When I first checked the scores, 4A Division and two B Division races had been completed and our Rams were in third place. Addy Ferguson '17 & Lauren Holderman '18/Gabrielle Mascio '18 were leading A Division with Lauren crewing in the first three races and Gabby subbing for her in Race 4A. Amanda Stapp '17 & Elizabeth Foulston '18 were in seventh place in B Division. Amanda was studying abroad in the fall and this is her first regatta since last spring.

When I checked back a second time, a Fordham Burgee indicated the Rams were in first place after 3B. I said to myself, "Wow! Amanda & Elizabeth must have won Race 3B, but the place had not yet been posted. I decided to wait until eight races, four in each division, had been completed before giving my first report. After four B races, I discovered that Fordham scored an OCS in Race 3B and an 11 in 4B. OCS =
"On the Course Side" at the start meaning our boat was over the starting line when the starting horn sounded and was subsequently disqualified. I can't tell from the official scoring but my guess is that Amanda and Elizabeth won the race and were then DSQ'ed. Since there are 20 boats in each race, a DSQ = 21 points. Assuming they crossed the finish line first, the DSQ added 20 points to their score, so as I write this, Fordham is in seventh place after eight races. However, with 20 teams, 40 races are scheduled, 20 in each division, over two days
so a lot of sailing remains. Our gals should definitely be in the mix as the competition progresses.

Our Rams are in fifth place against some very good competition.

Addy and Lauren/Gabrielle are in second place in A Division. With a 4-2-12-5-6-3 series, they are only one point out of first.

In B Division, Amanda & Elizabeth are also sailing well considering Amanda hasn't competed since last spring. They have their sea legs and are sailing consistently with a 14-2-OCS-11-8-10 series, which puts them in 13th place, only seven points out of tenth. The OCS was costly as without the 20-point penalty, Fordham would be in third place. However, at this stage of the season, we want our sailors to be aggressive so being over the starting line by a few inches now is better than doing so at the conference championship six weeks from now. It's a terrific opportunity for anyone, who has been away for a while, to both get rid of the rust and improve her timing at the starts. Lots of racing tomorrow. While a top five finish at this event would be terrific, be assured that our gals will be pushing to do even better.

Three more races in each division were completed this morning. Commencing with Race #7 in A Division, Annika Ekholm '20 began to crew for Addy Ferguson, and Grace Howie '20 & Lauren Holderman '18 assumed sailing responsibilities in 7B. Fordham scored 13-13-1 to maintain second place in A Division, while B Division finished 17-6-19 in their first three races.

The overall standings after 18 races, nine in each division are:

18   Virginia                            281
19   Old Dominion                   311 *
20   Maryland                         349

Next week, Fordham will be conducting its Spring Training Trip at the College of Charleston, the site of this year's ICSA National Championships, so Coach Norfleet is assuring that as many team members as possible get to race at our two regattas this weekend.

From the Official Report

"Sunday, March 12:

With the time change Saturday night, temperatures were in the 20s when the competitors on Sunday and the harbor start was postponed until 10:00 while we waited for things to warm up. A division sailed FJs and B was in Z420s in a nice 7-15 knot northwesterly breeze. We sailed 3 races per division, took a lunch break and then sailed three more, for a total of 12 races per division for the regatta. Congratulations to Stanford for winning the 2017 Navy Spring Women's Regatta."

FINAL RESULTS. (* = Varsity Team)

20          Maryland                                          460

Kudos to all our gals for a competitive showing in their first regatta of the year, and particularly to our A Division skipper Addy Ferguson '17 (All races) and crews Lauren Holderman '18 (1-3), Gabrielle Mascio '18 (4-6 & 10-12) and Annika Ekholm '20 (7-9), who sailed a very impressive 4-2-12-5-6-3-13-13-1-1-16-14 series to capture third place in their Division.

B Division proved more difficult but skippers Amanda Stapp '18 (1-6) & Grace Howie '20 (7-12) with crews Elizabeth Foulston '17 (1-6)
and Lauren Holderman (7-12) had four Top 10 finishes, and would have had five had it not been for the OCS penalty, without which we
would have finished in eleventh place. Our gals competed very hard under trying conditions for all the sailors and there is no question, that they will build on this solid effort, particularly during their Spring Training Week at Charleston starting tomorrow.

GO RAMS!
