We make an unusual trip, if the schedule is correct, first going to Miami for a game vs Rutgers again (#116 last year and whom we run-ruled twice last week) and Florida International (#107 last year).

We then go to Boca Raton to face Ball State (#170), Brown (#229), Illinois State (#113), Fairfield (#222) and Florida Atlantic (#28 last year and had received top 25 votes earlier this year.  The schedule says that we play the last two games on Tuesday, with Monday off.  Huh?

Let's hope we don't have a letdown and keep the killer instinct to put the lesser teams away.  We should face each team's ace pitcher, so anything can happen.

In the game vs (3-11) Rutgers, Aughinbaugh is starting in the circle, Quense is at 1b, Shaw is DP, hitting for Figueroa (LF), Trivelpiece is in RF.  Keefer, with a 9.59 ERA is pitching for Rutgers.  We faced her last week.  She has control problems.  Despite their record, Rutgers is a good hitting team (.295).

In the 1st, Aughinbaugh gave up n infield single and was called for an illegal pitch.   She then gave up a single, a double and a run.  A GB out scored another run.
In our half, Hughes singled to lead it off.  Van Hoven hit into a force and stole 2b.  Canessa flied out.  Mayer got an infield single.  Both were were stranded when Shaw popped up.  Rams down 2-0 after 1.

In the 2nd, Aughinbaugh gave up another single, but that was it.
In our half, Quense walked.  Aughinbaugh doubled.  Vergona popped up.  Trivelpiece singled, scoring 2.  She then stole 2b.  Hughes doubled home a run.  Van Hoven singled home a run.  Jones (9.10 ERA) in to pitch for Keefer.  Canessa got an infield single.  Mayer fouled out.  "Miss RBI", Shaw, hit a 3-run HR.  Opponents will start walking her.  That's 27 RBI's, 12 more than any other Ram.  Quense fouled out.  Rams up 7-2 after 2.

In the 3rd, Aughinbaugh gave up a single and a double.  A sac fly scored a run.
In the bottom of the 3rd, Aughinbaugh grounded out.  Vergona popped up.  Trivelpiece lined out.  Rams up 7-3 after 3.

In the 4th, Stocks came in to pitch for Aughinbaugh.  She gave up a walk on 4 pitches, made an error, got a foul out, a fly out, and a K.
In our half, Hughes K'd. Van Hoven grounded out.  Canessa reached on an error.  Mayer fouled out.  Jones is pitching better today for Rutgers than she did last week.  Rams up 7-3 after 4.

In the top of the 5th, Skrepenak went into RF for Trivelpiece.  Stocks got 2 fly outs, gave up a walk, and got another fly out.
In our half, Shaw flied out, Quense popped up, Stocks K'd.  Rams up 7-3 after 5.

I can't finish play-by-play in real time.  Someone else can, or I'll update it later.

In game 2 vs Fla Intl, Quense is pitching, Johnston DP (hitting for Vergona), Shaw at 1b and Skrepenak in RF.  FIU has good pitching (1.91 ERA).  Saile (with a 2.23 ERA), but most of their innings, is pitching for them in this one.  She has about a 3:1 K:BB ratio.  They have a .306 BA and are 18-6 so far this year.  This could be a tough one.

Van Hoven walked in the 1st but that was it.
Quense hit a batter and gave up 2 doubles and 2 runs.  Rams down 2-0 after 1.

In the second, Quense hit a HR.
Quense gave up a single.  FIU got a SB but no runs.  Rams down 2-1 after 2.

In the 3rd, Hughes walked and stole 2b, her 12th. Van Hoven singled but Canessa grounded into a double play with Hughes on 3b.
Quense retired the side in order.  Rams down 2-1 after 3.

All we got in the 4th was a walk.
Quense gave up another double.  A sac fly and throwing error by Hughes allowed a run to score.  Rams down 3-1 after 4.

In the 5th, Figueroa got an infield single.  Hughes walked.  Van Hoven hit into a force and Canessa lined out.
Quense gave up an infield single, hit another batter, then gave up a run on a Van Hoven error.  One runner was thrown out at home.  Rams down 4-1 after 5.

In the 6th, Shaw hit a solo HR, her 7th, which now leads the team.  Quense and Skrepenak walked with 2 out.  Summers (1.66 ERA) in to pitch for Saile for FIU, got Figueroa to ground out.
Quense gave up a leadoff single but that was it.  Rams down 4-2 after 6.

The top of our lineup went down in order and we lost 4-2
Only 2 or the 4 runs were earned.  Quense gave up 6 hits, 3 of which were doubles.  She had 2 Ks and no walks.
We only had 4 hits, including HRs by Quense and Shaw.  We had 6 BBs, 7 Ks and 7 LOB.

We're 16-5 and next face Ball State Saturday at 1:30.

Here's the SID's writeup and the box scores of the two games:  http://www.fordhamsports.com/news/2017/3/10/softball-splits-to-begin-fau-tournament-shaw-hits-two-more-home-runs.aspx?path=softball

VS (10-15) Ball State, we have the same lineup as against FIU, with Quense in the circle.  We're facing their best pitcher, Huber, who has a 2.33 ERA.  Ball State has beaten good DePaul and Florida Atlantic teams, and had close games vs. Lehigh, USF and FIU, so they are better than their record indicates.

It didn't start well, with Van Hoven (SS) making an error on the first play.  Quense then gave up a single and a double, allowing 1 run to score.  Figueroa (LF) threw a second runner out at home.
In our half, Hughes led off with a single and stole 2b, but was called out for leaving early.  Van Hoven K'd.  Canessa hit a HR, her 2nd of the year.  Mayer lined out.  The Live Stats isn't reporting properly.  1-1 after 1.

In the 2nd, Quense retired the side in order.  FAU's Live Stats are frozen.
Per Twitter, Johnston and Quense singled in the bottom of the 2nd, but were LOB. 1-1 after 2.

Both teams went down in order in the 3rd.  1-1 after 3.

Follow along working Live Stats at:  http://www.sidearmstats.com/ballstate/softball/

In the 4th, Quense gave up a double but the runner was thrown out at 3b on a GB to Hughes at 2b.
In our half, Shaw was HBP but was LOB.  1-1 after 4.

In the 5th, Quense gave up 2 walks with no outs to the bottom of the lineup.  A (safe) sac bunt moved the runners up.  Van Hoven threw a runner out at home on a GB to SS.  Quense got out of it with a fly out and a pop up.
In the bottom half, Van Hoven doubled with 2 outs but was left stranded.  1-1 after 5.

In the 6th, Quense retired the side in order.  She has more fly outs than GB outs in the game though, which is unlike her.
In our half, Mayer popped up.  Shaw tripled.  Johnston walked.  Quense grounded out and Skrepenak K'd.  2 LOB in scoring position.  May have been a good time for Trivelpiece to have pinch hit since Skrepenak is only hitting .125 (vs .333).  1-1 after 6.

In the 7th, Quense retired the side in order, getting (only) her 3rd K.
In the bottom half, Trivelpiece PH for Figueroa and walked.  Hughes tripled her home and the Rams win 2-1.

Quense didn't give up any earned runs, gave up 3 hits, had 3 Ks, 2 BBs.
We had 7 hits.  Hughes had 2.  Hughes and Shaw had triples and Van Hoven had a double.

We're 17-5 and should have an easier game vs Brown at 6 pm later today.

VS 0-8 Brown, that just got run-ruled by LIU by 8-0, I expect another run rule game.  They've only scored 11 runs in 8 games and lost 8-0 and 7-0 to Ball State and host Florida Atlantic in this tournament.  They're hitting around .220 and have about a 5.50 ERA.  They don't publish individual stats.

Stocks is in the circle for the Rams.  Shaw is DP for Figueroa (RF) and Trivelpiece is in RF.

In the first, Hughes reached on an error and stole 2b, her 13th SB in 15 attempts.  Van Hoven got an infield single.  Canessa tried a squeeze bunt but Hughes was out at home.  Mayer hit into a FC.  Van Hoven was forced at 3b.  Shaw grounded out.  Wasted 1/2 inning there.
In the bottom half, Stocks gave up a double but got out of it with 3 fly ball outs.  0-0 after 1.

In the 2nd, Trivelpiece, batting 6th, grounded out.  Quense walked, tied for most with Hughes at 18.  Vergona grounded out.  Figueroa walked.  Hughes hit a 3-run HR, her 7th of the season, tied with Shaw.  She had only 1 last year.  Van Hoven flied out.
In the bottom half, Stocks got a pop up, a K, a single, a double, a bunt single and a foul out with the bases loaded.  Rams up 3-0 after 2.

In the 3rd, Canessa walked.  Mayer flied out.  Shaw singled.  She and Hughes are hitting over .400.  Trivelpiece popped up.  Quense doubled home 2 runs.  New pitcher for Brown.  Vergona fouled out.
In the bottom of the 3rd, Stocks gave up a leadoff single, got a foul out, and 2 pop ups.  Rams up 5-0 after 3.

In the 4th, Figueroa got an infield single.  Hughes doubled her home.  Van Hoven singled Hughes home.  Van Hoven stole 2b, her 11th for 11.  Canessa doubled home a run.  New pitcher for Brown.  Johnston ph for Mayer, walked.  Shaw walked to load the bases.  A Trivelpiece GB out scored a run.  Quense walked to reload the bases.  New pitcher for Brown, their SS.  A Vergona GB out scored a run.  Shaw scored on a WP.  Figueroa walked and stole 2b.  (not sure about that with a 11-0 led)  Hughes singled home a run.  Van Hoven reached on an error as another run scored.  Canessa walked to reload the bases for the 3rd time this inning.  Johnston grounded out to finally end it.
In the bottom half, Stocks retired the side in order.  Rams up 13-0 after 4.

In the 5th, with some subs in, Skrepenak got a single but otherwise we sent down in order.
Stocks gave up 2 doubles and a run scored.  A PB and a WP scored another run.

Rams win 13-2

We had 10 hits.  Hughes had 3, including a triple and a HR, along with 5 RBIs.  Van Hoven had 2 hits.  Quense and Canessa had doubles.  We had 8 BBs and 3 SBs.
Stocks gave up 8 hits and had 2 Ks.  The # hits is a little troubling from our #3 pitcher against a poor-hitting team though.

Here's the SID's sriteup and box scores of the two games:  http://fordhamsports.com/news/2017/3/11/hughes-walks-off-powers-softball-to-doubleheader-sweep-on-saturday.aspx

We're 18-5 and play one game tomorrow vs Illinois State at 1:30, although the weather may delay the game.  They are 8-11, but have played 6 top-25 teams, having beaten #10 Minnesota.

We have Quense in the circle and Johnston as DP, hitting for Vergona, with Skrepenak in RF.
Ill St has Finck in the circle, their best, who has a 2.97 ERA.  They hit .278 as a team, with little power or speed.

In the 1st, Hughes walked but was caught stealing.  Van Hoven K'd and Canessa popped up.
Quense got a K, Van Hoven booted a GB, Quense gave up a walk, got a fly out, gave up another walk to load the bases, gave up a single to score 2 runs.  Both runs were unearned.  Rams down 2-0 after 1.

In the 2nd, Mayer singled.  Shaw singled.  Quense popped up.  Johnston reached on an error and Mayer scored.  Skrepenak and Figueroa K'd.
In the bottom half, Quense got a GB out, gave up an infield single, got a LD out, runner stole 2b (opponents are 18-21), Hughes booted a GB allowing an unearned run to score.  She gave up a triple and another run before getting a fly out.  Rams are down 4-1 after 2.  All 4 runs are unearned.

In the 3rd, Hughes walked, as did Van Hoven.  Canessa hit into a force. Mayer singled to load the bases.  Shaw singled home a run.  An error on the CF added another on the play.  A Quense GB out added a run to tie it up.  Johnston grounded out with Shaw left on 3b.
In the bottom half, Quense gave up an infield single, got a sac bunt out, got a fly out, and a LD out.  Tied at 4 after 3.

In the 4th, Skrepenak and Figueroa grounded out.  Hughes singled.  Van Hoven hit into a force.
In the bottom half, Quense gave up a 2-out double, but got out of it.  Still tied 4-4 after 4.

In the 5th, Canessa popped up.  Mayer singled.  Shaw hit a 2-run HR.  Quense and Johnston grounded out.
In the bottom half, Quense got a LD out, got a fly out, Shaw booted a GB, our 3rd error, a GB out ended it.  Rams up 6-4 after 5.

In the 6th, Trivelpiece PH for Skrepenak and popped up.  Figueroa grounded out.  Hughes flied out.
In the bottom half, Quense got a pop up, gave up a single, got a GB out, gave up a walk, then gave up a double scoring 2 runs.  Tied 6-6 after 6.

In the 7th, Van Hoven grounded out, Canesa singled, Mayer hit into a force, Shaw lined out.
In the bottom half, Quense, facing 4-5-6, gave up an infield single, then a double, got a GB out, a K and a fly out to end the threat.  6-6 after 7.

In the 8th, the international rule is in place with Shaw placed on 2b.  Quense walked.  Johnston grounded out, moving the runners up.  Skrepenak grounded into a FC with Shaw out at home.  Figueroa grounded out.  2 LOB in scoring position.
In the bottom half, with a runner on 2nd, Quense got a fly out, a GB out, thena single, allowing the winning run to score.

Rams lose 7-6.  Not a well-pitched or defensive game.  Quense gave up 10 hits, 3 earned runs with 3 BBs and only 2 Ks.  We had 3 errors, all leading to runs.
We had 8 hits, but Mayer and Shaw each had 3.  Shaw had a HR and 3 RBIs.

Here's the SID's writeup and box score:  http://www.fordhamsports.com/news/2017/3/12/softball-falls-to-illinois-state-in-extras-on-sunday.aspx?path=softball

We're 18-6 and play Fairfield next at 2:30 on Tuesday.

In the game vs Fairfield, Rookie Aughinbaugh is in the circle and is hitting for herself (at .333).  Shaw was moved up to the #2 spot in the lineup and Van Hoven down to 5th, which is a little odd given their relative power and prospective runners on base.  Shaw is playing RF, probably for the first time ever.  Johnston is DP, hitting for Figueroa.

Fairfield is 5-9, having lost 2 to LaSalle and 2 to FIU (run-ruled), but having beaten George Mason twice.  They're hitting .299, but have a 7.35 ERA.  Hughen, with a 8.68 ERA is in the circle for this one.

In the 1st, Aughinbaugh retired the side in order.
In our half, Hughes walked and stole 2b, her 14th out of 17.  Canessa singled her in.  She stole 2b and was thrown out at home on a Van Hoven single.  Rams up 1-0 after 1.

In the 2nd, Aughinbaugh gave up 2 singles and a walk to load the bases, but worked her way out of it.  Shaw made an error in RF on the 2nd single, allowing the runners to move up.
We went down in order.  Rams up 1-0 after 2.

In the 3rd, Aughinbaugh gave up a single, then a double.  A throwing error by Mayer allowed a run to score and the other to reach 3b, but that was it.  Our defense has been weak lately.
In the bottom half, Hughes singled, but that was it.  Tied 1-1 after 3.

In the 4th, Aughinbaugh retired the side in order.
In our half, we went down in order. 1-1 after 4.  We should be run-ruling this team.

I won't be able to finish play-by-play in real time, nor the start of the FAU game at 5:00 pm.

Rams win 2-1 in the bottom of the 7th.

Rams up 3-0 on (15-9) FAU in the 1st on a Hughes walk, SB, a Canessa single, and a Mayer HR.
Quense is in the circle for us.  Trivelpiece is in RF and Shaw at 1b.  Johnston is DP, hitting for Figueroa.
Wilson, with q 1.78 ERA is pitching for FAU.  They have a .278 BA and good power.

Trivelpiece and Vergona single in the 2nd but we didn't score.

Mayer singled in the 3rd but was LOB.

Vergona doubled in the 4th but was later caught in a rundown.
Through 4, Quense has given up 1 single and 2 BBs but no runs.  Rams up 3-0.

Shaw singled in the 5th, followed by a Canessa single.  Van Hoven singled to load the bases.  Mayer hit into a 6-2 force, Shaw out at home.  Quense reached on an error.  Canessa scored.  johnston singled and Van Hoven scored.  Vergona hit a sac fly and Mayer scored.  Trivelpiece singled to load the bases again.  Hughes walked, forcing in a run.  New pitcher, Buckley for FAU, with a 3.50 ERA.  Shaw lined out to end the inning.
Quense got 2 Ks and gave 2 singles in the bottom of the 5th but no runs.  Rams up 7-0.

We went down in order in the 6th.
In the bottom half, Quense only gave up an infield single.  Rams up 7-0 after 6.

In  the 7th, Vergona singled but that was it.
Quense gave up a walk but hat was it.

Rams win 7-0 and go to 20-6.  I think that's the earliest we've ever reached 20 wins.  As poorly as we played vs a weak Fairfield team earlier, we played the opposite against a very good FAU team in this one.

We had 12 hits.  Vergona had 3.  Mayer, Van Hoven and Trivelpiece each had 2.  Mayer had a HR and 2 RBIs.
Quense gave up 4 hits with 4 Ks and 3 BBs.

We next play Hofstra in a week on LI, weather permitting.
