Chris Bethel had several A10 offers. Any occasion to mention Bethel is also another opportunity to say F DW.

Paschall had A10 offers (VCU, George Mason)
John Severe didn't have any other offers from A-10 schools?
I believe Mandell Thomas was offered by several other A-10 schools.

The question was:
When was the last time Fordham "outrecruited" any other A-10 school?

Last time would be Chuba unless Tre Evans or one of our transfers were recruited and offered by other A10 schools.

That said, Severe was definitely offered by other A10 schools at some point, though they were eliminated by his last round of narrowing down.

As for Thomas, I do not recall. He was a virtual unknown when his name first came up and it was not a signing most here thought much of.

Ryan Canty is the last I can remember for sure.  Chose Fordham over Rhode Island, Saint Joseph's and Massachusetts.

Scratch that. Chuba Ohams had offers from VCU, DePaul, Rutgers and Providence.

4  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Recruiting Update on: July 17, 2017, 11:33:05 pm
ok so if I am hearing that Fordham has no real added advantage in recruiting international talent and we are getting the lets say 'non NCAA tournament talent level players than why do we have so many foreign players.  Even before Ton came who apparently has a history of getting foreign players we still had plenty.  As mentioned, we have 6 (more than anyone in the league)< I would be willing to bet we are in the top 5% of teams with foreign player son the roster.

Again not opposed to the foreign talent by any means, as I hope we bring in good kids that can elevate the program, win and graduate.  But I am just curious as to the recruiting strategy and why we seem to be landing more kids from abroad vs here in the states (not just NYC metro area).  I know it is early but do we have the right personnel to recruit A-10 talent.

See #3 below. There is not much more to it.

Well, a few things, just to engender discussion:

1. Fordham historically did a lot of recruiting out of NYC area high schools, and it seems that the talent levels there have dropped, for demographic and other reasons. Even Tom Pecora, who'd made his bones on recruiting the City and environs, found himself going outside the immediate area for recruits (Rochester, Boston, Montreal, to name a few destinations). And, for the talent remaining in NYC area high schools, the pool is being extensively fished.

2. A lot of the elite players get siphoned off into prep schools (a goodly number of them in New Jersey) where we haven't historically had much clout (despite having some alumni in these schools' coaching ranks).

3. We are disfavored by academic pressures, recent low success levels, and (dare I say) facilities issues.  These are well known among area players, and are used by a lot of rival coaches as "oppo".

4. Our current head coach and his assistants did not have a profile of recruiting the area in the years before coming to Rose Hill. Mike DePaoli is young. We might be suffering a "fish out of water" phenomenon, to some extent.

5. Factors 1 through 4 are greatly diminished, if not eliminated altogether, when we go after foreign recruits.

#3 is huge!

I would be awfully curious to hear what Tom Pecora would say now about his experience recruiting at Fordham. He came in very confident, but for the most part the recruiting left a bit to be desired aside from some exceptions which were big recruiting coups irrespective of whether they panned out or not.
6  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Recruiting Update on: July 15, 2017, 03:28:48 pm
How scary is it that "a few years" is now... 16 years ago? Unbelievable. Was it his junior or senior year that he emerged as a solid shooter off the bench? He was 6'7, Pekarek a bit more stretch at 6'10, but I see the comp.

He only played 3 years. They lobbied for a 4the year but were denied. Something about some league he played in in Belarus which was considered semi-pro, so it cost him a year.
7  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Athletic Department Topics / Re: BUS on: July 14, 2017, 11:48:51 am
I saw a Monmouth U bus as well. Very impressive.  Perhaps these buses can be leased?  Good PR/exposure for the school, and very cool for the athletes as well......evokes pride and prestige.

I am 99% sure they are leased in most cases.
8  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Recruiting Update on: July 14, 2017, 11:41:29 am
no disrespect tot he foreign players and they can be welcome additions to the program, but if we cannot land solid players from the the states that is very concerning.  I have and continue to have confidence in JN's coaching ability but we need to recruit better to take the program tot he next level.

I wonder if fans at St. Mary's feel the same way about the foreign players. I agree with you that overall recruiting has to get better, but it does not matter where they come from.

Additionally, Evans is from the US, he was signed this off-season. One of our transfers is from the US. Last season we signed Ohams and Hicks from the US.
9  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Athletic Department Topics / Re: BUS on: July 14, 2017, 10:22:33 am
I've thought the same thing that it would be a good rolling advertisement.

I didn't consider the vandalism aspect, good point 85.  However, per Chaka buses are very expensive to buy and maintain, and Fordham is really stretched on budget.

There are also the legal and PR implications that come with owning the bus and hiring the driver, should there ever be any sort of accident.  BTW, finding a good reliable driver with a CDL license and clean driving record (important in case there is an accident and lawsuit) is no small feat given the competition for those folks.

I doubt most of these schools own the buses. I also doubt it is their own driver, though they might get the same ones based on contract with the bus company.
10  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Ivan Raut signs with Fordham on: July 12, 2017, 12:52:16 am
As I mentioned in a prior post, the best case scenario is that this e.eur/balkan run leads to team unity/chemistry intangible...although that may also hurt a 'team' dynamic and cause an internal split. We've seen that before here. IMO, this just smells a lot like Luka Zivkovic, but I'll reserve judgement.

Chartouny, Havsa, Hicks, Evans, Chuba, Slanina is a competitive six.

In regards to the Rothstein prediction thread, F it. Last, second to last, third to last, it's all the same. Squabbling over defining what a 'bad' season is a waste of time. The A10 looks very strong on paper, go win 16 games if you want to make a statement. Otherwise, the Fordham basement forecasts are fair. The desire to "beat" the forecast by a couple seeds is loser talk. Expect to win. Go win.

Zivkovic played high school basketball in Indiana. There was a good bit of info on him. I know nothing about Raut, but then again I knew nothing of Sengfelder either.
11  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Players I think we should look into. The Recruiting Speculation Game on: July 11, 2017, 02:43:48 pm
I am at fault also, but let's not muddle this thread with talk about the NCAA.
12  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Players I think we should look into. The Recruiting Speculation Game on: July 11, 2017, 10:12:16 am
does anyone have some inside scoop about some possible new players coming on to the roster.  It is getting late and time is ticking.
Sadly have to agree with Rothstein's prediction, as thus far we lost some good players and the replacement value is not there.  Hopefully a nice surprise or two is waiting in the wings and will surface soon.
I like JN as a coach but he needs to find and bring in the horses.

I am not sure I agree that the replacement value is not there. Tre Evans and Perris Hicks replace Antwoine Anderson and Javontae Hawkins. Sengfelder's replacement might be on the roster also. To me the recruiting is a concern for future years more than for this coming season.
13  The Fordham Forums / All Other Fordham Rams' Sports / Re: WBB Coaching Changes on: July 10, 2017, 10:44:03 pm
Exactly. They can be at individual or group workouts, but not at regular practices.
14  The Fordham Forums / All Other Fordham Rams' Sports / Re: WBB Coaching Changes on: July 10, 2017, 10:39:42 pm
I am fairly sure that only the head coach and assistant coaches can be at practice. Director of Player Development cannot be at practice.
15  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Players I think we should look into. The Recruiting Speculation Game on: July 10, 2017, 05:26:54 pm
I'd argue that there is a clear distinction between a walk-on and a player who was on formerly on scholarship. I don't think the tampering fear comes into play at all in this situation.

I just used the walk-on as an example of how the rule forcing a player to sit out a year is far reaching. Tampering is just mentioned as one of the main reasons as to why the sit-out year is in place.
16  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Players I think we should look into. The Recruiting Speculation Game on: July 10, 2017, 03:48:48 pm
Perhaps all it will take is an appeal to set the precedent. I'd like to hear the NCAAs argument in favor of forcing a kid to sit a year after having his scholarship revoked.

Fairly sure a walk-on who transfers has to sit. It is meant to protect programs from getting their players tampered with, but clearly it is being abused the other way too.
17  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Players I think we should look into. The Recruiting Speculation Game on: July 10, 2017, 01:58:07 pm
Tough situation for the kid.  Are you eligible immediately if the school decides to not renew your scholarship?  Damari was forced to transfer, doesn't seem fair he would need to sit out a year as well.

http://www.bgdailynews.com/sports/wku/hilltopper-guard-parris-won-t-return-for-sophomore-season/article_6b033195-814e-5ced-80d1-45a28f3d878a.html

It is not fair, but he does indeed have to sit. He should appeal to the NCAA if for no other reason than to make a point.
18  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Rothstein's A-10 Offseason Notebook on: July 10, 2017, 11:24:37 am
Yeah, well, lose 3 starters, recruit no replacements, then your entire recruiting haul consists of two kids who slumped in their sophomore seasons in the MAAC and at the bottom of the Big East, and who won't be available until the 2018-19 season -- yeah, hard to generate much preseason excitement with that.

You are forgetting Tre Evans.
19  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Kicker Andrew Mevis - Freshman Season on: July 08, 2017, 03:31:37 pm
So awesome.  We've had the pleasure of watching some great kickers here over the past few years.  It's such an important weapon.  I didn't open the link.  Does he punt too?

Part of me has been wondering if Medlock could pint because he punted in high school where he,  according to his bio, "Earned Class 8A-7A Second-Team All-State honors as a punter in 2012."

That said, the article says, "Behind his strong leg, Mevis also put almost all his kickoff attempts into the endzone and also has been stellar with directional punting."
20  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: DePaul transfer Erten Gazi has committed to Fordham, per a source. on: June 29, 2017, 10:54:09 am
I still believe a good coach can only get so much out of his talent. Look at last year, considering everything including some injuries, JN probably coached better than the PY when he had more wins with better talent/depth. This year he probably will coach his butt off again but I am not sure we have replaced the talent we lost specifically the 3 starters. We will see and it should be interesting but getting in a Gaston, Dunston type recruit would definitely make it more exciting given the fact that JN has showed he can coach.

How many here were excited when Dunston was signed? Most were talking about Michael Binns or Sebastian Greene. Similarly, nobody was talking about Marcus Stout. (ok, maybe "nobody" is a bit extreme)
21  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: DePaul transfer Erten Gazi has committed to Fordham, per a source. on: June 28, 2017, 05:02:50 pm
Agree that 2 years of scholarship for 1 year of competition is risky in principle, but don't most transfer students usually have trouble getting all their previous credits to count at their new school? Are there many instances where that transfer > sit > play > grad-transfer has happened?

In general or at Fordham? We have had very few transfers, so I assume you are asking in general. A bulk of the grad-transfers are guys who transferred into a school, sat, played a year or two, graduate and transferred out. Without having hard numbers, I think those are a majority and a greater number than those that graduate in 3 years.
22  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: DePaul transfer Erten Gazi has committed to Fordham, per a source. on: June 28, 2017, 03:41:20 pm
For 20+ years we have struggled to land quality (good and immediately qualified) talent and keep it. Some keep blaming the coach and others get angry if we talk about the elephant in the room.
23  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: A10 Incoming/Outgoing List 2017-18 on: June 28, 2017, 11:44:11 am
We have probably hit our limit on transfers who need to sit a year.  He was the star of a pretty good Cardozo team but had a bit of a numbers crunch ahead of him with the Bonnies.  I wonder if that means we see more potential in Gazi?  Or maybe we didn't know he'd be available, or if he'd have any interest. He didn't do much this year anyway.

From what I understand, a transfer within the A10 has to sit two years. That is part of the reason why I have zero interest in this thread; we cannot land one of these transfers out. The transfers in I read about on the A10 board. I understand others don't read the A10 board, so this thread does serve a good purpose that way.
24  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: DePaul transfer Erten Gazi has committed to Fordham, per a source. on: June 28, 2017, 09:54:10 am
There's absolutely nothing to be excited about for this upcoming season. On paper, this looks like a wasted season.

That's the right attitude. It increases the chances of being pleasantly surprised.
25  The Fordham Forums / All Other Fordham Rams' Sports / Re: Fordham's Nick Martinez on: June 25, 2017, 09:41:07 pm
Nick did well thru 4, no runs. Gave up 4 in the fifth, but first finished inning and left ahead 7-4. Mixed emotions  big Yankee fan but rooting for Nick

I was hoping he would end up with a no decision.

I think there was a touch of sarcasm here, no?

Fair enough, but he could not be drafted.

I continue to be impressed with this Fordham man!

He went to the wrong high school in Miami, but other than that I agree!

Four stars and no offers from Power 5 schools?  Something is missing here.

Perhaps it's the 5'10". You don't see many 5'10" guys at power 5 schools. He is probably less than that given how heights get inflated. They also have time to offer him if they get more desperate.
29  The Fordham Forums / All Other Fordham Rams' Sports / Re: EBB Lose Kelly? on: June 18, 2017, 08:17:24 pm
Orlando is a terrible place to anything. Middle of a very hot state, far from water. Basically living in a swamp, but a swamp works for the university of Florida, so what do I know.
30  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Should Fordham Deny Releases for Transfers? on: June 14, 2017, 02:19:41 pm
I got sucked into the debate too, but this is not a big conference vs. smaller conference issue. Bilas' story dealt with a player from Pittsburgh (ACC) transferring to UNC (ACC). He also mentioned  a situation at Kansas State (Big 12).
