This week we'll be favored in every game, playing Bryant (#259 last year) twice, St. Francis PA (#144) twice, and E. Carolina (#148) once.

As Bridget said in an interview, now that we got top 25 votes to be ranked the equivalent of #30 in the country, we'll have a target on our backs.  We'll also almost always face the opponent's #1 pitcher.

The first game is Friday at noon and there will be live coverage.  The link is at:  http://www.fordhamsports.com/schedule.aspx?path=softball

Deserved ranking of #30. Now just focus on the task at hand and take care of business. Great opportunity to have what I imagine would be the best 10 game start in Fordham WSB history. Go Rams

In the first game vs Bryant, the lineup is Van Hoven (SS), Canessa, (CF), Mayer (3b), Johnston, (DP), Shaw (1b), Quense (P), Storm (2b) in place of Hughes, Skrepenak (RF), Figueroa (LF) and Vergona (C).  It looks like Johnston is hitting for Vergona today instead of Figueroa, as I had suggested, although given the competition, I think Bridget is letting other players get some experience.

This is Bryant's first game of the year.  They are out of Rhode Island by the way.  They were 12-36 last year.  They have a very young team this year, heavily weighted with sophomore and freshmen.

In the 1st, Van Hoven singled and stole 2b, Canessa walked, Mayer doubled home Van Hoven, Shaw walked and Quense walked, scoring Canessa.  Skrepenak walked, scoring Mayer.  Figueroa walked, scoring Shaw.  Van Hoven, batting around, doubled, clearing the bases.  New pitcher for the Bulldogs.  Rams up 7-0 after 1/2 inning.

Quense gave up a single in the 1st along with a walk, and got a K.  Rams up 7-0 after 1.

In the 2nd, Johnston and Quense walked, making 8 walks so far.  Both were left stranded.  Rams up 7-0 after 1 1/2.

Quense gave up a single and got 2 Ks in the 2nd.  Rams up 7-0 after 2.

Van Hoven singled in the 3rd and stole 2b and Mayer walked but both were LOB.  Rams still up 7-0.

Quense retired the side in order in the 3rd, getting one K.  Rams up 7-0 after 3.

In the 4th, Quense walked for the 3rd time.  We now have 10 BBs.  She was left stranded.

Quense retired the side in order in the 4th.  Rams up 7-0 ater 4.

In the 5th, Trivelpiece PH for Figueroa and got a bunt single and stole 2b, our 4th.  Canessa got her 3rd and our 11th walk.  Mayer hit into a FC but runners advanced on an error.  Both were LOB again.

Freshman Stocks in to pitch for Quense in the bottom of the 5th.  Ferri in to catch for Vergona.  Stocks gave up a walk, but got 2 Ks.  This game should have been over via run rule.  Rams up 7-0 after 5.

Shaw doubled in the 6th and moved to 3b on an error and scored on a GB out.  Skrepenak walked, Trivelpiece singled, and stole 2b. Van Hoven walked, but Canessa K'd, looking.  3 LOB.

Stocks retired the side in order, getting 1 Ks.  Rams win 8-0 via run rule in 6 innings.

We got 7 hits.  Van Hoven had 3 and Trivelpiece had 2.  We had 13 walks and 12 LOB.   Quense went 4 innings, gave up 2 hits, with 1 BB and 4 Ks.  Stocks went 2 innings, with no hits, 3 Ks and 1 BB.  Van Hoven had 3 SBs and Trivelpiece had 2.

I like our patience at the plate in this one, but we didn't have timely hitting and not many hits up and down the lineup.  Too many LOB.

We're 5-1 and next face St. Francis at 2:30 ET.  They are 4-1, facing pretty weak competition so far this year.

Am going to watch Fordham play HBU in baseball along with Scott who drove down from Ft. Worth, so I can't cover the St.Francis game live.

2nd game against St. Francis Fordham leads 2-0 after one and a half innings. Shaw singled for 1 run and Trivelpiece grounded out to score the 2nd run.  Madison Aughinbaugh pitching for the Rams. She gave up 1 hit over 1st 2 innings.

Madison gave up 2 singles and a 3 run homer in the 3rd.  Canessa and Shaw hit doubles to score one run. Score tied 3-3 after 3
.
Score is still 3-3 after 5 innings. Rams still have only 5 hits. Madison has given up 3 hits.

Madison retired the side in the 6th. Vergona doubled and Johnson walked - Rams left 2 on in the 6th - still 3-3
.
Madison retired the side in the seventh. Canessa got a double and was left on 3rd base - extra innings.
Madison walked 1 - struck out 2 and Rams made  one error in 8th still tied 3-3 after 8.

St' Francis scored 2 runs in the 9th. Stocks replaced Madison to get the last 2 outs. Rams left 1 runner on base in the 9th - final score St. Francis 5 - Rams 3.

Hopefully TX will be back for the next game.

Madison walked 1 - struck out 2 and Rams made  one error in 8th still tied 3-3.
Aughinbauh gave up a single in the 9th, a HBP, a SB with Vergona throwing the ball into LF, allowing a run to score; a single was followed by another SB.  Same old problem throwing runners out.  (we're 0-10 this year.)  Stocks in for Aughinbauh.  She gave up a walk and got a K.  Rams down 5-3 going to the bottom of the 9th.

Van Hoven reached on a error with 1 out but was LOB.

We lost 5-3.  Aughinbauh pitched well, giving up 5 hits, but 5 BBs, with 11 Ks in 8 innings.  Being (I think) a rise ball pitcher, she got a lot of fly ball outs, but is going to give up HRs too.  I wish Stocks had come in in relief sooner.

We had 7 hits.  Canessa and Shaw each getting 2.  We had 9 LOB.  Not having Hughes in the lineup (flu) meant a lot.

We'll face the other team's #1 pitcher, like today, and have to produce.  The 3 errors didn't help though, nor did the allowed SBs, but this was easily a winnable game.  That surely knocked us out of "the top 40" in the rankings.

We're now 5-2 and next play St. Francis again tomorrow at 4:15.

Here's the SID's writeup of the two games:  http://fordhamsports.com/news/2017/2/17/softball-splits-doubleheader-to-begin-pirate-clash.aspx

Through Friday's games, Shaw leads the team in hitting at .350, just like she did last year, showing she should always be in the lineup instead of being replaced by Johnston as DP, who is at .167.  Johnston will be real good, but Shaw is a proven commodity.

We're only hitting .226 as a team, which is well below this team's potential, but we do have a lot of walks.

Our fielding is only .955, under our total year normal, but about the same as it usually is early in the year.

We're 11-11 in SBs, led this time by Van Hoven with 6.

We have a 3.29 ERA, led by Quense's 1.73.

In the 2nd game vs St. Francis, we won 6-1.  Quense pitched a complete  game, giving up 5 hits, with 5 Ks and 1 BB.

We got 7 hits, with Canessa and Shaw each getting 2.  Shaw also had 2 RBIs.

Hughes was back from her illness.

VS E Carolina, Stocks is pitching.  Johnston is at 1b instead of Quense and Shaw is DP.  This should be a better hitting lineup.

It's 0-0 after 3 innings.

Shaw doubled in the 4th but was stranded.

Stocks gave up a HR in the bottom of the 4th, then a double, although I'd have called it an error on Skrepenak.  Rams down 1-0 after 4.

Figueroa tripled in the 5th and scored on a Van Hoven GB to tie the game at 1.  Hughes hit a HR.  That's her 3rd HR, matching her entire output of last year.   Rams up 2-1 after 4 1/2.

Aughinbaugh in to pitch for Stocks.   From a lefty to a righty rise ball pitcher, giving ECU a different look.  She gave up a double though, off Figueroa's glove, which maybe should have been caught.  Hughes made an error, allowing a run to score.  2-2 after 5 innings.

Johnston walked in the 6th.  Shaw singled to RF but Johnston was thrown out at 3b.  Vergona singled. Both were LOB.  2-2 after 5 1/2.

Aughinbauh got 2 Ks in the bottom of the 6th in retiring the side in order.  2-2 after 6.

Figueroa got an infield single to lead off the 7th.  The ump is giving ECU a foot outside as a strike.  Hughes singled.  Figueroa moved to 3b.  1 out.  Hughes stole 2b.  Only her 2nd steal this year.  Canessa walked to load the bases.  Mayer flied out to LF and Figueroa was thrown out at home.  Still 2-2.

Aughinbauh gave up a leadoff double, then a walk.  Quense in to pitch.  She got a foul pop, a K, then gave up a double that scored the winning run.  Another fly ball that Skrepenak should have caught in RF.

Rams lose 3-2.

Stocks went 4 innings, giving up 1 run on 3 hits with 1 BB.  Aughinbauh went 2 innings, giving up 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits, with 2 Ks and 1 BB.  Quense didn't give up any earned runs as the last one was charged to Aughinbauh.  The defense didn't help the pitchers any today.  We had 1 official error but I'd have given us 3 more to the corner outfielders that led to 2 runs.

The runners being thrown out at 3b and home hurt, but they were the right attempts.  Just good ECU plays.

We had 10 hits.  Hughes had 3, including a HR.  Shaw, Vergona and Figueroa had 2 each.  We left 8 runners on base to ECU's 4.

Shaw is hitting .423 now, Canessa .370, Hughes .350, Van Hoven .300.  The problem is Vergona is at .182, Johnston is at .176, Quense is at .111 and Skrepenak is at .105.  I certainly don't hope to see Shaw not in the lineup again.  She's too good of a hitter.

We're 6-3 and shouldn't be losing to these teams.  We next face Bryant tomorrow at 9:30 am.

We beat Bryant 16-0 in 6 innings, as we should have.  I don't have any of the details yet, but obviously, we scored at least 9 runs in the 6th, otherwise the game would have been over in 5.

We're 7-3 and next play an exhibition game against the Czech Republic in Orlando on the 24th, then take on (temporarily #1 ranked) Florida.  They lost yesterday to unranked Maryland, so Auburn could move up to #1.  The other games are against tougher competition than we had this weekend, but not quite as tough as we faced the first weekend.

As much as the first weekend was somewhat unexpectedly great, this one was disappointing, only going 3-2 when we were favored in all 5 games.  We have things to work on.  The bottom of the lineup has to start producing and we need to shore up our defense, which I think will come with more games.  Early in the year it's always tough, not having played outside since late October-early November.  I think the freshmen pitchers are improving and Quense is solid in the circle.

TxRam, agree this was a 5-0 or. 4-1 weekend. Unfortunately I do not see us getting any top 25 votes after this weekend.

The team looks very promising and should definitely be the favorite in the A10 - Beyond that I think that it is too early to determine.
Not to throw a bucket of cold water on things but it is interesting to note the records thus far of some of the opposing teams

CSUN (Cal State Northridge) - 1-6
Tulsa - 4-6 (St. Johns beat them 4-1)
Northwestern - 1-8
Even Baylor, as good as they are, lost to North Texas State

This is great experience for a young Ram team and should have them ready to go for the conference games

Quense threw a no hitter vs Bryant.  Her 1 BB kept her from a perfect game, albeit only 6 innings.  She had 10 GB outs.http://www.fordhamsports.com/news/2017/2/19/quense-tosses-no-hitter-as-softball-wins-big-over-bryant.aspx?path=softball

We had 16 hits.  Now "power hitter" Hughes got  her 4th HR of the year.  She, Johnston, Shaw and Vergona each had 2 hits.  Mayer had 3.

We still left 12 on base.  Trivelpiece played Rf for Strepanak, whose been struggling at the plate and defensively.

No way, unless someone slept all weekend.  If the RPI was out, I'd say we'd be in the mid-to-high 50's.

Good analysis, Rambart.  SJU should have a top 100 team this year after just missing it at 109 last year.  Baylor just barely got by Grand Canyon and UT San Antonio.  I'd say they were overrated.  Northwestern has had a very tough schedule, playing 6 top-25 games.
