Count me in among those agnostic regarding where the athletes come from. I like "made in America" as much as the next guy if it is possible, but we seem to have challenges that are caused but several well documented speed bumps (academic requirements, losing reputation, NYC not for everyone, working conditions, past coaching turmoil).

There was been talk among us that the NYC/CHSAA talent pool is contracting.  If it is, consider that the pool of D1 players who can also qualify academically might be contracting even faster.

Agreed on the question of where we recruit our players. As far as I'm concerned, they can come from anywhere as long as they are talented, contribute and are strong representatives of the university.

The academic issue is no longer a problem, as we now have more than adequate academic support. Of course, we don't have a Phys. Ed major or the like, but we are past the point where this has been a significant problem for our recruiting.

As for the NYC/CHSAA talent pool contracting, it's important to recognize that the pool of NYC talent has not contracted, what has happened is many of these players are now transferring to prep schools in order to become academically eligible. When they played at NYC high schools in the past, we could not recruit many of these players due to the fact that they were not academically eligible, so IMO we now have a better chance to land some of these kids when they prep and get their scores to become NCAA-eligible.

Keep an eye on 6' 6" SF Dominick Welch, who was committed to UMass but will prep at Spire Institute in Ohio, Class of 2018. This is a very talented player from Buffalo who plays for Jimmy Hart's Albany Rocks AAU club.

I'm not one to post much during the summer, but this one I couldn't resist bros. I know I've said much of this before, but it's been awhile.

The thing I remember most about Mandell's recruiting is when St. Bonaventure's Mark Schmidt passed him over after his campus visit there. Fast forward a year and I'm sitting there in the stands in Olean, watching young frosh Mandell Thomas and mega-talented senior Chris Gaston almost dual-handedly rip apart the Bonnies at the end of Gaston's last game as a Ram. Chris was always great, and Mandell was also really great that day. They couldn't stop Chris and had no answer for Mandell. The loss knocked the Bonnies out of the A-10 playoffs back when they had the stupid rule where not everyone got to participate. My wife (a St. Bonaventure grad) hated that rule, esp. that year!

Anyway, his (I believe) mom and at least one aunt and a couple of cousins were up in the stands yelling something like "that's what you get!" to the Bonnies bench. They were pretty vocal and I was loving it! Not too much though, as I wanted to make it back to my car alive.

It was a great game that was definitely a "if you haven't figure it out by now, he's arrived!" party for Mandell.

Great story, Belmont.

Mandell was a credit to Fordham - a class act and one of the best players to wear the maroon. A winner in every way.

Fordham has offered 6' 2" combo guard Jason Douglas-Stanley from Mt. Vernon High School, NY. He's a high velocity scorer who can play the point or shooting guard and averaged 23 points/game for the Riverside Hawks in the recent Adidas AAU circuit. He's Class of 2018.

As for Thomas, I do not recall. He was a virtual unknown when his name first came up and it was not a signing most here thought much of.

I remember hearing that towards the end of his recruitment, when he was playing very well in AAU ball, several A-10 teams tried to get involved but we pretty much had him locked up.

Update: just got confirmation that Duquesne was recruiting Mandell hard when we got his commitment.

I believe Mandell Thomas was offered by several other A-10 schools.

Sneaky good would make next season a real treat. One thing to recall is that with line-to-line coaching of JN's caliber, you can't just evaluate the team on what I'd call the "on paper" talent/recruiting evaluations. With the previous coach, those evaluations pretty much constituted the top line.

As for the local/foreign angle, I've decided I don't care. Years ago, when Fordham was a more regional university, bringing in a student-athlete from far away often carried a high risk that the kids would get homesick and transfer out. For a lot of them, it was their first time away from home, first trip on a plane, etc.,  and the only quick communication, long-distance phoning, was prohibitively expensive for most. Now, with email, social media, facetime, etc., not so much, and most kids have done a whole bunch of traveling before getting to college. So I think the "homesick risk" is largely dissipated.

And, as we know from some hard experience, sometimes the locals come with their posses, AAU handlers, little league parents, and all manner of other distractions a coach and a program can do without. Recruit the player, not his hometown.

+1.

Not so sure about that yet.....

6' 5" Class of 2018 Stepinac wing guard Alan Griffin, who has been offered by Fordham, is blowing up in AAU ball playing for the New York Rens. Seton Hall, St. John's, Alabama, Miami and others are now expressing interest.

Well Javontae Hawkins just signed with a pro team in Finland and Mandell Thomas just moved and signed with a team in the 2nd division in Turkey.

It also can't hurt that Bryant Dunston is one of the best basketball players in Europe.  2nd team All EuroLeague this past year.  For those who don't know what that is, its an equivalent of the champions league in soccer where the best teams from each country play in a European tournament.

Look at all his accolades.

Career highlights and awards
- All-EuroLeague Second Team (2017)
- BSL All-Star (2017)
- 2◊ EuroLeague Best Defender (2014, 2015)
- Turkish President's Cup winner (2015)
- Greek League champion (2015)
- Greek League Best Defender (2015)
- FIBA Intercontinental Cup champion (2013)

Yes, we are getting there, but have a ways to go before we are recognized internationally as a ticket to a pro contract.
18  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Recruiting Update on: July 17, 2017, 09:02:43 pm
The attraction to playing in the New York market for international players, along with Fordham's strong academics, are not key factors in landing them. In my many years of working with FIBA, I learned that international players are mainly interested in one thing: making money playing basketball. They want the fastest route to becoming a pro, whether it be in the NBA or elsewhere. If a program can provide that, they are interested.

What we have going for us in terms of international recruitment is Coach Ali Ton. He has much experience with this and many contacts overseas, so that will be the key to our success with recruiting international players until we reach the stage where we have a number of former internationals playing pro ball.
19  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: NCAA Men's Basketball Committee Will Place Greater Emphasis on Road Wins on: July 15, 2017, 08:07:18 pm
More on this:

The committee previously defined a quality win as any victory over a team with an RPI rank from 1 to 50. Now, it has changed the definition of quality win to mean one that comes at home against an opponent ranked 1 to 30, at a neutral site over a foe ranked 1 to 50 or on the road versus a team ranked 1 to 75.

A good idea, IMHO. Some teams who never go on the road for OOC games will have to rethink that strategy.

+1. Agreed. Good luck to Syracuse.

Hell of a prediction. My words two days prior to your prediction:

"Evans will come in heavier, I'll hold to the prediction that he'll be our best player/top scorer."

I've been saying it to people on this board since the day he committed. Must have trickled back to you.

Prediction: Tre Evans will be our best player this coming season.
24  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Recruiting Update on: July 13, 2017, 10:46:40 am
6'8" from Carmel and attends Iona Prep. This is from Big East Recruiting last month.

The 6-foot-8 forward provides a tough, two-way presence on both ends of the court. Heís an aggressive player down low, banging his way for a finish around the rim. He also has great rebounding instincts and crashes the offensive glass well. Defensively, heís a bruiser that isnít afraid to play physically.

So far, he has a ton of low to mid-major Division I offers, with Fordham, American, Colgate, Columbia, Howard, Hampton, New Hampshire, Quinnipiac, St. Francis (Pa.), Stony Brook, Siena, and Towson in the mix.

He also has interest from other Ivy League schools such as Brown, Penn, and Yale. According to Alexander, a few Big East schools have also emergedóGeorgetown and DePaul. It seems like St. Johnís can add itself to the conversation.

I believe we were the first school to offer him when he was in 9th grade.

25  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Rothstein's A-10 Offseason Notebook on: July 10, 2017, 02:25:24 pm
I think I'm in the minority here but I expect us to be better then next season and the reason I say that is I think our shooting should improve dramatically.  We are essentially replacing Hawkins and Anderson with Evans and Hicks.  While I think we may miss their athleticism and ability to get to the hoop, the three point shooting of Hicks and Evans will shine in Neubauer's offense.  I'm also very high on Havsa.  Watching videos of him play with the Turkish U-20 things makes me feel like his confidence is sky high right now and his shooting has looked great as well.  Don't underestimate his ability to create next year.

I think the X factor next year will be if either Ohams, Pekarek, or Tavares can step into that 4 role and really shine.  Ohams defensive intensity is fantastic and his passing is underrated but he really needs to improve his shot.  While Pekarek and Tavares have shown flashes of being great all around players but lack consistency.

Lastly, as long as everyone stays healthy I feel like this team has a much deeper bench in years past.  There will be some real talent outside the starting 5.  Take a look at the two lineups below.

First Unit
G- Havsa
G- Chartouny
G- Hicks
F - Ohams
F - Slanina

Second Unit
G - Zarkovic
G - Evans
G - Taveres
F - Pekarek
F - Bunting

There will be another player added to the roster soon.

Makes great use of his left hand on the dribble. Who else does he have offers from?
Alan , you are on a hot streak!

He's just blowing up in AAU play. Very good 3 point shooter, solid defender and rebounder. Has long arms and a quick release on his jump shot.

29  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / NCAA Weighing Changes for Blocking Transfers and Grad Transfers on: June 30, 2017, 09:50:41 pm
"One potential approach could be to require that the financial aid provided to graduate students count against a teamís scholarship limit for two years, regardless of whether the graduate student stays for two years or leaves when their eligibility is complete. Another concept for increasing that accountability is through the Academic Progress Rate calculation, specifically the eligibility and retention points for which a student would be held accountable as they pursue a graduate degree."

30  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: DePaul transfer Erten Gazi has committed to Fordham, per a source. on: June 28, 2017, 07:31:46 pm
I don't think that's fair. We've recruited talented players imo but we haven't hit those "on paper" homeruns we are all desperate to land. We may not have any Jon Severe type signings yet, but it appears to me we're building a team and we're developing players. I'll take that because, as you and others have said, we have a good coach.

I'm willing to set aside any panic/fear until midway through the season when we have a good sense of who we are as a team.

+1.

As usual, a well reasoned position, 07. I agree completely.
