1  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: Softball Assistant Coach Leaving on: June 22, 2017, 07:17:04 pm
Scott, most immediately would be 2, for next year's seniors, Shaw (IF and power hitter) and Figueroa (OF and slapper).  Yes, scholarship or partial.  Softball gets to split scholarships up.  I think unless one goes through coaches, the player has to initiate contact with the coach prior to the end of their Junior year.  One often sees the best Texas players verbally committing as Sophomores.  Makes it tough for Bridget unless she sees them in one of the 3 tournaments she goes to in the summer.

Odd coincidence in coaching announcements.  Former Ram Kayla Lombardo just announced she's going to be an assistant at Lehigh, then, within days, Reese Mariconda announces she's going to GT.  Wonder if Lombardo was considered for Mariconda's job.  Both were infielders.  Would love to steal Jen Mineau from St. Joe's as pitching coach and move Gabby Leuty over to the other assistant.

That sounds like a great idea, both could work from their strengths.  It would also be great if Jen could find a pitcher or two at her talent level Wink

Joe,

Congratulations to the team, the coaches and you.

I recall you mentioning many times that when you and your former teammates restarted the team that you had a 10-15 year plan.  I am going to say that even you could not have imagined how successful your efforts would be and that I think you exceeded the heights you were striving for.

Sailing has become one of Fordham's most successful programs and we are proud of you and the team
3  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Sailing / Re: COLLEGE SAILING'S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND - FORDHAM QUALIFIED! on: June 02, 2017, 01:00:41 pm
Good luck to the team and Joe this is an amazing story

We definitely need another big in this system.
Agreed, I just hope we hear something soon for my own selfish reasons

Glad to see he continues to do well

Good luck!

If we could steal a win over EWU that would really be a season changing type victory
7  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: All time best Fordham Starting five on: May 26, 2017, 11:06:14 am
I would pick both Haynes and Herzog over Green
8  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: MANNY SUAREZ 44 on: May 24, 2017, 12:50:23 pm
I wish Manny luck at Creighton and I am happy for his success

I do have to wonder how long we will be talking about his departure two years ago, he seems to have moved on, why can't we?

The reasons why he left are in the past and certainly cannot be changed, why bother rehashing them?

9  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Recruiting Update on: May 22, 2017, 11:50:50 am
Yes that actually is interesting. A new recruiting tool, I think we started this trend at Fu and now others may be following suit?  Changes the value of a scholarship.

No wait till someone tells you it is in the wrong thread.

I think you are right, it could be a new recruiting tool.

The game has changed and every coach needs to figure out how to turn the new reality into an advantage.

Remember when Calipari and other smart coaches figured out how to make one & done's work for them?  Now even Coach K will take those players

Iona had a nice run a few years back by being one of the first to figure out how to make  saving scholarships for transfers from higher conferences work for them and then pitching themselves as a place to transfer down to in order to get a shot at the NCAA's, now other schools do the same.

You could have coaches telling players at a higher or a borderline level that playing for them for a year will allow them to transfer to a better program

And as the Post says they could pitch the graduate in three years and move on as another tool, a little tricker since it it s harder work for a student

The point is that all those strategies appeal to a player's desire to eventually get to a higher level

I am sure that the most creative coaches will find a way to make this work for them, after all they want to get to a higher as well

10  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Recruiting Update on: May 19, 2017, 04:22:16 pm
Jake Fay is a graduate transfer at Hartford. I think we should sign him just so we can get 85's reaction posts.

I had forgotten about him and when you posted this I was curious about his career at Hartford,

........without going into a lot of detail it looks like he was injured a lot and never scored a point for them during his career.  I don't mean to be critical of him but you really have to wonder what Pecora saw in him that he locked him up by taking his brother too

Well, ancient history and good luck to him
11  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Disappointed ! on: May 19, 2017, 11:22:17 am
I am withholding judgment until we know that recruiting for next season has finished

The recruiting game has changed, international players, the rise of transfers, the focus on ,ore national instead of local recruiting, completely different ballgame from even five years ago and every coach has to adjust

I do think that JN talking about his recruiting philosophy would help us understand better what he hopes to accomplish and I wouldn't mind a leak or two beyond a Twitter post that " Good news is coming". Could be something as simple as a background conversation that indicates we are recruiting Euro post players or something similar, that would help some fans step back from the ledge
12  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Recruiting Update on: May 17, 2017, 05:29:43 pm
The assumption here was that because of social media we'd learn early in the signing period of FU signees.  We're at the end of the signing period and haven't heard much.

Yes, but there are two parts to this, the players and the coaches.

We did not hear much about or from  Portley & Evans before their commitments.  You can't do much to control what a potential recruit or their friends say but Coaches can stick to the rules.  I understand that a coach is not permitted to comment on a recruit until a NLI is signed but some will speak off the record to a reporter or blogger.  I think Pecora and his staff were prolific off the record sources, clearly JN and his staff operate differently

Considering all the time we spent talking about the rumors that came out of Pecora's staff I kind of like JN's approach, of course I would like more info but nothing I can do about that
13  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Recruiting Update on: May 17, 2017, 03:45:02 pm
May have been that way all along.  We will have to wait and see.

I think so, as others have mentioned, you don't hire Ali Ton unless you want him to bring in players from overseas, it wasn't like we were going to have him recruit Iowa HS players for us

For all we know JN & AT might have tied up a couple of Intl players a month ago
14  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Memorial Field stadium on: May 16, 2017, 05:21:30 pm
Just crazy the way an unbuilt/unfunded stadium project keeps increasing in size, by the time this thread runs its course some posters will be writing that we missed the chance to play in a 50,000 seat with gold plated seats Roll Eyes
15  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Memorial Field stadium on: May 16, 2017, 11:34:30 am
So, improving JCF and potentially taking advantage of a 25k facility (if built) are mutually exclusive? Not logical.

Stop, the project as announced has a seating capacity of 15K, not 25K

http://www.lohud.com/story/news/local/westchester/mount-vernon/2017/05/05/memorial-field-plan-mount-vernon-ny/101304672/

Where did the extra 10K seats come from?

The project is unlikely to be built as announced, adding an extra 10K seats makes it even more unlikely
16  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Recruiting Update on: May 15, 2017, 12:28:30 pm
Slanina still hasn't shown he's not foul prone enough to play more than 20 mins a game.  He only passed the 25 minute mark 3 times last year.  That being said, I like Bunting, and think he and Slanina can make a solid tandem.  Ohams played well against VCU, but I think he has more upside as a 3, and he's giving up 30-50 lbs playing against most 4's in the A10.  I don't think he can play 35 mins a game at the 4.  Even if he can, what happens if someone gets hurt, which seems to be the case with this team every year?  Bottom line, we need a big who can step in and play some serious minutes.

I agree, we need a big to play minutes at the 4/5 especially when you take into account Slania's foul problems

The open spots should ideally go to a big and a wing
17  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Memorial Field stadium on: May 15, 2017, 11:43:20 am
Crazy to think of this as an option for us

The field has been closed since 2009, the city does not seem to be able to get its act together and the site has been floated as an option for NYCFC and quickly shot down as too small (15K) seats.  If NYCFC with money from the Yankees and the even richer Manchester City does not want to sink money into what would is now a almost a sinkhole then how would Fordham move this forward?

If this was a viable plan then sure take a look, but they have been floating proposals for a number of proposal for years and have gotten nowhere, it does not seem worth out time to get involved at this point

Hard to believe Mt. Vernon will ever build anything worth our taking a look at or for that matter anything at all

Tx,

Thanks for.leeping us plugged into the game

Much appreciated
19  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Softball / Re: A10 Softball Playoffs Starting Wed 3/10 on: May 14, 2017, 05:51:49 pm
Congratulations to the players and the coaches

Some injuries took them off track this season but they overcome them and won another A10 championship

Let's hope they get a favorable draw for the tournament
20  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Why the RHG is to be Named for McGlaughlin on: May 12, 2017, 11:09:10 am
Cool
Not me.  Frank is a honorable man who was executing policy, not making it.

Feel free to admire Frank for being a loyal soldier and a good man, however after decades of declining athletic performance and no meaningful advancement in facilities it is clear that even Frank should have questioned if AD was a job he was good at, the rest of us sure did

Making excuses and accepting the status quo is what has gotten us into this mess

There is no need to immortalize failure by naming the court after Frank
21  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Why the RHG is to be Named for McGlaughlin on: May 11, 2017, 11:37:27 am
Gents in my discussion with a member of Fordham U regarding the decision to remove Chic Fil A from campus which I find totally disheartening since we ARE a Jesuit University and should be supportive of Christian values, but I am off topic.

The Alumni who donated all the money to refurbish the gym are close friends of Frank M and did did it on the condition   that the gym be renamed for Frank. I would have told them to keep their money.  I also told this individual he should read this forum to see that there are many Alumni who are extremely unhappy with the direction the University has taken regarding sports. He was very understanding.  I truly believe until we get new leadership that understands the symbiotic relationship between sports and academics we will never get near to becoming "The preeminent Catholic University" in the country.

I would love to hear what they think after reading this forum, reality can be a sobering experience

For the small sum offered and the piddling improvements provided it would have been better for the University to have said no thanks
22  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Recruiting Update on: May 11, 2017, 11:18:46 am
Can we handle taking on two players that need to sit a year? I'm not opposed to it necessarily, but I would think we need 2 more bodies to help the rotation THIS YEAR.. unless JN thinks Pekarek has the ability to do that.

This is a very good question and I had the same thought

I realize that no team uses all 13 scholarship players in the rotation

We had one unused scholarship last year and injuries hit us hard to the point where we used more of our roster than most teams

Is intentionally going into the next season with two players who have the sit out a year the right move for the upcoming season?

I have my doubts but it is the coach's decision

Good luck Manny
24  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Tre Evans Commits to Fordham on: May 09, 2017, 12:23:27 pm
Some more great info on Tre and the story keeps getting better and better

Tre sounds like he has the making of a solid player for us and possibly/hopefully a difference maker

What is really encouraging is his shooting percentage, sure the A10 is tougher than what he faced in JUCO but we have not had a player with his shooting ability in a while and with him and Hicks we might actually become the gang that could shoot straight.   We were not terrible last year but we sure were not elite, this could be exciting to watch next year

Great job by JN and the staff

Can't wait to see who we sign next
25  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Tre Evans Commits to Fordham on: May 08, 2017, 09:55:36 am
Not you that is why I put a space after my statement on getting a front court player.

Should have been clearer it is for the clucking hens who who whine about facilities and frank when players go elsewhere.  Every school has guys that choose to go elsewhere not a big deal at least not a big deal every where else in the nation.

OK,  I note that in keeping with JN's under the radar approach both recruits to date had not been talked about a great deal here, yet they are signed.

They are also both domestic players and not from overseas, showing that the fear some had that we would "never" sign another domestic player were just not true.  I think Myles Johnson would be a good signing but Hawaii is tough competition for us

Personally I don't care where the players come from as long as they are of A10 caliber and contribute
26  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Tre Evans Commits to Fordham on: May 08, 2017, 09:38:53 am
I am confident we will add a front court player.

Recruiting takes time there are always more guys who go elsewhere than accept the offer that is why you put out more offers than spots.  Have some patience let these guys do their job.

Rich,

I agree but why do you think I am showing impatience? Huh?
27  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Tre Evans Commits to Fordham on: May 07, 2017, 08:39:16 pm
Very excited to have real recruiting news and to land a player who could well be a difference maker for us.

Two players signed, two more to come, hope at least one is a big man

28  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Recruiting Update on: May 02, 2017, 10:49:02 am
Are we still making a push for Myles Johnson?
29  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Jihaad Pretlow Signs with 49ers on: April 30, 2017, 12:42:38 pm
What a great video

Congratulations and good luck!

Alston is eligible immediately and has two years of eligibility left.  Graduated in three years and sat one year with knee injury.

Nice, Alston could be a good addition for us next year
