the 7th, Hughes singled, her 3rd hit.  She hasn't tried to steal since she tweaked her ankle last week against St Joe's.  Canessa popped up.  Mayer singled and broke her aluminum bat.  She stole 2b.  Shaw walked to load the bases.  Aughinbaugh blooped a single to CF, scoring a run.  Johnston K'd looking with the bases loaded.  Quense singled home 2 runs.  Vergona K'd looking as well, her 3rd K of the game.  That will get her back on the DH'd-for list.
In Lehigh's last at bat, Aughinbaugh gave up a clean leadoff single, got a GB force and 2 fly outs.

Rams win 6-1.  We are now 31-10.  We gained a split.  Lehigh always gives us quality competition.

Aughinbaugh gave up 1 unearned run on 2 hits, with 4 Ks and 0 BBs.  She's been more of our ace lately since Quense came up with a sore arm/shoulder 2 weeks ago.

We got 11 hits.  Hughes got 3 and Shaw and Mayer got 2.

Bridget usually chooses offense over defense and our lineup today was no exception.  We've got to get better defensively though, or we'll lose some close ones.

We next play UMass there Friday at 3 pm, the a double header on Saturday.

In game 2, Auginbaugh is in the circle, Shaw at SS and Mayer at 3b.  Shaw hasn't played SS since HS; not even in travel ball.  Skrepenak is in LF, Trivelpiece in RF.  No Figueroa.  Johnston is DP for Trivelpiece.  Vergona is hitting for herself.

Sorem is pitching for Lehigh.

In the top of the first, Hughes singled and scored on a Canessa single.  Mayer walked.  Shaw hit into a force, as did Aughinbaugh.  Shaw and Aughinbaugh pulled off a double steal.  Bridget's gambling a little in this one, both with this and the defensive lineup.  Johnston singled home a run.  2 LOB.
In the bottom half, Aughinbaugh retired the side in order on a fly out and 2 GB outs.  Rams up 2-0 after 1.

In the top of the 2nd, Hughes walked but was LOB.
In the bottom half, Aughinbaugh got 2 Ks and a bunt attempt out.  Rams up 2-0 after 2.

In the top of the 3rd, Mayer singled.  Shaw tripled home a run, her 48th RBI.  Aughinbaugh grounded out.  Johnston popped up.  Quense flied out.  1 LOB (at 3b with no outs).
In their half, Aughinbaugh got a pop up, a K, and a GB out.  Rams up 3-0 after 3.

In our half of the 4th, Storm K'd looking.  Skrepenak K'd swinging.  Hughes got an infield hit off the pitcher.  Canessa grounded into a force.
In the bottom half, Aughinbaugh got 2 comebackers and a fly out.  Rams up 3-0 after 4.

In the 5th, Boyd in to pitch for Lehigh, with a 5.79 ERA.  Mayer popped up.  Shaw singled.  Aughinbaugh grounded into a force.  Johnston flied out.
In Lehigh's half, Aughinbaugh, perfect to this point, got a comebacker, a GB out, and a K.  Rams up 3-0 after 5.

Quense is in the circle, Aughinbaugh in RF, Storm is DP for Vergona, and a new lineup experiment, Trivelpiece is in LF for Figueroa.
Campbell, their ace, is pitching for Lehigh.

In the top if the first, Canessa doubled but was LOB.
In the bottom half, Quense gave up a bunt single, then another single, got a pop up bunt, Trivelpiece then made an error in LF (so much for that experiment) and a run scored, Quense got 2 GB outs.  Rams down 1-0 after 1.

In the 2nd, Quense got a bloop single and advanced to 2b on a SS error.  That was it.  Campbell has an excellent changeup that we've been fishing at.
In the bottom half, Quense gave up a 1 out triple down the RF line to the #8 hitter.  A squeeze attempt failed as Quense flipped to Vergona for the out.  A comebacker ended it.  Rams down 1-0 after 2.

Canessa walked in the 3rd with 2 out.  Mayer popped up for out #3 in a 16-pitch AB.
In their half, Quense gave up a bloop single, then a double that Trivelpiece maybe should have held to a single.  A GB to 2b scored a run.  Rams down 2-0 after 3.

In the 4th, Aughinbaugh walked, but that was all that we got.
In the bottom half, Skrepenak is in for Trivelpiece in LF and Storm for Hughes at 2b, defensively only.  Quense gave up a walk, a bunt single, a double, scoring 2 more.  Rams down 4-0 after 4.

In the 5th, Hughes got a 2-out single, but that was all.
Stocks in to pitch for Quense, who moves to 1b, with Shaw to SS for the 1st time; Mayer to 3b.  Storm made a fielding error at 2b and then threw the ball into the dugout, but Stocks pitched her way out of it.  Rams down 4-0 after 5.

In the 6th, Mayer doubled and Shaw singled her home, her 47th RBI.  Quense walked.  Both were LOB.
In Lehigh's half, Stocks retired the side in order.  Rams down 4-1 after 6.

In the 7th, Hughes walked with 1 out.  Canessa grounded into a force and Mayer back to the pitcher.

Rams lose 4-1.

We got only 5 scattered hits and had an equal number of Ks.  We had very few well hit fair balls.
Quense went 4 innings, giving up  4 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits, with 1 K and 1 BB.  Stocks went 2 innings, giving up 1 hit.

We're 30-10 now.  Our next game vs Lehigh will be at around 4:30 pm.
