As I've indicated in the past, the Atlantic Coast Championship is, after the ICSA National Championship Tournament, the second most competitive regatta in the country. Although Fordham came close to qualifying for this competition in 2009 and 2010, we have yet to earn a berth. This weekend, eight teams from New England (NEISA), seven from the Middle Atlantic (MAISA) and three from the South Atlantic (SAISA) conference participated in the ACC, which was held at the U.S. Naval Academy.

Fordham and five other MAISA teams sailed in the Atlantic Coast Tournament at Bowdoin along with 10 teams from NEISA. The ACT is the equivalent of a consolation regatta for the next highest finishing schools at the three respective Atlantic Coast conference championships.

Thirty-four teams participated in the two regattas including 22 varsity and 12 Club teams. With the exception of Stanford, every one of the top 20 varsity teams in the country competed in one of the two events.

The balmy weather on the East Coast this weekend brought very light breezes just over the three knots required to run a race. As a result, many postponements occurred on both days. At the ACT, only two races were sailed in each division on Saturday and only 12 were sailed altogether vis-a-vis the 32 races, which had been planned.

In A division, junior Alex Sachs teamed up with soph Emma Pfohman for the first time while junior Graham Gardner and frosh Nina Synnestvedt represented Fordham in B division. Consistency was a challenge for all the teams, however, and Fordham was no different. Our sailors placed among the top 10 in seven of the 12 races, including a 6 and two 7s in A division and a 2 & 4 in B division, but double-digit finishes in the 12 - 16 range kept us from placing in the top half of the fleet.

Overall, our Rams sailed a respectable regatta and demonstrated why Fordham is one of the top 10-12 Club teams in the country.
