Mayer has got to run aggressively at the runner.  Too much space btw throws. Play with confidence

In the top of the 3rd, Aughinbaugh got 2 GB outs, gave up an infield single that Johnston should have cut off and taken from 3b, gave up a single to LF, then got a force out.  Our defensive decisions are troubling.

In the bottom half, Aughinbaugh grounded out, as did Canessa.  Hughes lined out.  Rams down 1-0 after 3.

In the top of the 4th, Aughinbaugh got a fly out on a diving catch by Skrepenak in LF.  She then gave up a single, got a very close force, and a fly out.

In the bottom of the 4th, Shaw led off with a double.  Johnston grounded out but Shaw moved to 3b.   Mayer lined out to 3b.  Van Hoven grounded out.  1 LOB.  Rams down 1-0 after 4, missing a great chance to score.

In the 5th, Aughinbaugh got a K, gave up a bunt single that Johnston (3b) threw into RF, allowing the runner to get to 2b, gave up another bunt single, got a pop up, got a fly out to deep LF to end the threat.

In our half, Skrepenack K'd, Quense PH for Trivelpiece and also K'd, Aughinbaugh beat out an infield single.  Canessa doubled home Aughinbaugh to tie the game.  Great speed from Aughinbaugh got that run.   Hughes walked.  Shaw grounded out.  Carbone made a diving play at 2b on that one.  2 LOB.  Game tied at 1 after 5.

In the top of the 6th, with Shaw to RF and Quense to 1b, Aughinbaugh got a pop up, gave up a single, then got 2 fly outs.

In the bottom of the 6th, Johnston and Mayer grounded out to 2b, as Colleran keeps pitching away.  Van Hoven singled and wasn't PR for or she would have been out of the game.  Skrepenak hit into a force.  Game tied at 1 after 6.

In the top of the 7th, Aughinbaugh started with a K, gave up an infield single, got a force, gave up another infield single, then got a comebacker to get out of it.

In the bottom half, Quense blooped a single to LF.  Aughinbaugh hit into a force after missing a sac bunt, which she also did yesterday vs SLU.  Not what we wanted.  Canessa lined into a DP, 3b to 1b, Aughinbaugh caught off the bag.  Game tied at 1 after 7.  Going to extras again.

In the 8th, Aughinbaugh gave up an infield single to SS, a play Van Hoven usually made when she was able to play.  A sac bunt moved the runner up. She then get a K and a foul pop on a 3-2 count.

In our half, Hughes flied out.  Shaw singled, her 8th hit of the tournament in 13 ABs.  Johnston reached on an error, Shaw moving to 2b.  Mayer hit into a 5-3 DP.

Still tied at 1 after 8.  We've had our chances.

In the top of the 9th, Aughinbaugh got a comebacker, gave up a single up the middle that got past her, got a fly out that Skrepenak almost misplayed in LF, then got a pop up on a nice play by Mayer.

In the bottom of the 9th, Van Hoven singled, her 3rd hit of the game.  Bridget left her in to run.  Skrepenak singled.  Van Hoven still left in to run.  Quense missed a sac bunt attempt and then hit into a force at 3b.  After also missing another sac bunt attempt, Aughinbaugh doubled home the winning run!  Rams are champs!

We had 11 hits, with Van Hoven and Shaw each getting 3.

Aughinbaugh went the distance giving up 13 hits (a lot of them were infield hits) with 5 Ks and 0 BBs.

We're  45-15 and are A10 champs for the 5th time in a row.  We get the automatic bid.  The selection show starts at 10 pm on ESPN2.

Kudos to Meg Colleran and UMass, who gave us all we could handle.

Rams Madi Shaw, Lauren Quense, Jess Hughes, Madi Aughinbaugh and Sydney Canessa made the All-Championship team.

Meg Colleran from UMass won the Most Outstanding Player Award.  Well deserved.

Meg Colleran from UMass won the Most Outstanding Player Award.  Well deserved.

+1!  I kept wondering, when in the hell is this Colleran chick gonna tire out?!?  In the end she never really did.  Aughinbaugh was just a little better, especially at the plate!  Still, 4 runs in 16+ innings against Fordham's offense (and after having gone the distance yesterday) is pretty damn good.  Just glad it wasn't quite good enough to stop our Rams.

Speaking of the Rams...  This FIVE in a row thing sounds great on paper, but man, these last 2 were pretty hard on the nerves.  Not complaining just saying  Cool

Colleran was 2 innings short of going the distance twice yesterday, going 12 innings, then 16 today, throwing about a combined 400 pitches, not including warmups.  She was fantastic, and our ex pitcher and coach, Chelsea Plimpton called some great games for her.  Not sure your use of "chick" is appropriate here, but otherwise, a well deserved complement.

Congratulations to the players and the coaches

Some injuries took them off track this season but they overcome them and won another A10 championship

Let's hope they get a favorable draw for the tournament
They were still affected by the injuries through the championship.  Van Hoven could only hit, and she wasn't back yet to what she was.  She also couldn't run, while she had been 20/20 in SBs.  Figueroa was still out, a .304 hitter.  More importantly maybe, they both couldn't play defense.  This led to numerous changes to positions we didn't normally play.  As a a result, there were more errors, plays not made that would likely have been made, plus mental errors, all of which cost us the one game vs UMass and almost the second.  While we eventually overcame them, we can't afford that in the NCAAs.

Also, an old bugaboo for Bridget-coached teams, we don't sac bunt well, albeit we're better and try it more often than years ago.  Every base, every run is critical in the NCAA's, where we won't be facing A10 pitching, not to minimize how well Colleran was this weekend.

Here's a video of the championship game-winning hit vs UMass: https://twitter.com/Drew__Casey/status/864235664086372352

And a nice article about Senior Lindsey Mayer:  http://www.woonsocketcall.com/sports/when-it-comes-to-winning-softball-titles---both/article_c70c21b6-3a54-11e7-99b1-df19e4851f8f.html
