With a 6-1 record, we begin an 8 game road trip with a 3-game tournament at GCU, including Idaho and Gonzaga.

GCU, a private Chrisitan university in Phoenix, has some nice sports facilities, helped in part by Jerry Coangelo.

GCU was picked to finish 7th out of 8 teams in the WAC.  They are 4-2, including a win at Syracuse.

This volleyball broadcast was 1st class, in a fairly packed, loud gym, with a good pep band, for their home opener.  This was amazing for a volleyball game.  Fordham needs to take notes.  Also, unusually, they opened with a prayer before the national anthem.

Our star, Olivia Fairchild, is from Phoenix.

We won the first set 25-19.  Fairchild had 7 kills.

We won the 2nd set 25-15.  Fairchild now has 13 kills, but also 4 service errors and no aces.  We need to improve our middle blocking and hitting a little along with our deep middle defense.  We're hitting .278 to their .052.

In the 3rd set, we were down early by 5, but tied it at 16, before losing 25-23.  We only hit .073 that set.  Fairchild has 16 kills.  Morley has 9.  We have 7 service errors to 4 aces.

We won the 4th set 25-18, and thus the match.  We hit better that set but both teams played good defense and had long rallies.  Fairchild and Morley had double doubles with 19/13 kills and 13/18 digs.  For the match, we hit .205 to their .098.

We're 7-1, our best ever start, and next play Idaho (2-4) at 3 pm ET on Saturday.  We haven't had a winning season since 2008.  We can possibly return after this weekend with a 9-1 record.  Idaho and Gonzaga are not overwhelming.

In our worst match all year, one I thought we had a chance of winning, we lost to Idaho 25-11/16/15.  Idaho had 11 aces!  Fairchild had 13 kills, then it dropped off to 4 for Freely.  We only had a .043 hitting percentage to Idaho's .386.

We're now 7-2 and face Gonzaga tonight.

We did a little better, but lost to Gonzaga 16-25, 18-25, 25-23, 15-25.  Fairchild had 10 kills and Jones had 10.  We hit .101 to their .278.  We did better in receipt of service this time, out-acing them 8-6.  We had 30 hitting errors to their 15.  Obviously, we've got some work to do to improve our consistency.

That makes us 7-3, next facing Columbia, St. Francis and LIU on the 15th and 16th.
