We open the year in Tuscon Thursday night with back-to-back games vs #21 Baylor and #10 Arizona.  Heck of a way to baptize our new freshmen pitchers!

Baylor finished ranked #14 last year and Arizona, in an "off year", finished #19.

Baylor has 6 returning starters who, as a team averaged .319 BA and have 4 returning pitchers, including their leading pitcher, Kendall Potts (13-1, 1.93 ERA).  They have lots of speed, with 77 SBs in a very tough league and are excellent defensively with a .971 Fldg pctg.

Arizona is coached by Mike Candrea, a slap-hitting guru who coached Team USA for several years.  Last year, however, the Wildcats used a lot of power for their success, hitting 67 HRs and had a .472 slugging pctg.  This year, Arizona has 4 top-50 Player of the Year prospects.

On Friday, we then play Tulsa, which finished ranked #41 last year, then CSUN and Northwestern on Saturday.  CSUN was ranked #57 last year and NW finished ranked #45.   We were #62.

Very tough opening weekend!  Go Rams.

It IS the best varsity program on campus.  With little practice time outside over the winter vs most of our early competition, it makes it that much harder though.

Here's a good preview by the SID and links to watch several of the games.

Vs 21 Baylor, the Rams lead 1-0 after 5 1/2 on  Hughes HR.  Figeroa (LF) made a diving catch and threw a Baylor runner out at 3b in the 6th.

We loaded the bases in the bottom of the 6th, but left them stranded.

Quense is in the circle for the Rams.  Vergona (C), Shaw (1b), Hughes (2b), Van Hoven (SS), Mayer (3b), Figeroa (LF), Canessa (CF), Skrepenak (RF).  All the same that ended last year.

Baylor has a freshman pitching in relief of a sophomore who had a 3.35 ERA last year.

Vs #10 Arizona, we have the same lineup, except for Quense at 1b for Shaw (but Shaw still hitting as dh) and Ferri at C for Vergona, with freshman Aughinbauh in the circle.  Tough task for a freshman in her first game.

Arizona has a senior in the circle who had a 2.17 ERA last year.

We got a run in the top of the 1st on 3 singles.  Hughes was thrown out at home on a GB to SS.  2 LOB.

Arizona got 3 runs on 4 hits and 2 errors in the 1st.

Arizona got 3 more runs in the 3rd.

Freshman Stocks, a lefty, came in to pitch for Aughinbauh in the 4th.

Stocks gave up a run in the 4th on a single, SB and 2 sac flies.   Skrepenak made her 2nd error, letting a batter reach 3b and a WP allowed another run in.  We tend to make a lot of errors early in the year, having had so little time practicing outside.  Rams are down 8-1 after 4 and are in danger of getting run-ruled.

We held them scoreless in the 5th and 6th as Coach Candrea started freely substituting.

We lost 8-1.

We got 3 hits in the 1st, our 1st three hitters, and Mayer got a hit in the 7th.  That was it.  We had 4 LOB and had 9 Ks.

Stocks wound up giving up 1 hit, 2 runs (1 earned), with 3 Ks and 1 BB in 3 innings.  Aughinbauh gave up 8 hits, with 1 K and 2 BBs in 3 innings.   5 of her allowed 6 runs were earned.

The next game is vs Tulsa tomorrow at 1 pm.

Vs. Tulsa, who got top 25 preseason votes, we have the same lineup as vs Baylor, with freshman Johnston as DH and Quense in the circle.  Johnston was a 3 year All State IF from Virginia and Offensive POY as a Junior.

Hughes hit a 2-run HR in the 1st after Van Hoven singled.  That's Hughes' 2nd HR in 3 games.  She only had 3 HRs all of last year.

In the 3rd, Van Hoven was HBP, stole 2b and was brought home on a Canessa double.

Quense gave up a leadoff double in the 4th and allowed the runner to reach 3b on a WP but got out of it.

In the 5th, Hughes walked and Canessa doubled with no outs.  A WP bounced back to the catcher and Canessa was caught off second.  Another WP brought in Hughes.

Quense gave up a single, BB and a HR in the 5th.  Looks like she's getting tired and is throwing more changeups.  She subsequently gave up a single and a BB, but no further damage was done.

In the 6th, Shaw singled and freshman Johnston, DH for Figueroa, hit her first collegiate HR.  Skrepenak singled and stole 2b.  Van Hoven singled and stole 2b.  Hughes ground Skrepenak home.

Freshmen Stocks and Aughinbauh came in in the 7th and gave up 2 runs and 1 run respectively and Quense had to get the last out, but not before giving up a 2 run single with the bases loaded.

Rams win 7-6.  A quality win against a good team.

Quense gave up 3 earned runs on 9 hits with 5Ks and 3 BBs.  We had 7 hits.  Hughes and Johnston had a HR and Van Hoven had 2 doubles.  We had 7 Ks, most looking.  We had 5 runners LOB and Tulsa had 7.

This potentially, with Johnston, is one of the best hitting lineups I've seen us have.  Our freshmen pitchers will have to come through though if we are to improve over last year.

We next play Cal State Saturday at 11 am ET, per the schedule, although the SID pregame writeup says noon.  Go figure.  Arizona beat them 6-0 today.

I have the game as a 7-6 Rams' win as Tulsa scored 3 in the bottom of the 7th and Quense who left after 6, had to come back to the circle to get the final out and thus save her own win!

Yep, thanks Rick.  My connection went out and all I saw was the last out, not realizing Tulsa had scored.

The top 25 vote-getters are the only ones officially ranked, but maybe 40 or so teams get votes.  I calculated an "equivalent" ranking based on the number of votes they got.  If we win both games tomorrow, we should get votes.  We may get votes even if we only win 1 of 2 based on the caliber of competition this week.

I corrected the link in the previous comment.  I must have Fordham SID-itis...too many mistakes today.  Wink

Vs. CSUN, Aughinbauh is in the circle, Quense is at 1b, and Johnston is DH.

Van Hoven led off with a double in the bottom of the first.  Hughes singled her to 3b, then stole 2b. Mayer scored Van Hoven on a GB FC to SS.  2 runners LOB.  Rams up 1-0 after 1.

Aughinbauh gave up a leadoff double down the line past Mayer at 3b in the 2nd. Another double moved the lead runner to 3b. An infield single scored a run.  She's throwing a lot of pitches, either balls or they are being fouled off.

Aughinbauh gave up a HR in the 3rd to give CSUN a 2-1 lead.

She got 2 Ks in the 4th, albeit in the bottom of the CSUN lineup.  I think she has a good rise ball given the swings the CSUN players took striking out.

Rams down 2-1 after 4.

I'm not sure why Shaw isn't playing 1b instead of Quense, although Quense is slightly better defensively.  Shaw is a much better hitter, with more power.  (.361 vs .169 last year and 10 HRs vs 1)

I'm also not sure why Shaw isn't DH ahead of freshman Johnston.  Shaw was our best hitter last year.

Aughinbauh gave up a triple in the 5th.  A sac fly scored a run.  Rams down 3-1 after 5.

Canessa made a leaping catch in CF in the 6th to save another double.  CSUN is hitting Aughinbauh hard.

In the 6th, Hughes walked and Canessa hit a HR to tie the game at 3.  That was Canessa's 1st HR this year.  She led the team with 1 last year.

Shaw hit a pinch hit HR to win the game 4-3 in the bottom of the 7th!  It just reinforced my point about her not being in the lineup.

Just like last year, this team never gives up.

We only had 5 hits, but 2 were HRs, from Canessa and Shaw.

Aughinbauh gave up 3 ER on 7 hits with 5 Ks and 0 BBs.

The Rams are now 3-1 and next face Northwestern tonight at 9 pm ET.

Thanks. That is what I ended up with, but those Cal schools are always switching up how they are referred to.

Win tonight and we have a shot at being ranked, the first time since Jen Mineau days.  It usually takes an ace to get by the better teams.  Wish we had Jen now, but we've got a better hitting team than she had.

Northwestern beat Tulsa 3-2, lost to Baylor 7-6 in 8, and lost to Arizona, via run rule, 11-3, NW getting a 2-run HR in the top of the 5th to prolong the game 1/2 an inning.  They are a good hitting team, but their pitchers seem to have control problems.

Our game with them will get started late due to the game vs AZ just finishing at 9:15.  It's usually a 30 minute difference.  Our game will have Live Stats only.

Vs NW, Quense is in the circle, Shaw is at 1b and Johston is DH for Figueroa (in LF).  Quense has a 1.50 ERA and 1.29 WHIP.  Ellis is pitching for NW.  She's a sophomore who has only pitched 4 innings this year and has a 5.25 ERA.

Van Hoven led off the game with an infield single.  Canessa drew a walk.  Both advanced on a WP.  Van Hoven scored on a Mayer GB.  Johnston walked.  Shaw singled home Canessa.  Two LOB as Quense K'd.

Quense retired the side in order with 2 Ks in the 1st.  Rams up 2-0 after 1.

We got a walk in the 2nd, but that was it.  Quense got 3 GB outs.  Rams up 2-0 after 2.

Canessa led off the 3rd with a single, followed by one by Mayer.  Both are hitting .357 so far this year against strong pitching.  Quense singled home 2 more runs.  Rams up 4-0 mid 3rd.

Quense gave up a leadoff double in the 3rd, got a K, gave up an infield single, they got a SB, an infield single to load the bases, a pop up, and a K to get out of the jam!  Rams up 4-0 after 3.

We went down in order in the 4th.  Quense gave up a single, got a force at 2b, got a K, and a FO.  Rams up 4-0 after 4.

We went down in order in the 5th with 3 GBs to 3b.  Quense gave up a walk, an infield single, Hughes made a throwing error, they stole 2b, got a K,  an infield single scored a run, got another SB, both with a runner on 3b, an infield single scored another run, a single up the middle scored a run.  Rams lead 4-3 after 5.

We went down in order again in the 6th.  Vergona is only hitting .067.  We need more offense out of the catching position.  Would almost prefer to let Figuero hit instead, even though she lacks power.  .269 last year vs .188.  Quense gave up a 1-out single, Mayer made a throwing error, got a force, HPB to load the bases, and a FO to get out of trouble.  NW has left 9 runners on base.  Rams up 4-3 after 6.

In the 7th, Van Hoven walked but Hughes lined into a DP.  Quense is facing 4-5-6, and from the sound of it, is tiring.  This is where we need a reliable relief pitcher.  She gave up a leadoff single, then another single, got a foul out, got a force at 2b, runners on the corners, and ended it with a K!  Gutsy performance.

Rams win 4-3.

We got 5 hits and had 4 BBs.  Quense had 2 RBIs.  She gave up 11 hits, 2 ER, had 7 Ks and 1 BB.

We're 4-1, tying the best start in program history*, but against much tougher competition.  We may not crack the top 25 but we should get votes.

(*) In 2013 we beat Chattanooga twice, along with LIU and Va Tech.  In 2010 we beat Morehead State twice, along with Quinnipiac and #19 Texas A&M.
