Will Gaston get to 1,000 this year and finish his career as the first Ram with 2,000+?
Where will Butler end up on the all-time points scored list?  (My guess is #8)
Is there anyone else on the roster who has a shot to make this list in the next few years?

So BB passed JA, who I consider to have been a far superior player. Big deal. Show me the shots attempted vs. shots made comparison. Also, show me the times that JA took 14-18, missed a large majority of them, and shot us right out of the game. No wait -- don't bother, because it didn't happen.

It'd be a real shame if he passed Charlie Y.  There is a decent chance that will happen.  According to Digger, Charlie was the best player he ever coached.

We really can't read too much into these numbers. Players on complete teams often have to share the wealth.

"Shame" is too strong of a word...people understand who was a better player.  Different sport, but nobody thinks that Jimmy Key was a better pitcher than Sandy Koufax because he had more wins.

Gaston needs to average 18.33 the rest of the regular season to hit 1,000.

Will Gaston get to 1,000 this year and finish his career as the first Ram with 2,000+?
Where will Butler end up on the all-time points scored list?  (My guess is #8)
Is there anyone else on the roster who has a shot to make this list in the next few years?

It's interesting to speculate on how many points the dozen or so players on list
would have scored had they played four years and not three. If you do, factor in a
bit less for their freshman year. Looks like Jim Cunningham wins.

I recently was at an Arthur Ave basketball reunion dinner and Charley Yelverton (1968-71)
was in attendance. I was thrilled to shake his hand and tell him he was the best.

Butler will pass Charlie Y. in the next couple of games? Just goes to show you how misleading statistics can be.

Well, frosh didn't play back then, so Charlie Y scored those points in just 3 years. BB will play 4 years, plus a few games from his redshirt year. No comparison between the players.

Cunningham was the eighth player chosen in the third round draft pick of the Boston Celtics in 1958, but did not play in the NBA.

Shows the tremendous divide between college ball and da pros.

Sports blogs often confuse stupidity with edginess.  Just because I can call someone a name, doesn’t mean I’m insightful, or tough and edgy.  It just means I’m a jerk.  It’s a high tech place for what idiots used to do on bar stools, in school yards, and on gas station bathroom walls.

Butler's two best years were played alongside Stout and Dunston.  Defenses that collapsed on BD or focused on MS, both 1,000-pt. scorers, gave BB a lot of free looks.  The last two years have been much harder on him.  I am not defending BB, just noting a fact.

Besides Charlie Y only being allowed to play 3 years of varsity basketball back then compared to 4 years now, there was no 3-point shot back then either.  Anyone who saw Charlie Y play knows that he is the best by far in this comparison.

Besides Charlie Y only being allowed to play 3 years of varsity basketball back then compared to 4 years now, there was no 3-point shot back then either.  Anyone who saw Charlie Y play knows that he is the best by far in this comparison.

That was a wonderful team with Yelverton and Mainor leading the way.  If I recall correctly our center was 6'5" and the tallest player was 6'6".  PJ Carlesimo was on the bench.  The amazing thing IMO is that had Phelps stayed and developed the Rams into a perrenial power, it would have slowed the growth of the Big East.  They wound up 26-3 with losses to Temple by 1(I think) to Marquette with Jimmy Chones in triple OT and finally to Nova with a player (Howard Porter) who was found ineligible.  Nova wound up playing UCLA for the National title.

That unfortunately was our last great team and I believe we finished ranked 8th in the country.

Good god yet another glaring typo/mistake in our records. I was trying to look up the field goal percentages all time and it wasn't making any sense to me. That's because it doesn't make any sense. Where it is supposed to give the "field goal percentage" it gives points per game "ppg" so unless we had a few guys averaging 40, 50 and 60 points per game, this is another error, not shocked, its page 2 below:

Not a doubt about it.

Not being facetious but has Butler taken the most shots in history ?

OK, I wondered that, did the digging, and am a bit surprised to say the answer is no.

Entering this week's game against St. Louis, Butler for his career has shot 420-1193 from the floor, an average of 35.5%. From the 3-point line, he's shot 187-594, or 31.5%.

For folks who wax nostalgic that BB's best years were playing beside Dunston and Stout, you're statistically correct. His first two seasons he shot 193-520 overall (37.1%) and 105-277 (37.9%) from beyond the arc.  Since those two left, he's shot 33.7% from the field, 25.8% from 3-point land. The drop-off is likely as much the result of the graduation of Kevin Anderson, a true point guard who was less likely to dish to BB for an out-of-position shot (and who had two better options in Stout and Bryant).

Now, BB's career stats to date include 3-1/2 seasons, plus 7 games in his redshirt year, in which he hoisted up 71 shots.

But for all the torment he's put the iron through, he's not the leading shot-taker in Fordham history. I don't know who is, but by comparison, Marcus Stout took 1409 shots in 4 years, hitting 569 of those (40.3%). If he continues flinging shots at his current rate, BB might approach Stout's shooting numbers, but isn't likely to eclipse him by much. [And remember, some of our high scorers played before the 3-point shot, and might have put up a lot more attempts from the field].  If BB were to match Stout's shot total, he'd have to shoot 69% from the floor the rest of the year to match his FG%.

BB is neither a consciousless shooter, nor an unconscious one. The one thing we can say is that he's not a really good one. In fairness, we must also concede that he's played the last couple of years without a PG, often doing ball-handling duties himself

Now BB's already taken more shots in his Fordham career than the sainted Bryant Dunston, who hit 628 of 1183 shots from the floor (53.1%) over 4 very strong years. Which suggests that, with a Chris Gaston available inside, we really ought to be letting Chris take more shots.

Scary stat: Gaston has attempted between just 9 & 12 shots in 60% of the games (9/15)

He's attempted more than 14 shots just twice   Huh?

Contrary, BB has attempted 14+ on ten different occasions  Shocked

And I'm a big BB supporter.

Any other team wins the World Series, good for them. They're drinking champagne, they get a ring. But if we win, on our budget, with this team... we'll have changed the game. And that's what I want. I want it to mean something. - Moneyball
