Didn't Anderson get suspended last year?   Really good player but seems like he's a ball-breaker...

2  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Patriot league is now the worst fcs conf in the country on: Yesterday at 12:36:54 pm
Not doubting you, but that is very hard to believe. How could you ever sign anyone? Who is going to spend $70K a year after being recruited at the D1 level ?  If the aid packages are as suggest by AOC, then it's nowhere near the disparity that is implied.

I don't know how they distribute aid and what they cap thei roster at but $2.5 mil divided be 60 players averages $33k per player.  At $70k cost, I'd think that's in the ball park for the average student at Gtown.

I think it's hard to throw out all these names without knowing the athletic aspirations of these schools.

Not happening.  Ever. There is no upside in these historic small college programs moving to D-I.  They 100% buy into the small college athletics philosophy. They live in a different athletic universe.

I have a serious question here. If Georgetown cost $70K a year and you have 60 full scholarships, how could your budget only be $1.8M?

It's an accounting policy. Georgetown keeps the financial aid outside the football budget.  Years ago Fordham passed football financial aid through the program first and counted it as income.  I heard a couple of years ago that Georgetowns financial aid for football was about $2.5 mil.

no one here was AB to go more than me; it's because he's awful.  I mean just an awful coach with horrible people skills.

No one is getting rid of him durum the year.  For what -- we will have a loosing record even if we win out the year.  Nothing to gain.

We need to ride out the storm.  It's going to be demoralizing but it's inevitable.

Fred,  how do you have all of this intimate knowledge of the team, coach and situation?

Remember Leon Stephenson?

The problem is those things can go away if you win 8 games. but once you start losing......they tend to resurface...and it can snowball on you as a coach.....for lack of a better example, you get Harvey Weinsteined......all of a sudden every player who ever had a minor beef or altercation with the coach suddenly comes out of woodwork and there is a post here, a post on facebook, and instagram, a new poster pops up on here and it can really go downhill quickly.....not easy these days.....we didnt see or hear any of this stuff last year.....not a word......now we are 1-6 and these things pop up every week......thank god im not coaching anymore...i see it at rink every day, even the elite Jr. A team, parents hovering after practice, ah coach...can i have a word? you dont oblige....then lose a few games in a row, the mudslinging starts on social media...

I was a head coach at a high school for 3 years.  I had more rules for parents than I did for players.  Among them were:

No parents at practice.

No talking about another player with a parent.

When I spoke with a parent, their son had to be present.  Prevented a lot of, "coach said".

I agree 100% with you but I don't think that is the issue here.   As a coach, you still have to run the program and you can't let a malcontent take or poison the locker room. Odom was an average player trapped inside a very impressive body.  The notice he recieved was because of his outstanding physical appearance, not for anything he did on the field.  He was given many chances.  I don't have a problem with how AB handled him last year.  I think Moorhead would have handled him the same way.   AB must have done a decent job, he managed to win 8 games.
9  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Another Hit to the Defense? on: October 18, 2017, 07:35:22 pm
You are also being immature like AB. The kid got injured right before the last preseason game and requires surgery. You only hear from the coaches. You have no interest nor have you ever heard anything from any of the players. So how do you really know anything if you only know one side of the story?

If you're injured, don't play.. no issue there.  If you play, no excuses.

Injuries had nothing to do with dropped passes and little interest in blocking.

Carnegie Mellon with the $1.7 BILLION endowment?

It's not raining.  They really were peeing on your leg.
11  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Division III on: October 18, 2017, 05:08:37 pm
The PL discussions about adding one or two current D-III programs and upgrading to full D-I are occurring. There are apparently 2-4 which have been targeted. The issue is cost for D-III and the PL is contemplating a bit of an interim subsidy for a taker or two. This is all that I'm aware of for the moment.

This is pure b.s.   A great D-III program might be paying slightly over $1mil to find their program. They're going to pump an additional $5 mil into their program to play Bucknell and Georgetown.  And the PL would subsidize this?

Where did you get this information?
12  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Another Hit to the Defense? on: October 18, 2017, 01:44:12 pm
Attack on Odom last year? Iíve spoken to his mother during games and his play vanished not because of his play, but because of a back and forth between him and AB once Odom felt that he started to be personally attacked after constant heat from AB that wasnít being equally shown towards other players.

Poor baby.  The coach yelled at hims so it effected his play.  Did Mike Tomlin yell at him too?  Is that why the Steelers cut him?  Do these guys ever look at their own performance?
13  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Division III on: October 18, 2017, 01:39:56 pm
when evaluating possible candidates, I'm pretty sure that any invitation would be up the full-time members and not associate members like us.  I don't see many schools on people's lists that would either be interested in the PL or that would get the PL's attention even for associate membership.

Actually< I think the PL would happily accept associate members for football if they could find them.  No school is leaving the CAA unless they are downgrading football.  I can't imagine any reason in the world why W&M would even have the conversation.

I agree some Pioneer League teams could match but do they want to add millions to their football budget to cover scholarships?  Not likely... Possibly one or teams from the NEC would consider an invite.  Do they match up, though?   How do they deal with the AI?

14  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Division III on: October 18, 2017, 12:10:34 pm
what did you not understand when he wrote this???

 Huh?

I don't understand why he'd throw this crap against the wall.  Now we're suspending reality to post?
15  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Division III on: October 18, 2017, 11:52:49 am
Please re-read my post, but yes.

Any reason at all to believe this has been entertained?
16  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Division III on: October 18, 2017, 11:19:01 am
The annual or semi-annual "which is the next school to join the PL" topic seems to have raised its head here first.  Acknowledging that there aren't any great or realistic candidates that also WANT to join the PL, this has been a topic that has gone down many rabbit holes.

If we ignore the chorus for the usual suspects of Villanova, Richmond and W&M, Army would be a terrific candidate:  high academics, good standards, similar size, ideal location, etc.  Of course, they aren't dropping from FBS without Navy and Navy isn't dropping.  So there goes my #1 option.  If we suspended the reality of the NCAA requirements for DIII schools to move right to DI, Hopkins is a good start.  I'd also make the argument that RPI is as good or a better candidate.  Private, similar sized, good academics, top notch facilities and gives the northern end of schools (HC and Colgate specifically) an attractive close-in rival.  I don't know that they would move without their rival Union (114 gridiron meetings), so maybe that is a package deal.

You understand that their athletic departments would have to become full fledged D-I members, right?  Do you really see that happening?
17  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Division III on: October 18, 2017, 06:05:15 am
As most of the PL coaches have been complaining about scheduling opponents, travel, budgets, and injuries, the PL is apparently thinking extending offers to several DIII programs to join the PL - preferably for ALL sported. Who, how or when is a mystery.

Sounds quite a lot different than the direction of Villanova, W&M, and Richmond.

They would have to join D-I across their entire athletic departments.  I can't imagine that being a remote possibility.
18  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Another Hit to the Defense? on: October 17, 2017, 06:44:18 pm
Roberts was on the way out last year.  He wanted to transfer badly.  Why he didn't is unknown especially that he had a bad relationship with his Holiness AB

Clearly his stock went down this year; it was by no means the season he had last year.

If he is so unhappy he should wait until the week after the season and take the appropriate steps to transfer ASAP.
19  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Another Hit to the Defense? on: October 17, 2017, 11:27:56 am
We lost to Lafayette by the thinnest of margins.  So, while I agree that moving Roberts back to a position where he has a bigger impact may still keep us rated as an overall awful defense it could have very easily been enough for us to have won that game.  Same goes for the Bryant game.

Winning Lafayette, or both Lafayette and Bryant, and AB's odds of returning go up considerably.  Losing both and I think his fate is sealed

Undersized defensive linemen are seldom game deciders.  Best players need to be at linebacker. It is the position you can least afford to be undermanned at.
20  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Another Hit to the Defense? on: October 17, 2017, 09:54:33 am
Whan any coach puts together a defense, linebackers come first.  I saw him play last year. He was fine.  He's listed at 220 this year so how much. Liking up did he do?  Roberts at DE doesn't help a shaky defense. Roberts' at LB is the best player available.
21  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Should Coach Breiner be on the "Hot Seat" on: October 17, 2017, 09:32:02 am

I didn't insinuate that.  I believe the club was a factor -- one of several.  Moorhead was probably more infuential and part of his influence may have been to get the GC's support behind the hire.  I don't get the sense that this was quite as influential as Dave Clawson's support for Foley but I stand by what I wrote earlier -- (paraphrasing) that posters are kidding themselves if they think that they would have stood up to a popular and influential coach, the booster club and significant support from players.  Those are tough constituencies to overcome.  We can all wish that the administration would be stronger in the face of those pressures.  I think some posters dismiss them too easily.

The only thing I should have corrected is implying that all the players were behind AB.  Instead of writing "the players", which suggested all the players, I should have written "many".

If the booster club and a coach going out the door had as much influence as you say we are in major trouble.  The GC does a nice job but I don't see how they have the juice to move the needle much.  Our football office remains on the drawing board because the money is very slow coming in.   Any AD that looks to players for significant input on these hires is a guy abdicating his responsibility.  I don't believe Roach did that.  The idea of AB getting the job was ok'd from above and if Roach had input otherwise, it was ignored.  He is a team player and does what his bosses want.
22  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Another Hit to the Defense? on: October 17, 2017, 09:18:38 am
Yes, that is the policy, as far as I know, and likely why the review panel decided to let him keep the scholarship. Keep in mind though that you get to keep your scholarship if you are holding your end of the bargain, it is not automatic. Obviously Coach Breiner did not think that the kid was keeping his end of the bargain.

Gavin Grewal is a sophomore now. He is an OL who did not see action as a freshman.

So we may have to carry this scholarship for two more years?  Wonderful.
23  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Another Hit to the Defense? on: October 17, 2017, 09:17:05 am
I don't read any of these posts as providing intimate knowledge of what happened either way.  It just reads to me as though people are ready to jump on AB for it even though they don't know exactly what happened and how bad it was (whatever Roberts did).  Likewise, some automatically defend the coach in this situation without knowing how Roberts brought the issue up, which could have been an overreaction from an insecure coach.  Regardless, what this comes off as to me is another unfortunate data point that the program is in a death spiral.

One thing that really gnaws at me, though, is hearing that Roberts wanted to stay at DE, if that's true.  Maybe it's because I pointed it out so early in this season after seeing how poor our LB and DL play was.  The kid was an absolute beast last year as a true frosh even though he was undersized.  It was clear very early on that he was not having an impact at LB.  I assumed that he must have been a terror at LB in HS and also been really pushing for the move himself for them to force the move.  Figured it was a matter of time before he got comfortable there and things took off.  That obviously never happened and we clearly would have been better off with him helping lead the DL and having whoever the backup LB was take over things there.  I usually just defer to the coaches who see them practice and play every day but I'm baffled as to why AB would force this.  Worse LB play, worse DL play and it sounds like a damaged relationship with a stud player to boot.

Linebackers are the center of the defense.  He is probably trying to get impact players there.

I think "absolute beast" is a bit of an statement.  6'1"' 220 lbs is small.  That's slightly below average for a high school DE today.  To ask him to hold up against 300 lb tackles an 230 lb tight ends and pulling guards isn't realistic.   If he can't/ doesn't want to play LB, I don't know where he plays.   And I don't want to hear about last season.  The defense was patchwork.  I don't know the details but if he went to AB to talk about it, he was obviously turned down. He must have really pushed the issue and become disruptive.  If he doesn't like it quit and turn back your scholarship.  The last think his teammates need is to be a man down, not to mention the distraction.  Poor form by a guy old enough to know better.

24  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Another Hit to the Defense? on: October 17, 2017, 09:03:47 am
Some poster said that Breiner had a disagreement with a player, wanted him off the team and off scholarship and it was sent to a review panel. The panel sided with the player in that he was able to keep his scholarship, but is no longer on the team.

Here:

Geeez. Not good.  Isn't it Fordhams policy now that athletic scholarships are for 4 years?  Please tell me this guy was a senior.
25  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Another Hit to the Defense? on: October 17, 2017, 07:03:27 am
Is this the kid who the administration sided with over AB in a dispute?

Dispute with a player that went to the administration?  What was that about?
26  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Another Hit to the Defense? on: October 17, 2017, 01:50:21 am
ugh..   and the 'hits' keep coming.    Generally, I would side with the HC as you cannot please everybody and not every player will be happy with the time they do get on the field.  However, as a freshman Roberts was a beast at DE.  He may have a point of wanting to play DE  and quite frankly may not be as effective a read and react LB.  This is getting worse every week.  As another poster stated.. Tell Max hang on another month we may have a new coach.

Maybe Max should shut up and make a tackle.
27  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Should Coach Breiner be on the "Hot Seat" on: October 16, 2017, 11:02:07 am
the donor base was split re: Pecora.  Yes, some big donors wanted to keep TP.  Others wanted him out.  Different circumstances than with the AB hire.  IMO, the Gridiron Club holds a lot more away over the football program than the Rebounders Club and hoops donors do over the basketball program.

Exactly who are the " big donors".  I look in the annual report. I'm not seeing much at the $100k level.  Donors should have zero influence in these matters. They don't have enough skin in the game to have a say.  There have been a handful of people over the years who stepped up with checks over the years.  As far as I know they've been classy supporters who haven't interfered.
28  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Should Coach Breiner be on the "Hot Seat" on: October 16, 2017, 10:55:32 am
not necessarily.  Dave Clawson did not have HC experience.

I think the lesson that needs to be learned is for the Gridiron Club to show some restraint in the matter.  They do great work but they have not helped in these searches.  If they can limit their input then I think the players' pressure becomes less of an influence.

You're barking up the wrong tree.  The GC had limited influence on this. This was JM going to high up in the administration..
29  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Should Coach Breiner be on the "Hot Seat" on: October 15, 2017, 08:29:19 pm
I have read the Football posts all season and have been entertained, amused, annoyed and bemused. As an ex D1 college player and parent of a D1 player, I am disappointed with the direction of the team under AB. I think it is a combination of things that have contributed to the poor performance this year but I donít blame the players. Having 9 out of 14 coaches on staff join in 2016-2017 is a huge problem and those coaches have very little to no connection with the players. Offense AND Defensive play calling has been interesting to say the least. Execution in all three facets of the game has been problematic: special teams, defense and offense all need to be in step to have success. Playing kids out of position and injured doesnít help. I agree that AB is in over his head but does he not recognize his limitations and challenges? Does he not have someone who can help him and guide him when he struggles?

He has a young staff, noticeably absent of a couple of grey beards that could serve as senior counsellors. I believe that was out of design.
30  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Should Coach Breiner be on the "Hot Seat" on: October 15, 2017, 12:56:44 pm
Maybe Bailey could get Joe Moorhead's recommendation; he was Joe's center when they were both on the Ram Football team under Coach Nick Quartaro. And don't forget that his Assumption team beat Fordham at Coffey Field in 2010.  Evil

Great guy, solid coach.

Not what we need, IMO.
