PA, I think a "true" freshman is generally understood to mean a guy who is right out of hs, at least with respect to hoops versus football. Smith is a true freshman, not Fatty.

makes sense.

I think the point still stands that he still has 3+ years of experience and development to go through.  He could end up having a helluva career.

Probably not a debate worth having, but I disagree.  IMO, "true freshman" is used to differentiate between first year freshmen and second year freshmen (i.e., redshirt freshmen).  It is not used to designate whether a kid went to prep school or not.  Again, imo, Fatty, Canty Smith and Short are true freshmen, though Short won't be next season when he is a freshman again.

I wonder what Fay is.

Oh sorry, I missed him and Luka. Both are true freshmen.

Couldn't find any stats for Tre but did see that Lee's results are getting better and better with wins over some top prep programs like SOuth Kent. Also NERR has him ranked as the 9th best recruit in Maine ahead of all his teammates including one going to Bona.

Edit: He is behind the Bona recuit both in the Maine and NE rankings.

NERR also has Thomas as #13 in Massachusetts and #42 in New England.  I believe he was ranked significantly lower than this a couple of months ago if he was ranked at all.  For perspective, Canty was #34, Canty was #40, and Fatty was #59 last year.

New England.   So currently Thomas is ranked comparably to where those 3 were last year but he's made a much larger jump and I imagine he could continue to climb.  Though I'm probably biased given how impressed I was by watching him play.

It's hard to view these numbers as anything but a crude predictor of the player's future performance. There are many other variables involved.

I presume you meant to include Short, though you named Canty twice.

Completely agree especially considering they group prep school players together with high school players in their rankings.

From Zach Braziller on Twitter (3/6/12): Fordham bound Mandell Thomas is giving NDP a great effort on both ends. Making shots, pressuring ball.

And a little more on Mandell Thomas from NERR:

Along with the normal set of high major stars, future Fordham guard Mandell Thomas had a strong showing in defeat.  Thomas scored 16 points by attacking along the baseline and making jump shots when his man doubled the post.  He also crashed the offensive glass and battled a much bigger Brewster front line having to play out of position at the 4.
