On Sherrod Wright, I saw this guy play on TV against Linden, and although he scored a lot of points I was not all that impressed. Reminds me a bit of Mike Moore, though a wee bit more talented. He's a streaky shooter. Good player, but I didnt see anything about him that called out "exceptional". I'd rather we go after a quality big. Mt. Vernon does have a very talented point guard who's only a soph - a lefty who can handle and score. He's going to be a high-major recruit, probably out of our league.

This 2010 recruiting situation is turning into a circus.  We don't have a single scholarship available, yet we have offers out to about 85 kids and that list seems to be growing by the day.  Our staff is going to find a way to make Derrick Williams a Ram, but it's not like we can just pull scholarships out of thin air for the rest of these kids---some of whom we need.  I asked this question in a thread a few days ago and didn't get a response---probably because no one wants to consider the possibility, but do we know for sure that Chris Gaston is qualified?

Don't forget the redshirts in that equation either.

RECRUITING NOTES from Zagsblog....(LI Lutheran HS upset of ST. Anthony's Last Night)

***Among the coaches on hand were Keith Booth of Maryland, Jared Grasso of Fordham and a coach from Georgia Tech.

***Devon Collier’s list includes UConn, Villanova, St. John’s, Wake Forest,Virginia, West Virginia, Marquette, Rutgers, Seton Hall and Fordham.

JERSEY CITY - Achraf Yocoubou scored a game-high 23 points and Long Island Lutheran went into New Jersey and handed St. Anthony its first home loss in six years.

With a large contingent of Long Island fans in the CERC gym, LuHi downed the Friars 60-58 after junior forward Tobias Harris blocked a shot attempt by Derrick Williams in the final seconds.

“I knew he was going up strong,” Harris said. “I just had to get my hand on the ball without the ref calling a foul.”

St. Anthony (18-4), the defending New Jersey Tournament of Champions winners and mythical national champs, hadn’t lost in their home gym since January 2003, according to legendary coach Bob Hurley.

“Let’s not lie about it,” said LuHi coach Brian Carey, whose team lost by 17 points to the Friars last year on Long Island. “This is a really important game. You come to the gym over here and you win here, this is really important. I don’t care if you’re Long Island Lutheran or St. Pat’s or anybody. Anybody that comes in here and gets a win, it’s important for you.”

Yocoubou, a 6-4 sophomore wing who played last year alongside Tyreke Evans at American (Pa.) Christian, looked like the best player in the game. He hit two 3-pointers and scored four of LuHi’s final six points, including a knifing reverse layup that put his team up 58-54.

“I knew if we played hard, we were going to win,” Yocoubou said. “Everybody stepped up.”

Harris, a 6-8 junior with a slew of major D-1 offers, tallied 11 points and eight rebounds while sitting out much of the second half with four fouls. Kevin Johnson added 13 points for Lutheran.

Elijah Carter paced the Friars with 13 points, Devon Collier added 12 and Villanova-bound wing Dominic Cheek scored 11 points.

Check out Mount Vernon junior Jabarie (sp?) Hinds. He will captain the team next season and should be the star of the team.

He will go high major.  But we have a shot with Sherrod Wright.

RECRUITING NOTES

***Seton Hall coach Bobby Gonzalez and assistant Dermon Player joined Pittsburgh associate head coach Tommy Herrion to watch Jarrid Famous of Westchester Community College last night. WCC lost to TCI.

The 6-11 Famous is considering Seton Hall, Villanova, Missouri, St. John’s, Xavier, Houston and UConn.

Famous will sign in the spring and have two years of eligibility remaining.

“That’s my goal,” Famous said previously. “Wait to the spring, see how it goes.”

***Paterson Catholic sophomore point guard Myles Mack will take an unofficial visit to Fordham today. Mack’s teammate, senior wing Lance Brown, has already signed to play at Fordham next season.

Paterson Catholic meets Miami-bound guard Durand Scott and Rice in the Nike Super 6 at Fordham at 5 p.m., with the St. Patrick-Lincoln game to be televised at 7 on ESPN2.

Here’s the slate:
5 p.m. – Rice vs. Paterson Catholic (N.J.)
7 p.m. – Lincoln vs. No. 4 St. Patrick’s (N.J.)
8:30 p.m. – Thomas Jefferson vs. No. 16 Hopkins (Minn.)

I like Mack a lot, he's an excellent shooter and he handles the ball well---he's not a great passer though. The one problem we might run into is that we're recruiting him to play the point---Jio's eventual replacement I'm guessing---and he's going to be a 2 guard his junior and senior year of high school.   He might have a hard time improving the PG skills he'll need for the college level, and with his height---about 5'9---he probably won't be able to play anthing else.  Still though, he's a great player, he'd be an excellent addition and with our Jersey connections we should have a good shot to land him.  He's yet another kid with enough talent to play Big East ball.

Yo Rambacker, any idea if we've shown interest in Kadeem Jack from Rice?  He's a 6'9, junior center originally from Trinidad and Tobago who, like Joel Wright, has only been playing basketball for a few years.  It seems like things are really starting to come together for him though.  We're going to need a true center to play alongside Gaston, Wright and potentially Williams--- and from everything I've seen so far, Jacob Green is too soft to get it done.

Also, any word on how Myles Mack's visit went on Friday?  Thanks.

Myles Mack could end up a Ram.  It's very possible.  Don't now about Kadeem Jack.  But we are recruiting Dela Rosa from St. Ray's.

Rambacker, isn't who we are recruiting or might sign kind of a moot point since a new coach will have his own recruiting network and targets?

I've got to admit I think kids from St. Ray's are having second thoughts about ever coming to Fordham...Also, we typically don't get kids from Rice. The last kid we got (I believe) was Robin.

Depends entirely on who the coach is.

Actually Chris Bethel loves Fordham and if a player from St. Ray's asked him, I think he'd definitely recommend us.  He's a class act.

Rambacker, I was hoping you would say that. It leads me into another endorsement of Jared Grasso as either Head Coach or Associate Head Coach. It helps us keep Joel Wright and get Derrick Williams.

It helps us keep Joel Wright, Lance Brown, Chris Gaston, Jio Fontan, Alberto Estwick, Mike Moore and probably get Derrick Willams and Myles Mack, along with others.

So, are we effectively held hostage by our recruits? Or our recruiter? Or both?

Neither.  It is what it is.  This is what happens.  Nothing new here.

If the next coach connects with Jio and I believe he would have to try mighty to do so that alone could help us keep some of our recruits.  Let's not forget some of these guys are Jio's fiends and he played a big part in getting them to commit to Fordham

This link has certainly gone dry since that Brennan article last week.  I am scared to think about how this negative exposure has impacted possible recruits.

NOTES:

PC has now won six Passaic titles overall. The Cougars are 3-3 in finals since 2002….Kennedy leads all Passaic teams with 10 crowns. Its last came on a threepeat from 1998-2000…Edwin continues to list Seton Hall, Providence and Temple as his top three…Myles Mack’s mother listed Seton Hall, Georgetown, Virginia Tech and Fordham…Seton Hall assistant Scott Adubato was on hand. The Pirates are recruiting Edwin and Mack…Brown says he may play in the state tournament, depending on how his knee feels. “I’m going to see how it goes,” he said. I’m going hard now with therapy three times a week, so if I feel good I’m going to go for it.”

---Once again wwe are the only A-10 school involved with a BCS level recruiting target...probably b/c of Grasso

You are right about that. But I would insert "definitely" in place of "probably".

Mt. Vernon defeated the Poughkeepsie 77-47, to capture the Section One, Class AA championship at the Westchester County Center this afternoon. No box score yet but Fordham potential recruit Sherrod Wright had at least one 3 pointer.

More updates - Wright earns MVP. I think he had 13 points at half time.

Wright finished with 24 points. What a recruiting class we would have if we could sign him.

Khalil Murphy isn't coming to Fordham and Sherrod Wright will probably wait until the spring signing period in mid-April.
