1  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Why the RHG is to be Named for McGlaughlin on: Yesterday at 07:49:36 pm
Yes, of course I do understood and have always understood that.  As I'm sure you know those questions are relevant whether it's Fordham considering Trump as part of a target list of potential donors, or vice versa.

FWIW, as to something like this virtually never happening, Trump is so impulsive I do think he's the kind of guy who would do such a thing.  The guy delights in being different, breaking norms, and being so "unprecedented".  Why would he consider making a sudden announcement of a donation?  He might suddenly feel the need to buy his way to a good reputation, to create yet another distraction, or to compromise a critic.  He would understand that going public first with a potential donation would put a lot of pressure on the administration which would work to his advantage in the negotiations which follow, and he could always just say if rejected that he actually withdrew the offer first and blame the administration.  It would actually be perfectly in character for him.

After almost 50 years, it's highly unlikely that any alum who has never made a significant gift to Fordham is on anyone's prospect list.
2  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Why the RHG is to be Named for McGlaughlin on: Yesterday at 09:56:22 am
I was directly responding to Charlietag's and Xtey's political commentary that the reason Fordham might reject a gift from Trump is out of "political correctness" (as if that were the only reason a school might reject a gift).  There are a lot of practical and serious questions that any school's administration is going to ask in regards to accepting a gift from any major donor, especially one who is so incredibly "controversial" (to put it mildly).  For example:
  • What is the donor's "brand"?  Would putting the donor's name on one of our buildings constitute an endorsement of any positions which run contrary to what we stand for?
  • What is the risk the donor has said or done, or will say or do, something unacceptably stupid or perhaps even criminal?
  • Would the new arena bearing the name be a perpetual focal point for protests, activists from off-campus, etc. such that we are taking on extra security and publicity risks and costs far into the future?
  • Would there be any strings attached?  What expectations will be created about what we will have to do for the donor?
  • Would the donor actually honor his pledge and in accordance with whatever agreement is struck? Does this donor have a known problem with keeping his promises or attempting to renegotiate deals?
  • Do we even want to accept a gift which forces us to do something which is not on our top priority list (especially if it means we have to put up the rest, and we're really stretched) and which brings with it so much "risk" of the above?

Just to state the obvious:  Trump IS the POTUS, and he generates an astonishing amount of unforced controversy (both deliberately and unintentionally) practically every day.  It's simply not possible or reasonable to think you can discuss a university possible accepting a major gift from such a person in a totally apolitical way.  Trust me when I say I was actually being quite restrained on this matter given all that could be said.  I was actually holding back out of respect for the board.

You do understand that 99.9 percent of multimillion dollar gifts come at the end of a fairly lengthy cultivation and negotiation.  The scenerio where a wealthy donor calls any school and says, "i'm coming over with a bag of money that i want you to accept", virtually never happens.  The "issue" of accepting a gift from a controversial donor would never play out that way.
3  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: EWU SIZING UP OPPONENTS on: August 15, 2017, 08:23:24 am
I think if we come out of the first two games healthy, we should be in this.  I'd hope that we can control the ball and time of possession.  Early in the season is the time to play a team like this.  This is a huge game.  More important than the FBS games in my book.   If we win, I think it goes a long way to putting the program on the map.
4  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: San Jose State to hire Jean Prioleau as head coach on: August 14, 2017, 09:45:29 pm
It is very common for people to say things like "in my opinion", so common that on the internet people post it as IMO. Some even post IMHO where the H stands for "humble", but I would not expect that.

As for what would happen in a x number of years if our job came open, one never knows. It is possible that it becomes open b/c of success by the coach at the time. What Jean Prioleau would do then would depend much on how he has done at SJSU and whether Fordham has interest in him. It is not as straightforward as you make it out to be, IMO.

Yes, I do it often. Just to make sure there is no doubt though, I will delineate future posts with that qualifier.

IMO, not many coaches want to stay on the mid-major level, no matter where they graduated from.  Jean may be the exception, I don't know him except to say hello.  Generally speaking, though, competitive people want to move up in the profession.
5  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: San Jose State to hire Jean Prioleau as head coach on: August 13, 2017, 03:19:31 pm
You state a lot of things as if they are fact when in reality it is just your opinion. You have no clue what Jean would do.

I am of the opinion that you can never underestimate the pull of alma mater. Might be different which whatever school it is you graduated undergrad from.

Obviously it's my opinion.  In the future should I label my posts "Fact" or "opinion". Will that pass muster?  Should everyone do that?

The guy is a coaching lifer.  Very few of guys who have dedicated their lives to the sport are not looking to get to a higher level.  It is possible that you know different people than I do and their priorities are different.  The fact that Fordham is not a successful program surely would make it seem that should Jean turn around a historically bad mid-major he would want to do it again.  But again, you may know different kinds of coaches than I do.
6  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: San Jose State to hire Jean Prioleau as head coach on: August 12, 2017, 08:25:48 am
With all due respect, if Fordham is "dead," then 12,337 posts is a lot of talking about a dead program.

I visit cemeteries.  a lot of history there.  Grin
7  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: San Jose State to hire Jean Prioleau as head coach on: August 12, 2017, 06:43:39 am
Smart move, AOC. Don't make that wager.  Smiley

If the Fordham job opened up tomorrow, do you think he's going to apply?  Not a chance.  Why?  Because he knows San Jose is a better situation. Period.
8  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: San Jose State to hire Jean Prioleau as head coach on: August 11, 2017, 04:35:57 pm
I have nothing?  What does that mean?  You make no sense at all.  No one is betting against him the wager is whether he would rather be at Fordham.  You also have not provided one fact to support your SJS love, a school you did not know existed before this.  But other than that you are killing it in this thread good work.
My original post said San Jose State would be a step back from Fordham.  I stand by it.

9  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: San Jose State to hire Jean Prioleau as head coach on: August 11, 2017, 03:18:21 pm
Sure ok got it.  Willing to wager on his preference how much?

You got nothing.  Trust me.

You're going to wager against the success of a Fordham man?!?!  Love it!!
10  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: San Jose State to hire Jean Prioleau as head coach on: August 11, 2017, 02:35:42 pm
Keep telling yourself that.  Good Kool-Aide on hot summer day.   Jean will dig the program out.  He has the resources and he's at a big state school in the middle of the Silicon Valley.  I'm sure he loves the Boogie Down but there is no comparison.

Oh wait.   I forgot.  The $2.5 mil McLaughlin Dome!  All bets are off... Cheesy
11  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: San Jose State to hire Jean Prioleau as head coach on: August 11, 2017, 12:47:07 pm
Good luck to Jean.  You have to take your shot and this is his.  He worked hard and earned this shot, I will be rooting for him and keeping an eye on his team.

With that said San Jose State has struggled like Fordham.  It's record the last 4 years 32-90.  It has not made the tournament since 1996.  No NIT bids during that time. One CBI in 2011.  It's coach resigned in July for personal reasons.  I guess what I am saying is that people need to educate themselves on a program before making grand proclamations about what type of opportunity it presents and how it compares to any other program.  Jean is taking over a struggling program in August so we may want to dial back the San Jose state is a great situation posts.  I would bet a lot of money that if he had the choice fordham or SJS he would take the Fordham job.

St. Jose State is down, no question. You can build a program, though.  Fordham is a dead.  The best you can do is string together a couple of years and get out.  Jean is a basketball lifer.  He understands the difference, even it its Fordham.
12  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: San Jose State to hire Jean Prioleau as head coach on: August 11, 2017, 07:12:51 am
An Old Coach, I am guessing that you have not heard Jean's opinion on that.  Wink

No, I haven't.  I've just looked at how hard he's worked to finally get a shot at a HC job.  No coach I've ever heard of willingly takes a step backward, even to go to alma mater.   That ship has sailed for him.
13  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: San Jose State to hire Jean Prioleau as head coach on: August 06, 2017, 09:48:12 am
This is great news. I am very happy for Jean.

I had contacted Jean and supported hiring him as our head coach but Roach would not even give him a serious interview. If he succeeds at San Jose, he will probably get better opportunities than Fordham.

San Jose is better opportunity than Fordham.  That would be a step backward.
14  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: San Jose State to hire Jean Prioleau as head coach on: August 05, 2017, 07:46:37 am
Nice spot for his first HC job.  Big state school in a decent conference. Well done and best of luck!
15  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Why the RHG is to be Named for McGlaughlin on: August 02, 2017, 05:57:53 pm
Does anyone know the progress for the fundraising for the project?

What about fundraising fore the football offices?
16  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: INTEREST RE: THIRD ANNUAL fordhamfans.com NORTH FORK BASKETBALL + LUNCHEON? on: July 31, 2017, 09:42:28 pm
FWIW, I doubt the restaurant needs any reservation at all, let alone the daily seating arrangement update of who is chipping in $10.

Ya, no doubt Joe is padding his retirement with $10 from 13 guys.   Guy is pulling a scam.  There's probably no restaurant at all.  In fact there's probly no lunch, either.  He probably went to St. John's and has never set foot in a sailboat...

17  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: 2017 Predictions on: July 28, 2017, 12:16:36 pm
My thoughts on the D.

I think Max Roberts has PL DPOY potential down the road.  What he did as a true frosh LB who was thrust into playing as an undersized DE due to injuries was amazing imo.  Staff moving him back to LB which means that between him, Thorpe, Fitzgerald should make our LB crew one of the best we've had in a long time (and we've had good LB's, so that's saying something).  Very little depth, though, so let's hope they stay healthy and/or the guys behind them or incoming freshmen develop.  Nonetheless, I think the new staff has some great players to work with at LB.

On the inside of the DL, the return of Adeyeye and Fox with Angeli backing them up and hopefully a beefed guy like Ware there as well.  Ty Green back at one DE spot but who will win the other one?  That's where Roberts played so well last year that it's tough to not put him there again since he played so tough and gave us a good pass rush.  Filling that spot will be big imo and I'm wondering if one of the frosh steps in there (Carter?).  Nonetheless, DL should be a strength for us as well.

To me then, the secondary is where our D will be made or broken.  We have played such soft coverage the past few years that it's been tough to watch and you just always have that feeling in the pit of your stomach like teams have huge gaps to throw into on 3rd long and we always seemed to be giving it up.  If Coach can bring that Bucknell mentality here you'll see much more physicality from our DB's which helps with run support and just overall excellent play from their DB's.  I think we have talent there with Ham, Menyah, Jackson and Maybin.  Hopefully the staff coaches them up and the new philosophies will produce a big improvement.  If so, it will be a very fun year imo and we will be in every game.  If not, all bets are off.

The defense is going to improve if the talent is improved, IMO.  I don't believe coaching was the issue last year.  We've had average players on the unit.  We've had a lot of injuries up front and not a lot of depth and that has been a killer.  We also don't typically hold the ball a long time on our drives so that get's the defense out there without a much of a break.  When you're getting knocked off the ball, there aren't too many coaching answers.  No reason to think Coach Bowes won't be a good one but I don't know that the "Bucknell mentality" is something to take to the bank looking at their record the past 4 years (one winning season).
18  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Recruiting Update (Football) on: July 20, 2017, 10:44:31 am
I'm a huge Lombardi fan.  50 years later, most of this still plays, in my world anyway.  It's too bad that his philosophy and methods have no place with today's young people.  Mommies would go ballistic at some of his quotes as they are so foreign to life today.   I see many similarities between Lombardi and Belichick. I think Belichick flies under the radar better and people don't realize his methods are similar.

Back to topic! Grin

Chase is a player.  It should be a great ride this year.  I can't wait to see where it goes.
20  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Next year's QB on: July 08, 2017, 02:29:05 pm
I guess not. Have to brush up on my cliches and platitudes, or reserve that space for you.

"Open competition usually means you don't have A QB on your roster."

You mean like this one?
21  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Next year's QB on: July 08, 2017, 10:04:59 am
You really don't get this college football thing, do you?
22  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Next year's QB on: July 07, 2017, 08:11:58 pm
If you say so, but if there was an obvious choice, this thread wouldn't exist.

I do.  How could there be an "obvious choice" among a couple of guys who will seldom play.   It's football.  It's about competition.  They should fight it out and the best player is the starter.
23  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Next year's QB on: July 07, 2017, 05:35:15 pm
Open competition usually means you don't have A QB on your roster.

You're reading too many NFL previews.  This isn't the pro's.  In college, open competition means the best player will usually come to the top.
24  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Football / Re: Next year's QB on: July 06, 2017, 10:57:55 pm
Who is Anderson's heir apparent?  Colton Smith, Jalen Ollie or Clayton Welsh?

I would hope there is no heir apparent. I would want an open competition with the best player emerging after a good deal of scrutiny. As long as we avoid injury, our back up Qbs aren't going to see much time. They'll have to win the starting position by playing their rear ends off in camp next year.
25  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: INTEREST RE: THIRD ANNUAL fordhamfans.com NORTH FORK BASKETBALL + LUNCHEON? on: June 30, 2017, 09:45:14 am
LATEST UPDATE:

I'm guessing that we'll have as many attendees as last year and maybe more, so app. 15-20 people. We lucked out on the patio of Pepi's
the past two years as both days were sunny, hot and with a light breeze. However, the wind was strong today with gusts in excess of 20 knots, which I realized would not be conducive to a pleasant outside meal at Pepi's. Add rain to the occasion, and our party would be too large to be moved inside. Ergo, I made an executive decision and reserved the private room overlooking the docks, Greenport Harbor and Shelter Island on the second floor of Claudio's Restaurant in Greenport, just a couple of miles east of Pepi's, and within a short walk of the North Ferry. In fact, anyone coming from the Hamptons should park their vehicle by the North Ferry on Shelter Island, and walk onto the ferry. Claudio's is a short, no more than two-block walk along the waterfront when you egress the ferry. That way, you will save money on the ferry and importantly not have to wait an extended time on the inevitable Friday afternoon ferry line to Shelter Island after the luncheon.

Claudio's is allegedly the USA's oldest same family owned restaurant. The seafood is very good and I invite you to visit their website at:
www.claudios.com. You can even click on their rooftop camera from the website and check out the yachts at the dock and to the right, you may catch sight of the ferry going to or coming from Shelter Island. In any event, in the case of inclement weather, no one will have an excuse for not coming, and in nice weather, the view will be spectacular.

BTW, free parking is available for diners at Claudios. The lot is on the waterfront immediately adjacent to Claudios. You just have to get your ticket validated before you leave the restaurant.

For those coming from CT, are you running the limo from the ferry?
26  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: DePaul transfer Erten Gazi has committed to Fordham, per a source. on: June 28, 2017, 08:41:35 am
I agree about the Danny Thompson, Brennan Melvin 11th hour types. Nothing against either transfer but another guy from Turkey seems a bit ridiculous. Obviously, its Ali Ton's doing.  Never saw the kid play but sitting him a year, along with Portley,  and  perhaps playing further into the guys leaving if they graduate early, makes the whole scenario not wise from a program management standpoint.

That being said, maybe the staff simply couldnt get anyone this year, which of course is a far bigger problem.  Neubie can flat out coach,  I think we know that. But its year 3 and no free rides. I wouldnt bank year 3 ( the most important year) on 2 mid major guards sitting out as transfers. Sometimes that means there is no year 4.

Not at Fordham. He's going to get a long leash. As you point out, he's is a good coach but some things are out of his control.  As long as we beat bad teams, come close once in a while and don't lose by 20 most nights, JN will be with us for the foreseeable future.
27  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: DePaul transfer Erten Gazi has committed to Fordham, per a source. on: June 27, 2017, 05:31:45 pm
Not worth all of the arguing.  I doubt anyone thinks he'll turn around the program.   I think he'll be a solid role player off the bench.

I doubt we are turning away 4 star players right now.

Great.  Another "solid player off the bench".  That will get things turned around...

JN is going into year 3.  Where are his recruits?  At most schools, year 3 is fairly critical.

Maybe the question that should be asked a little louder is, what the heck is going on with recruiting?  I'm not seeing much of an upgrade in talent, are you?
28  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: DePaul transfer Erten Gazi has committed to Fordham, per a source. on: June 27, 2017, 11:56:00 am
Perspective!   Fordham MBB looking down on anyone in the Big East!

We've made progress.... but I don't think we're at the point where we can look down on BE teams or players.

I watched his video and I'm impressed with his skill and speed making moves to the basket. Especially against strong competition.

And if he's not, they've got a year to get him a contract to play in Turkey.

Sorry.  You don't improve a mediocre program by bringing in castoffs from one of the worst programs in the country.  It's not like this guy is the last man on the Michigan State bench.  Could he develop some time down the line?  Maybe.  This is not the kind of player you build a program around.  This is a roster filler.

"Highlight" videos don't mean much with a kid who never plays.  We already have plenty of guys at the end of our bench.  We don't need another down-in-the-tooth program's.  The idea is to recruit up.

29  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: DePaul transfer Erten Gazi has committed to Fordham, per a source. on: June 27, 2017, 09:56:33 am
This is how transfers should work.   Higher conference scholarship player not getting enough minutes..... move down a notch and be a more competitive talent.

I'm assuming Ali Ton knows the kid well enough to confidently recommend him.

Seems like good work..

?

Perspective.  The last player on the end of the bench on the worst team in the BE.  This is progress?  Come on guys. This is not solid recruiting.  This is bringing in a warm body. There is no way to spin this as a good get.
30  The Fordham Forums / Fordham Men's Basketball / Re: Recruiting Update on: June 21, 2017, 10:20:21 am
That's what I thought.  I can't figure out how he gets 4 stars, though.  That is a very high rating.
