URI is always at the bottom of the A10 and their #262 RPI this year would put them in the cellar again.

They hit .244, have little power and absolutely no speed.  Their ERA is a horrendous 8.75, with their best pitcher at a 6.08.  Their fielding is a weak .938.

We have a double header with them on Saturday starting at noon and a game Sunday at 1 pm.

I can't cover any of these games, so anyone, please feel free to post updates.

Here's the SID's pregame writeup:  http://fordhamsports.com/news/2017/3/23/softball-opens-conference-play-by-hosting-rhode-island-for-three-game-series.aspx

Here's an interview with Bridget confirming that Quense was ill and couldn't play vs Hofstra.  Also includesa a talk with Jess Hughes.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srOJGkRHLgs&feature=youtu.be

Here's the SID's writeup of the first two games, highlights, and the box score.
http://www.fordhamsports.com/news/2017/3/25/softball-scores-25-in-doubleheader-sweep-to-open-conference-play.aspx?path=softball

Quense had a 5-inning 1-hitter and Aughinbaugh, a 5-inning 5-hitter, although the writeup said Quense won "tossing five one-hit innings".  (= 5 hits by my Fordham math)  Wink

Shaw was moved to cleanup for both games.

We actually only had 6 hits in game 1, but 3 HRs and 7 BBs.  We also had 3 HRs in game 2, but 14 hits total and 6 more BBs.  We had 9 SB's in the 2 games and played errorless ball.

This will certainly pad all of our stats.

3rd game tomorrow is at 1 pm.

Coach Bob, Bridget's dad, was back involved with the team today.  Good to see!

Elsewhere, Dayton shut out GW, SLU beat SJU, GM shut out LaSalle.  SJU run ruled SLU in game 2, as did LaSalle over GM and Dayton over GW.
So we and Dayton are 2-0.

Take out the broom- Sweep- 9-0

 http://www.fordhamsports.com/news/2017/3/26/softball-completes-weekend-sweep-of-rhode-island.aspx

Highlights- Freshman Taylor Stocks' first career shutout capped off a terrific weekend in the circle for Rams pitchers, tossing five two-hit innings with no walks and a season-high five strikeouts. Stocks picked up her third win and lowered her ERA down to 2.05.

For the series, the team compiled a .426/.554/.820 slash line with 26 hits and 19 walks (to six strikeouts), six home runs and 32 runs driven in. Van Hoven led the way with a .417 average on a team-high five hits, plus three walks, scoring six times and stealing five bases in five attempts, also driving in four. Eight Rams batted .400 or better for the series. Pitching-wise, the three pitchers combined for just eight hits allowed in 15 innings, with three walks and 12 strikeouts, all complete game shutouts.

Video highlights:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KK85lXLouwg&feature=youtu.be

To re-clarify Stocks' performance, she pitched 5 innings, giving up 2 hits.  Not exactly the 5 2-hit innings as quoted from the SID's writeup.  The second time they mis-worded a pitcher's performance this weekend.

As Bridget was quoted, it was good to see all 3 pitchers throw shutouts, have a solid defense, and the entire lineup contribute.  Playing in cold weather can be very distracting, so all the more kudos to the team this weekend.
