Litwack was still the coach at Temple, game was at RHG      Zambetti was the shooter vs Marquette, single OT, not 3         2 of the 3 losses that season were vs Phila. zone Ds, ironic since Digger background was at Penn

Kenny Parker was an All State QB in NJ. He was also a very good basketball player but probably not All State. He was recruited to play football but was told that he could not be a college QB (thankfully our society has changed). He decided that if he could not be a QB then he would play basketball. John Bach was one of the few coaches recruiting him to play basketball because everyone thought he was going to play football.

At least that was the story from many years ago.

if we had an All Time Best Defensive Starting Five thread, he would be on my list

14  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Sengfelder to Boise st on: April 20, 2017, 05:29:44 pm

In an interesting note regarding grad transfers, the student newspaper at Fordham (The Observer) reported in its April 15 issue that Chris Sengfelder would transfer to Wake Forest. Instead, Sengfelder committed to Boise State.

Was Wake Forest close to landing the 6-7, 240-pounder? Since the paper went to print several days before Sengfelder announced his decision, the paper ran with Wake Forest as his destination.

Not a step up in conference, but Boise State has been Kenpom 96, 90 and 47 the last 3 years (in 2015 they made the NCAAs).  Hate to say that's a step up.  Fordham hasn't made the top 100 in the kenpom era, which goes back to 2002.

And while not the A-10 the MWC isn't bad.  Only 1 bid this year.  But in 2015 it got 3 bids, and in 2013 it was a 5 bid league, with Colorado St (Kenpom 22), New Mexico (23), San Diego St (31), UNLV (38) and Boise State (54) all making it.  So in last 5 years Boise State has been to 2 NCAAs and an NIT, even though it never won its conference tournament.

agree   MWC was only a shade below A-10 this past season per Sagarin     also, Boise SOS was stronger than ours and home attendance was far superior, several games exceeding 7K    plus, if he has a friend there, not such a strange move    enjoyed watching him play, his effort and wish him well

When you put two "should haves" in your first couple of sentences, that kind of says it all. Maybe Oregon was looking past Rhody - who knows? In the end it's only the final score that matters.

I'm up here in Bonaland where years ago they actually made a film about how they "should have" won the national championship years ago. Well, guess what? You didn't.

reminds me of the great Fordham "might have " after Howard Porter was declared ineligible after Villanova beat us in the NCAA ( in the unmentionable season )
no film was made but many of us felt we "might have" played UCLA in the finals if he had been declared ineligible prior to the game

Gov. Christie is now involved, imploring the four major sports leagues to kick in $125,000 each

brings back memories of when Fordham Prep was in danger of closing
19  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Coach Hurley on: April 06, 2017, 02:21:20 pm
True, but some of the kids who go there won't have similar options. The tuition at St. Anthony is very low compared to most other Catholic high schools in the area.

yep  St. Anthony $6,000   St. Peter's Prep $17,000

We all should ask ourselves one question with every single player that leaves the program.

1) is this player good enough to help us win an A-10 championship?

That's it that's all. If the answer is no , than honestly who cares. I'm sure JN feels the same way. Yes we could take a step back but a step back from 8-13 ? Who cares ! If these guys can't help you win an A-10 championship than go get the guys who can .

It's not exactly the same but how many dozens of players quit , transferred , left school before clawson won the patriot league?

Rather get them out now and bring in the right guys

thats quite a master plan     if this happened a year ago, or if we had some solid signees in the early signing period, I might agree that is JN's plan    seems more like the players making the judgement about the program   time will tell

like your question 1) but I think it is better asked on the way in, rather than the way out    I don't think we have that luxury, however, so we get the best that we can
22  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Where have they really gone? on: April 03, 2017, 01:01:36 pm
Wasn't there a Polish center who left with TBC and ended up at Kentucky.  Lucas Obrzut or something like that?  Did he get any run there?  I stopped following him after he wore the maroon.

Also, what about Adrian Walton?  Where did he go after Fordham?

Obrzut played 4 seasons at KY, 123 games, 7 - 8 mins per, 1.5 ppt   played 37 games in the D League thereafter

Walton went to Riverside Community College   also played for the Albany Patroons    assume he also maintained his Rucker League activity

I understand the college hoops landscape has changed, but whatever the landscape, we seem to come up on the short end and suffer setbacks in the ability to progress. If we sign a bunch of quality replacements, I would change my mind in this case.

only guessing, but I think the two biggest disincentives are the facilities  ( the gap between us and our competitors continues to widen ) and the lack of fan support . Players want to play in a lively atmosphere, which is rare at RHG these days. When there is a lively atmosphere, a large % of the fans are rooting for the opposition. I understood the lack of support in the last 2 seasons of the DW and Hill eras, but these last 2 seasons have been similar (fan wise ) while the teams were more competitive.

We will never know unless the players provide their thinking, which is very doubtful.

major obstacles need to be overcome and the plan to do so seems inadequate as institutional support is also questionable

fingers crossed

I am getting afraid to login..  This one is a stunner     don't watch much NBA but never viewed JC at that level    Europe / Asia / D League / 1 or 2 more years at Fordham
25  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Moving forward 2017-18 on: March 29, 2017, 12:04:49 pm
AA is another significant loss    any progress made in the past 2 seasons was due, in large part, to experienced players, Rhoomes, Thomas, Hawkins, CS, AA, JC     AA also displayed the clutch factor with the buzzer beaters and the big last shot vs Rhody season before last

in this new culture of departures, we seem to lose more than we gain     as far as starting over, unless we get some readily available quality players, I suppose we have no choice but we go down that road too often

one observation made ( not on this board ) is that perhaps the departing players would like to play in front of more fans at games than some programs draw at press conferences     our fan base is meager

name the court after Sisyphus
26  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Recruiting Update on: March 28, 2017, 11:50:03 am
Seems like Peter Kiss was known as a shooter coming out of prep school.  Could need time to adjust to the higher level of intensity of defense at the college level, but it could also be he was on a bad team forcing up shots.  I think Neubauer's offense definitely generates open looks from three but our current squad just couldn't knock them down consistently.  Here is brief write up from a recruiting website on his commitment.

"Another shot-maker, Notre Dame Prepís Peter Kiss, committed to Quinnipiac on Wednesday. The Bobcats had made Kiss a priority throughout the fall and consequently landed a versatile perimeter player who isnít just a shooter, but also a high level athlete. Kiss is the 5th Notre Dame player to commit to a D1 school in the class of 2016."

Bill Raftery will love the name

29  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Sengfelder to transfer on: March 23, 2017, 10:46:00 pm
bad news    so now even our ability to recruit good student athletes is biting us in the butt   graduating in 3 years is now common ?     one aspect that has not been mentioned, or at least I haven't noticed , is that this system does not seem to be very much fun to play in     grind   grind  grind   "win ugly"

hopefully temporary but it seems players want a bit more zip in the plan      not advocating wide open play but , by season end, our guys seem spent. it also does not seem to be the style that draws marginal fans, fairly low entertainment style

we zealots will return but to lose another rising senior with some quality is disturbing
30  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Not sure how people think this was a good season on: March 19, 2017, 05:31:09 pm
And on the recent occasions when something like that did happen -- Jon Severe, then Eric Paschall -- the "savior" didn't save us. Both had wildly inefficient freshman years on losing teams (which lacked experienced players). One left, the other didn't become the "X" factor for us.  I think we're in a much better situation now, where if we did get a hot-shot newcomer, they'd learn that PT is earned, not just handed out.

have to take issue with your "wildly inefficient freshman years" description for Severe ( A10 All Rookie selection ) and Paschall ( A10 Rookie of the Year )    deserved honors or did the Russians tamper with the voting ?

I will take recruits of that caliber 8 days a week. hot-shot newcomers help numerous programs in the country and help attract others . I recall numerous Christ the King players at the RHG at games in Severe's frosh season. We didn't land any and JS and EP did not lift the program as hoped but you have to land that type of player with some regularity if you want to rise to top 4 in A-10.
