I'm still wondering about Jared Fay. Is TP still planning to red-shirt him? Anyone?
I am not 100% certain but I believe he will be on the active roster and not redshirted. I think the original plan was to redshirt him so he can play with his brother for three years but that seems to have changed.

Thanks 71. We still do have one ship open this season as far as I know. Any idea as to what is done with open ships? Do the walk-ons recieve portions of them, or are they just a write off, as Kramer would say.

Maybe TP keeps the one ship in his back pocket just in case a quality transfer becomes available?

Do the walk-ons recieve portions of them, or are they just a write off, as Kramer would say. According to the team bios, senior Ryan Hage, a former walk on, was given this year's remaining scholarship. Nice gesture by the school and Pecora to reward a hard worker rather than just write off the extra ship.

Nice gesture, but if a transfer were to become available we'd have no scholarship for him.

How would a transfer work now? Would he still be able to start school the 1st semester or would he have to start the 2nd semester and still sit out a year, not being eligable to play until the 2nd semester in 2013?

I should have said mid-year transfer. I could be wrong on how it works, but I don't think you can bring one in if all scholarships are being used as ther would not be a scholarship for him.
At this point a transfer would have to be mid-year anyway because we are past the add/drop point for anyone to join first semester, so to answer your question they would start 2nd semester in the winter of 2013.

Isn't this similar to what DW did for Munson a few years back? Would rather have the scholarship available - not trying to be a hard ass, just want options open for some flexibilty.

Didn't think of that. I thought a mid-year transfer wouldn't count until the following year's allotment of scholarships. If you're right, then I agree it probably was better to save the ship for a rainy day.

I may be wrong but it appears the options are giving out a scholarship to a transfer student and have him available for the 2nd semester of 2013 or giving it to a worthy walk on now and have it available for a freshman in fall of 2012 who would be eligale right away. I guess it is difficult to determine which is the best option talent wise (especially if we don't know when a transfer may become available) but if the team likes Ryan, giving him a scholarship could be a moral boster.

I like the gesture, I really do, I just think that it ties ones hands a bit more than I like. If Pecora and company firmly believe that they would not use a 2012-2013 season's scholarship on a transfer, then they did the right thing. They might feel that irrespective of who might become available via transfer that they need someone who will be availalbe to start in 2012, if so I'll reiterate that they did the right thing. That said, I am not on top of the scholarship numbers for next season, but I thought we had two to give for next season, so tying one up now would still leave us one for next season. Add to that the fact that we have not gotten any early commitments for 2012, it might be slim pickings and we'll have one to spare next season also. Does Khalid Robinson get it then? That's just my opinion though. I am comfortable with Pecora doing what he feels best, after all, I did not apply for the job nor did the national search committee contact me.

Munson to me was a thank you to a family he liked for having his older brother play for DW at Wagner (But wasn't Fordham's debt to pay), this reminds me more of Zach Wing. I just hope we get the production of a Nick Vita, wouldn't that be a nice bonus

We have 3 to give next year. Thanks. To me that is more reason to have saved it, but I am glad for Ryan Hage and whomever had been paying his tuition, room & board and books.

I think that mid year transfers who are actually good players are few and far between so not a big deal in my book.

Agreed, but I don't think that is why you don't save it. You don't save it b/c you don't think that is the direction you want to go. I, for one, think the whole mid-year transfer thing should be abolished. It's a poor idea for everyone involved.

Wasn't Munson also a junior when he was put on scholarship, which made the impact worse? Since Hage is a senior, this only hurts for mid-year transfers. As long as the second coming of Mo Curtis doesn't become available in December, this shouldn't be a big deal.

According to the bio, he not only earned a ship, but was named team captain! Estwick on the other hand is not a captain according to his bio. Naming a walk-on as our captain speaks a lot about the leadership that we have had. Hopefully our new crop, namely fatty, will have some more fire in their bellies.

2. Our fanbase's interest in recruiting the PSAL and CHSAA may need to re-calibrate their thinking (including myself). NYC area HSs just don't appear to yield the A10 athlete, generally.
It's not just the fanbase's interest, it's our coach's specific plan. He's mentioned getting NYC players and his recruiting chops in these leagues over and over, most recently at A10 media day.

I, too, am happy for the Hage kid and his parents, but being out of the running for a mid-year transfer is a bad move. This move, combined with naming him captain, and spending a schollie on the elder Fay is too DW-like for my liking.

The way the team played the end of last year none of them deserved to be named captain and none of the new players has earned the title. So right now the issue is not who is named the captain but rather who emerges as a leader on the court regardless of titles. I see wanting to have the ability to take on a mid year transfer but unless and until there is an actual name attached to the potential player it does not matter. As for the younger Fay, I think that is far from DW like, he took him to get his brother Jake, whether that is a good move depends on whether Jake pays off. You have 13 scholarships and on any team only 9-10 get a lot of minutes. There is no indication that because we gave Jared Fay a scholarship that we could not sign another player that the staff wanted.
However, it is certainly not a good thing that we do not have any commits for the early signing period as of yet. I was not looking for all of our spots to be filled but wanted to see at least one player. I think there are still good players out there for the spring period, just wanted to have some good recruiting news to kick off the season.
Now with all of this being said, the season starts in a few weeks and we can start to focus on games and how our players have improved over the summer and how the new ones perform. Tough start going to Syracuse it will be a rude awakening for the freshmen and good reminder for the rest of the team how good you have to be to excel in Div. I basketball.

I like to see a walk on get rewarded with a last year schollie, I really do. But this is Fordham, so Murphy's Law applies X 100. If that phone rings on December 15th, just dont even answer it Pecora!

Let's be honest. Almost all of the posters (including me) would be ripping into DW big time for doing something like this.

I think in some cases the money is there , sort of a use it or lose it for the ship. That part I can understand....but good lord if in December some guy like Pinkston or the like calls and wants to transfer back home and we dont have a 'ship for the second semester........it can happen......... Id rather take a shot on a JUCO big for a year or two.....take a flyer on some 7 foot project for a year....

I agree. I recall when the Zach Wing situation came to light that some of those who have posted on Hage today were up in arms then. You make the call. Here is the Zach Wing thread on the subject. http://fordhamfans.smfforfree.com/index.php/topic,249.0.html
