The 10-4 Rams travel to Raleigh this week to face Lehigh, Rutgers and NC State.

The first game is  Friday at 10 am vs Lehigh, who are 3-2 this year and were ranked #77 last year to our #62.  They hit .246 as a team, led by Senior Ashley Cole's .500.  Their ERA is 3.50, but 2 of their 3 pitchers are at 2.00 or below.  Their 2 losses were to a very good Syracuse team and #3 Florida.

We follow that game with one vs Rutgers at 12:15.  Rutgers is 1-8 and were ranked #116 last year.  Their one win was against a solid Boston College team and none of their losses were against "cupcakes".   They're hitting .262, led by freshman Taryn Atlee's .424.  Their weaknesses are lack of power, speed, and their pitching, which has a 7.41 ERA, control problems, and gives up a lot of HRs.

Lastly, we play NC State on Saturday at 12:15, followed by a 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3-seed game at 2:30 or 4:45.  The losers play Sunday at 10:00 and the winners play at 12:15.  NC State is 3-11 and were ranked #98 last year.  7 of their losses have come against top-25 teams, however.  As such, their stats may be a little misleading.  They're hitting .251, with little power, lots of Ks, but decent speed.  Their ERA is 7.42 and WHIP is above 2.0, but they have more Ks than BBs.

Here's our SID writeup and the link to the schedule, all of which will be televised and have Live Stats:  http://www.fordhamsports.com/news/2017/3/2/softball-heads-to-raleigh-for-n-c-state-invitational.aspx?path=softball

Despite the records, this will be a tougher overall tournament than the one we were in last week.

Vs Lehigh, it's our usual lineup, except Johnston and Shaw having switched 4-5 positions and Mayer moving to third, Vergona is hitting, and Skrepenak, in a slump, is playing RF but not hitting.  Something I had been proprosing.  Quense is pitching.

In the 1st, Quense gave up an infield single.  The runner stole 2b.  Teams are now 13/15 in steals against us.  Quense got out of it, but all 3 outs were well hit.
Sorem, who has a 1.53 ERA, is is the circle for Lehigh.  We went down in order.  0-0 after 1.

In the second, it was a repeat of the 1st, with an infield single, SB, but that was it.
Mayer singled in our half, but was LOB.  0-0 after 2.

Lehigh got another infield single in the 3rd.  A pop fly single dropped between Hughes at 2b and Skrepenak in RF.  Lehigh got a double past Mayer at 3b and a run.  The ball looked foul.  An error by Van Hoven at SS on a dribbler brought a 2nd run home.
In our half, Figeroa and Hughes singled.  We got a run on an error by 2b on a Van Hoven GB.  Hughes scored on a FC GB to 3b by Canessa as Hughes beat the throw home.  Mayer walked to load the bases.  Shaw hit into a force out but a throwing error by C to double her up scored a run.  Rams up 3-2 after 3.

Aughinbaugh in to pitch for Quense in the 4th, with Quense moving to 1st for Shaw.  She gave up a single.  A sac bunt moved the runner to 2b, but she was stranded.
Quense got an infield single, which could easily have been an error on 2b.  Figueroa hit into a force after a Vergona pop out.  Hughes tripled and Figueroa scored.  Rams up 4-2 after 4.

We won 4-2.

Here's the box score and rest of the play by play if anyone wants it:  http://www.fordhamsports.com/boxscore.aspx?path=softball&id=6108

We only got 6 hits to Lehigh's 9 and had 7 Ks.  Lehigh always plays us tough.

Vs Rutgers, we have the same lineup, except, as I had predicted, Trivelpiece is in RF for Skrepenak and is hitting.  Vergona is being DH'd for.  Quense is pitching again.

Jones, with a 7.13 ERA and twice as many BBs as Ks is pitching for Rutgers.

In the 1st, Hughes led off with a HR, her 5th of the year.  Nobody else has more than 1, which is all that Hughes had last year.  Van Hoven doubled.  Mayer reached on a FC with everyone safe.  Shaw walked to load the bases.  Johnston K'd looking after hammering several FBs  Quense repeated that.  Rams up 1-0 with 3 LOB.

Quense gave up a leadoff double to Atlee, off the LCF wall, the a walk.  A sac bunt moved the runners up.  A sac fly scored a run.  A runner is caught trying to steal 3b as she beat the throw but overslid the bag.  1-1 after 1.

Trivelpiece singled to lead off the 2nd.  Figueroa popped up.  Hughes walked.  Van Hoven doubled, scoring 2.  Canessa got a bunt single and stole 2b, her 1st of the year.  Mayer singled on an infield pop up lost in the.  Shaw hit a grand slam!  New pitcher forr Rutgers, little used Levine, with a 7.20 ERA.  Johnston grounded out and Quense walked.  Trivelpiece groundedout.
Quense got a K, a GB out, gave up a walk, and got a 2nd K.  Rams up 7-1 after 2.

In the 3rd, Figueroa popped up, Hughes walked again and stole 2b, her 8th.  Van Hoven flied out to deep CF.  Canessa walked.  Mayer fouled out.  2 LOB.
Quense gave up 2 singles and an infield FC scored a run.  An infield single scored another run.  Quense gave up another single before getting out of the inning.  Rams up 7-3 after 3.

In the 4th, Shaw was caught looking on a changeup.  Johnston walked.  WP moved runner up.  Quense walked.  Trivelpiece K'd on a high called strike.  Figueroa grounded out 2 LOB.  Live Stats are stuck.
Freshman Stocks in to pitch for Quense, who moved to 1b.  She retired the side in order.  Rams up 7-3 after 4.

In the 5th, Hughes walked for the 3rd time.  That's our 8th of the game.  Hughes stole 2b.  Van Hoven GB out moved Hughes to 3b.  Squeeze play by Canessa scored a run.  Mayer doubled off the LF wall.  Shaw hit a 3-run HR.  Ferri in to PH, K'd.  Quense walked.  New pitcher, Keefer, with a 12.10 ERA came in to pitch for Rutgers.  Trivelpiece singled.  Figueroa grounded out.  2 LOB.  Rams up 11-3 after 5, threatening the run rule.
Stocks retired the side in oder so Rams win 11-3.

We got 11 hits.  Van Hoven, Canessa, Mayer, Shaw and Trivelpiece each had 2.  Shaw had 2 hrs and 7 RBIs.
Quense gave up 3 runs on 6 hits in 3 innings with 2 Ks and 2 BBs, with less than her best stuff in either game today.

We're 12-4 and next face NC State tomorrow at 12:15.  They lost to Lehigh and beat Rutgers.

Here's the box score on this one:  http://www.fordhamsports.com/boxscore.aspx?path=softball&id=6109

My daughter played a travel tournament at NC State. Nice facilities and they had several smokers selling BBQ - North Carolina style OFC!

In the prior game Rutgers surprisingly shut out Lehigh 8-0.  NC State split with them beating Rutgers.

We have the same lineup as yesterday with Trivelpiece in RF and Johnston as DH for Vergona.  Quense is in the circle.  NC State has a lefty freshman, Silverman pitching, who has a 7.19 ERA but has good control.  She's not overpowering, but hits her spots.

Hughes singled to lead off the game and stole 2b, her 10th.  Van Hoven got an infield single.  Canessa sacrificed the runners up a base, a rarity from how Bridget used to coach those situations.  Mayer K'd.  Shaw walked to load the bases.  Johnston K'd.  3 LOB.
In the bottom half, Quense got 2 GB outs and a fly out.  0-0 after 1.

In the 2nd, Quense popped up.  Trivelpiece K'd, looking.  Figueroa fouled out.
Quense got a K, and 2 fly outs to CF.  She's getting behind in the count a little and getting the ball up in the zone, which is dangerous.  0-0 after 2.

In the 3rd, Hughes popped up.  Van Hoven walked.  Canessa doubled off the LF wall and thus joined the 200 hit club.  Her 8th double this year.  Mayer was HBP to load the bases.  Shaw's sac fly scored a run and moved the runners up.  Johnston grounded out.  2 LOB.
Quense gave up a single off Mayer's glove at 3b.  Then gave up a 2-run HR to the #8 hitter, just out of Canessa's leap in CF.  That was only her 3rd HR given up all year.  She then got 2 pop ups and a GB out.  Rams down 2-1 after 3.

In the 4th, Quense fouled out.   Trivelpiece got an infield single.   Figueroa walked.  Hughes K'd, looking.  Van Hoven grounded out.  2 more LOB.
Quense got a GB out, gave up a single, got a pop up, gave up a walk on 4 pitches, and a pop up.  Rams down 2-1 after 4.

In the 5th, Canessa walked.  Mayer lined into a DP.  Shaw flied out.
Quense got a GB out, gave up a slap single, and another 2-run HR.  As I had said earlier, she's been leaving the ball up a lot, including on her changeups.   She then gave up a single to RF.  Got up a deep fly ball out, just short of a HR, and a fly ball out.  When she's on her game, she gets more GB outs.  Rams down 4-1 after 5.

In the 6th, Johnston flied out.  Quense K'd, looking.  Trivelpiece flied out.
Aughinbaugh in to pitch for Quense, who moved to 1b for Shaw.  She gave up a walk on 4 pitches.  A sac bunt moved the runner.  She got a fly out.  A LD off the LF wall scored another run.  She gave up a bloop single, then got a GB out.  Rams down 5-1 after 6.

In the 7th, Figueroa grounded out.  Hughes walked.  Van Hoven doubled. Canessa walked to load the bases.  Mayer walked in a run after just missing a grand slam, foul.  An error on a Shaw GB scored 2 runs.  An error on a Johnston infield popup loaded the bases.  Quense hit a grand slam to put the Rams up 8-5!  Trivelpiece popped up and Figueroa grounded out.
Stocksin to pitch for Aughinbaugh.  She gave up a leadoff walk, got a pop up, a single, a walk to load the bases, bringing Quense back in to pitch.  She gave up a single and a run.  A GB out scored a run.  A foul fly out ended it.

Rams win 8-7.

We should have lost that one, but took advantage of NC State errors.

We only got 6 hits, but the big grand slam from Quense with 1 out in the 7th.  Van Hoven had 2 hits, including a double.
Our pitching struggled.  Quense went 5.2, giving up 4 runs on 7 hits (2 HRs) with 1 K and 1 BB.. Aughinbaugh went 1 inning, giving up 1 run on 2 hits.  Stocks went 0.1, giving up 2 runs on 1 hit and 2 BBs.

We're 13-4 and we'll play the next game as the #1 seed, which will be at about 3:30 vs Rutgers, the #4 seed.

In our 2nd game Saturday, as #1 seed we'll face #4 seed Rutgers.  Aughinbaugh is in the circle.  We have the same lineup except that Vergona is hitting and Shaw is DH instead of Johnston and Quense is at 1b.  Keefer (10.67 ERA) is pitching for Rutgers.  She has control problems.  Thankfully, there are much better announcers for this one.

In the 1st, Aughinbaugh got 2 GB outs on 2 pitches, then a HR to LCF.  Trivelpiece made a diving grab in RF for out #3.
Hughes led off with a HR to tie it.  Her 6th of the year after 1 all of last year.  She must have been hitting the weight room in the off season.  Van Hoven, Canessa and Mayer grounded out. 1-1 after 1.

In the 2nd, Aughinbaugh gave up a leadoff single, got a GB force, the runner stole 2b as Vergona's throw was in time but high, got a fly ball out, and a pop up.
Shaw, who had 7 RBIs vs Rutgers yesterday, singled.  Quense lined it off the CF wall, moving Shaw to 3b.  Shaw scored on a passed ball.  Vergona hit a LONG 2 run HR to LF.  Jones (9.95 ERA) in to pitch for Keefer.  Trivelpiece flied out and Figueroa grounded out.  Hughes flied out.  Rams up 4-1
after 2.

In the 3rd, Aughinbaugh got a K and 2 fly outs.
Van Hoven singled.  Canessa singled but was out trying to stretch it to a double.  Mayer reached on a FC, Van Hoven beating the throw home.  Shaw hit a towering 3-run HR to CF. She sure has Rutgers' number.  Quense hit a double off the wall, missing a HR by less than a foot.  New pitcher for Rutgers.  Levine, 8.64 ERA.  WP moved Quense to 3b.  Vergona walked.  Trivelpiece singled home Quense.  Figueroa grounded out but moved the runners up.  Hughes grounded out.  Runners held.  Van Hoven  singled home Vergona but was thrown out trying to make 2b on the throw home.  She looked safe.  Rams up 10-1 after 3.

In the 4th, freshman Rundlett in to pitch for Aughinbaugh.  This is her first official outing.  She's got a good rise ball.  She gave up a single off Mayer's glove at 3b,  then gave up a walk, got a pop up, a GB out, and a K.
Canessa grounded out.  Mayer walked.  Shaw flied out.  Burbridge, PR for Mayer, stole 2b and moved to 3b on a PB.  Quense K'd, but the catcher dropped it.  Quense reached 1b on a throwing error by the catcher and Burbridge scored.  Vergona walked.  Trivelpiece hit into a force.  Rams up 11-1 after 4.

In the 5th, Rundlett gave up a leadoff walk, a fly out, and infield FC, an infield single to load the bases, a walk to score a run, a single which scored 2 to eliminate the run rule.  A single scored another run.  Stocks in to pitch for Rundlett.  She got 2 pop ups to end it.
Johnston in to PH for Figueroa, got a single.  Hughes walked.  Van Hoven flied out.  Canessa lined out.  Mayer hit a 3-run HR to end it.  Her 1st HR of the season.

Rams win 14-5 via run rule.

We had 12 hits.  Van Hoven, Shaw and Quense had 2 each.  Vergona, Shaw, Mayer and Hughes had HRs.  Shaw and Mayer had 3 RBIs and Vergona had 2.
Aughinbaugh went 3 innings, giving up 1 run on 2 hits with 1 K.  Rundlett went 1.1, giving up 4 runs on 4 hits with 1 K and 3 BBs.  Stocks went 0.2.

We're 14-4 and next play the NC State-Lehigh game winner tomorrow at 12:15.  I can't cover that one in play-by-play.  NC State's Live Stats overwrite each other, so, being the last game, at least the details will still be there afterwards.

Here's the SID's recap and box scores of the two games:  http://fordhamsports.com/news/2017/3/4/softball-picks-up-two-more-wins-at-n-c-state-invitational.aspx

Thanks for the coverage 81.  Way to go ladies!  A couple of tougher opponents coming up next week.

We had 10 hits.  Mayer and Shaw each had 3 and had 4 and 6 RBIs respectively.  Shaw will be A10 Player of the Week again without a doubt.  She could get votes for national Player of the Week.

Quense gave up 2 runs in 4 innings on 3 hits, with 2 Ks and 4 BBs.  She didn't have her very best control all weekend, but gutted it out.  She's now 11-1.  Aughinbaugh went 1 inning with 2 Ks.

Here's the SID's writeup and box score:  http://fordhamsports.com/news/2017/3/5/shaw-powers-softball-to-weekend-sweep-at-n-c-state-invitational.aspx

Here's our latest stats: http://www.fordhamsports.com/custompages/stats/sball/2016-17/teamcume.htm
Hughes leads with a .467 and surprisingly leads with 6 HRs.  Our team BA is up to .296, OB% is .401, and fielding pctg is up to .975.  We're 31-35 in SBs.  Our team ERA in 2.80, led by Quense's 2.24.

We're 15-4 and play in Miami and Boca Raton next weekend, including a game against "#28" Florida Atlantic.  We should be favored in 6 of the other games, although a couple are tough opponents.  This will easily be our best record ever going into A10 play.

Yep, that's the link.  It appears that it's been updated despite the date because Florida IS #1 now, which helps our eventual RPI SOS.

Fordham got some points on the USA Today rankings (6 in total), so that's nice to see.
