Anybody know how involved we are with Jalen Jenkins?  There was a lot of mention of him a good bit ago, but it has seemingly died down.  Rivals lists Iona (offered), Massachusetts   (Offered), Providence, Quinnipiac (Offered), St. Joseph's and Temple (Offered).

They also list him as class of 2013 even though he's  a senior at Cardinal Hayes.  At 6'6", 220 (according to Rivals) on the surface he seems to be the type of player we could use.

Was not overly impressed with Rector last night. Seems very slight of build and dribbles kinda high like Samuel.  But he is allegedly being recruited by Stanford and BE so one game obviously does not tell the story.

That  Mount team looked like a football squad, everyone was thick, the guards were solid and Manhertz was a man child.  I would imagine that dude will be a big time recruit next year.

RAM71, is he a sophomore, can he shoot and is he a 6'8" guard?  Kidding on the last one.

Ace, yes and yes on the first two questions. He is a PG and reportedly a very good player. But with all the schools involved, it would appear very unlikely that we will sign him.

Buzz, for the sake of discussion to what level would you want the PG to score.  For instance, Fatty got 10 last night, is that the type of scoring or are you thinking more?  Or are you referring more to something a bit different.

I think the biggest weakness on this team (there's no end of weaknesses) is the guard play and I think first and foremost is the need for a point guar that can breakdown a defense and create. 10 points is a decent average for a pg but I think those points need to be dynamic, off penetration or off pick and rolls.

Got ya.  I agree, that's a very big need.  I really want someone that can take the ball to the hole on a consistent basis.  I think Samuell can actually do that, but he seems to have other weaknesses you don't want in a starting PG.  Good PGs are hard to come by though or at least at Fordham they seem to be.  I can't remember the last time we had a true PG that could do what you talk about.  One could argue Bevon b/c he did provide that, but he was more a SG than a PG, he did become a good college PG though.

I think that guy from NJ who transferred to USC from a couple of years ago fits the bill; did you forget about him or purposely leave him out because any mention of his name usually leads to a hijacked thread?  Evil

Completely forgot about him. One season and 5 games are easy to forget sometimes.

Its amazing that we have what 7 or 8 guards on the team now, one more coming in and we still have this as a weakness. In the mean time we are losing one of our two good big men, the other will be leaving a year from now and we have no one in sight as lock down replacements!!

Very good to learn that the injury is apparently not nearly as severe as originally feared.

And another PG  Shocked

Alex Kline ‏ @TheRecruitScoop
2012 Miller School (VA) PG Janeil Jenkins lists LIU, Hartford, Fordham, Canisius, Cal St Fullerton, Cal Poly & Alcorn St.

Not a lot of basketball powers on that list.

Why are you shocked about Fordham targeting another PG? The current roster is PG deprived, and Mendell Thomas is not a PG as I understand it.

Idk why it's so remarkable that Pecora continues to chase guards.  He's looking for that breakout, do-all guard like he had at Hofstra.  I don't think he believes that kid is currently on the team.  We'll have to land that kid soon.  My concern is the size of these guards.  I believe they're too small for A10 play, where their skill set comes in bigger packages.  Once he's on the team, we'll plug in forwards to rebound and set screens as needed.

Ah, Vin, that would be remarkable due to the fact that players have a 4 year or even 5 year scholarship shelf-life. So, as pointed out before, you might keep signing guards and literally end up with a team of 9 guards for 3 years....That is why it is remarkable, unless he boots players but didnt he tellus that he doesnt run players off?

You could literally have a team with nine(9)  guards in 2013-2014.  They will piling up on the bench like a guards boneyard while we have no forwards.

Short was not physically where he needed to be this year but he looked like he had a frame that was capable of packing on some good weight/strength. I know we play a three guard offense, but can Short be a combo type 2/3 guy?

I was also hoping that we'd have Gaston's replacement on the team coming in next year so that he'd have a year to get ready.

Well if I was asking if he could be a 2/3 guy, then I guess the other side of that would be a straight 2....

In the 3 guard system I am not sure if there really is no 3, which you alluded to in your earlier post.  I guess Short can be a 2/3 much like Estwick seemed to play more 3 than 2.  At 6'4" they are really 2's though, no matter how we try to spin it.  Not to put too much stock in height, but I think a guy like Bethel was clearly a 3, but at his height he seemed a bit limited/challenged against A10 competition.

Interchangeable, players rotate/substitute/convert game-to-game, play-to-play. Very different from NBA, obviously.

I do not think it is interchangeable, otherwise this board would not be obessing over the three guard offense. It is more than the occasional switch - I am talking more about whether or not he will have the physical capabilities to play with and against a typical 3. Can he guard him, can he take the physical abuse on offense, can he out position him for a rebound. It is not as simple as you made it seem.

Estwick had the size, but just could not do anything on defense... or offense (most times).

In Pecora's system, you don't really have 3s, but you count on your guards, including the point, to get mid-level or off-side rebounds.  I actually think Smith is a good rebounder for a guard -- he plays above his size.  Fatty's not bad either.  And I'm not sure if Short is too thin to fit the bill, but I did like his ball instincts in the few minutes I saw him.  So it would be nice to bring in a 6-3, 6-4 guard -- either a shooter or a point -- who can also get 4 rebounds per game. The problem comes on the defensive side, where 6-3 players guarding a more traditional 3 give up a lot of size and strength.

I am not sure. I would see he would need to bulk up some in order to take the physical abuse.  With Fatty and Frazier atin the game this season, Smith had to play the role of the "3" (not that there really is one in a 3 guard offense) many times.  At 6'2" 195 he held his own and I don't think it was often that I thought that is where we got hurt in a game.

Temple plays a 3 guard offense, but their starters go 6'4" 190, 6'4" 195 and 6'4" 210?
Our starters in the 3 guard offense go 5'10" 165, 6'3" 170 and 6'2" 195.  I would say that at 6'4" Short really needs to fill the role of the bigger guard and hopefully puts in the proper work in the weight room to add on some beef, yet at the same time not hindering his game.

BTW, Fatty is listed at 5'10" 165, but he sure does not look 165 to me.   He looks built very similar to Smith and I don't think those 4" can account for a 30 lb. disparity.
